Looking at the Mastercool 71475 to form some ends on 3/8 line to accept GM quick connect fittings but can’t seem to bite the $390 bullet. Is there a cheaper alternative or anyone that rents out something like that?

Has anyone ever ordered from Toolpan? I've never heard of it.

That's where I bought my set from a few years ago. I've also bought my vacuum pump and a few other things from them. No complaints from me.

dont know about current pricing but will say Ive had my Mastercool set about 15 yrs and couldnt be happier.
I chipped a die and they sent me a new set post paid for free.
I also got an extra decal of all the parts thats normally stuck on inside of lid. I enlarged the unmounted decal and laminated it so I could read without a magnifying glass. Top notch service!

If you search ToolPan, someone registered here and posted 3 years ago with that screen name.

I have been considering one of these tools for awhile now, but have to say that I am confused by all of the different kits. Is there a complete kit that covers pretty much all automotive tubing needs for all of the different kinds of flares a guy could come across?

Is this THAT kit that I am looking for, or is there a better, more comprