EOC_Jason thank you my friend for asking the question I was afraid to ask:)

quick60 here is the paint we use for the frames. It is more satin than flat and looks factory. It is a single stage paint and will not break the bank.

We have been moving some cars around in the garage to make room for the 41 Willys. Right now the dirty work is done on the camaro so there is not so much dust around. I have been plagued with some transmission problems for almost a year with this car. Since it has been a trailer queen I really have not worried much about it. As simple as most of these Willy's are i tried to make mine complicated. Kinsler EFI with a Fast engine management and a 4L60 automatic transmission (w/ paddle shift) with a TCI controller. Basically the car is all run by computers. I am a builder but not much of a motor guy but I have worked my way through this. At the end of the day I finally got the program right in the ****** but by the time I figured it out I lost 3rd and 4th gear. I have a guy who is going to rebuilt the transmission with some heavy duty parts. The bummer is everything is painted real nice under the car and we have to remove the transmission. :( I am sure by the time I get it back we will be painting it and carefully putting it back it.

Then I won't even mention the Pin-Up thread either (only 190.03 VPP)

Man, Mark, the underside of that Willy's is as nice as the top. You surely can't go by the saying "Keep it shiny side up!"

Whos doing the trans anyone in Orlando by chance?

Nope, I have a guy right here in Sarasota. I just passed your exit on I-4 yesterday. We spent a few days at Disneyworld.

Oh you just had to mention Pappadeaux:drool: My cousin will be here this weekend from Ft. Worth so I will be talking to him about it. I really doubt it though. The lift probably wont be possible right now because I have two cars coming together..........Suburban and the Chevelle and the nickels and dimes are nickeling-and-diming me to death:eyecrazy:

Will the Willys be ready for the NSRA SE Nats?

Or, should I ask, what are you taking?

Oh **** thanks for reminding me. I seriously forgot about that show. I have been there the last 3 years in a row. The Willys will be done by then........its nice to have a deadline.

We got the transmission out today. It was pretty much a 3 man job because I dont have a transmission jack. We ended up stacking a couple tables on top of each other so we could drop the lift down and have something to lay the transmission on:lol: Kind of redneck!!! I had a 20% off coupon for Harbor Freight and I stopped in to buy a transmission jack. After I looked at it I decided it was going to be something else to store so I passed.

Ended up having to take the exhaust off because of the tight quarters and with everything painted the whole ordeal was a tedious process.

The transmission oil smelled a little funny.........I think I burned up a few of the clutches or whatever the heck is in there. The transmisson guy I use says he can beef it up a little bit. I guess I will find out tomorrow after I drop it off. He is not very busy right now so he should get right on it. I am going to make sure I get a price first!! The last time I had somebody work on a 350 turbo I could have bought a new transmission.

If you end up needing a new trans guy a very good friend of mine is one of the best on the east coast ;)

I dropped off the transmission this morning and while I waiting a buddy of mine who owns the shop took it apart in about 30 minutes. I figured at that point I was committed!! There was definitely some sludge in there and as I had suspected the 3rd gear clutches were toast. The transmission did have some good parts in it and a shift kit already and he had a few other tricks up his sleeve to beef it up a little bit. All new clutches quite a few other parts later yielded a $900 estimate. I got a call around 5pm today and spending most of the day on it completed it. I will be picking it up tomorrow. The only problem I have is the fluid left in the torque converter. The fluid is definitely contaminated and I am not sure if I can clean it out or not. Might have to install a new converter. I didn't get a chance to ask Tim about this because we had a bad cell phone connection when he brought it to my attention. Anybody have any experience with this?

Mark,
There is a tool for cleaning a torque convertor. If your buddy has a trans shop he should have one. It is like a solvent tank, but has a hose connection to the input side of the torque convertor. The machine will power flush the convertor. It cycles on and off on a programed cycle -- kind of like a wash machine. IIRC we had to drill a hole in the outside case of it to totally drain the solvent out. Then there is a special pop rivet that is not hollow, but solid that plugs the hole.
Ask him about it.

You will need to flush the trans cooler lines and the cooler as well. There are machines for that too, but it will be easier for you to bring the car to your buds place for that -- again assUming he has such a machine and he should.

Thanks Terry for the great info. I will check with him and see if he can do this for me. I am going to remove the existing transmission cooler and replace it. You really cant see the cooler in the picture of the undercarriage of the Willys.........its pretty and polished but it is only about 6 x 11 inches in size. That just seems really small for the 4l60 to me. I would think I would need a bigger cooler.

I dont know if I mentioned it earlier but I am guessing the Willys has less than 100 miles on it so I guess I burned through a transmission pretty quick:rocker: I will be more careful the next time.

Mark, Thanks for all the posts...fun to look at.

A couple of years back I used a transmission cooler flush kit which was an 18oz can of solvent with a flex tube on the top to clear out my cooler and lines, it worked well. Alternately an A/C flush kit (professional type) which you add solvent to and pressurize with compressed air that would work well too, either one is inexpensive.

Mark,
Ask your ****** guy about a Magnefine filter for the cooler lines. They work very well, especially after a rebuild. They can be used on the PS systems as well on the low pressure return line. Wix makes a inline filter as well but I don't have the part number at home.

Your transmission has its own filter, which should be enough to prevent damage. Of course, checking the condition of the built-in filter means dropping the pan. You might want to add an auxiliary filter that you can check without dropping the pan.

I changed my '72 Corvette steering to rack & pinion and the brake booster from vacuum to hydraulic. Both get power from the power steering pump, which has no filter. I added a 10-micron filter to the system that is rated for 3000 PSI @ 12 GPM. With a couple of AN fittings and braided line, it does its job without being too conspicuous. It can be removed and opened up fairly easily.

I'm not sure of the manufacturer but I got mine from Tallon Hydraulics for $50 (plus fittings)

Thanks guys!! Some great information. An inline filter sounds like a great idea. The more I think about it the more cautious I am going to be about using the old torque converter. Maybe a good flush and inline filter would be in order.

What a beautiful house and garage you have. Stunning.

Has there been a local Garage Journal crew by yet?
I'm down in Venice, and would love to check it out!

Magnefine is 35 micron with a magnet and a internal bypass which is critical. The internal ****** filters are 80-150 micron. I believe, IIRCC, they have a billet housing available as well.

The billet housing looks nice. First price I saw was scary -- A$230. Then I realized it was from an Australian site. If you ever feel like you are paying too much for speed equipment, check out what those pieces cost down under. I paid A$27,000 for a Toyota Camry in 1989 when I lived in Sydney -- and that was with a big corporate discount. ATI sells the billet housing and filter (with AN-6 fittings) for $130.

Hey guys wanted to check in. We had to run to Indiana last week to attend a funeral. We were out of Florida about 24 hours so we weren't there long. Its my home town and it was nice to be there. It was in the middle of the week so it stalled some progress. However, we are still getting things done. Pictures may be weak but weak pictures are better than no pictures:lol:

CamaroProject This baby has been coming along very nice. As you can see the dash has been painted and most of the components have been installed. Wiring done as far as the car starting etc. The door jams and inside the hood is painted and Bob has been doing some blocking for a few days. Believe it or not we are going to paint this car in the work room:rocker: This is going to happen next week and I will be sure to document it. I will take some exterior pictures of the car in the next few days just to let you see it.

10CF67EC-2C4A-483D-9D15-6E7AC8D51D5B-656-000000384A98EF65.jpg

66 Suburban The Burb is one of the reasons why we are painting the car in the garage. We know a guy with booth and he has had it over 2 weeks and it is still not done. It was completely sanded and we had it all taped off. I really dont like being at the mercy of someone else. I feel like I will have it back within a week.

41 Willys The transmission has been painted and we are going to install it sometime over the weekend. There is some brake fluid damage on the frame (5 square inches) and paint chipping off on the underbody where the old transmission cooler was located so we are going to properly paint them while the car is on the lift. We have the entire exhaust system off so we can get to it.

64 Malibu I spent this last week installing transmission cooler and running the fuel lines. The factor 5/16 fuel line was just not enough and unfortunately my 502 does not have the provisions to bolt on a fuel pump.
I had a regulator for a fuel injection system that had a return line on it and I decided to use it. This meant running two fuel lines but I didnt think it would hurt. I ran 3/8 inch aluminum fuel line with steel braided up to the motor so it would look pretty. Here is the fuel pump with the pre and post filter along with the factory fuel sender with one line.

86B86873-E73A-45D5-A04C-30C9278A625E-3012-000002DA423C27CF_zpsffb2c459.jpg

I found a real killer sending unit for my Chevelle with 1/2 inch supply and return lines built in it but for $150 I thought we would experiment. I dont know if this will work or not but we added an extra 3/8 stainless feed tube in the existing fuel sender. I am hoping this will be enough to supply the fuel pump.
12EB6AC2-3C63-4972-A6A1-D0082C636AF7-324-00000017E3ED0F49.jpg

The issue that has held me up the most on the Malibu has been the pulley system. Shiny motor needs some nice looking pulleys. These damn Chevelles have a big steering box so it gets in the way of the location where you would normally mount your power steering pump. Also, I am keeping this car and I want air conditioning at some point. I have looked at March, Billet Specialties Surpentine Systems and nothing flipped my switch until I found this....wow did I like it. A Cog drive system with a 2 inch drive belt:rocker: Unique and cool looking. It has a mid mount power steering pump and I can add on a lower mount A/C compressor later. The picture shows a A/C compressor mounted high..........I do not like accessories mount high on a motor!!!!!!! They are putting together a low mount one for me. I really love this setup.

Nice looking cog belt system. Looks like a Black Mountain. They have great prices -- about the same as a painted steel serpentine setup from GM but ten times the bling. Everyone is going to think there's a blower on your motor. I love that sound but my wife thinks there's something wrong with the car -- "What's that whine?"

I wish that would fit on the big block in my '72 Corvette but the stock double-v-belt crank pulley is already a tight fit and there's only about a half-inch between the power steering pulley and the spreader bar.

Thanks for the update, Mark. Sorry for your loss. We just lost my wife's 94 year old Aunt in Chicago area last week as well, but don't plan a memorial until November when family can make it from Perth.

That Camero is coming along great. What is the black area under the radio, ash tray?

The Chevell deserves a pully system like that. (but I can say that since it isn't my check book...)

Well, just for fun the next time she hears that sound and says "whats the whine" I dare you to say "its you honey, sorry I am so used to it I dont hear it anymore"!!!!!!.......then report back to us with the results:lol:

That is cool you know about Black Mountain. I like the guy and yes......his prices are great. I love Billet Specialties and March but damn.....alot of money for their stuff and since I am looking at aluminum pulleys for two motors I wanted more value.......I think they call this "Value Engineering". No matter how I diced it up with those guys it got expensive. I think Black Mountain for my applications is great. However, I know I have created a clearance problem for my electric fan and radiator. My philosophy is buy first if you like it, deal with the problems once you get it!

thanks Wingnut. good call on the black area, it is where the ashtray goes.

Like most of us guys on this forum we are picky. I had my expectations of where I wanted the power steering and alternator to mount and along with the other fitment obsticals this kit ended up being perfect. Unlike the high priced Billet Specialties and March, I can add the A/C bracket later. It is not possible with the big boys kit. You have to get all the options up front. I will certainly document the install of the pulleys and once I have the stuff pictured I will mention prices. As Bob said this pulleys are priced as fair as a custom machined aluminum pulley can be priced.

I am lucky to be alive as it is. Even luckier that a conscious woman has put up with me for more than 50 years. A remark like that doesn't even enter my mind, let alone pass my lips -- she knows exactly what I'm thinking after all this time. And I don't think she's afraid to go back to prison. Gotta go -- I think I hear her coming.....
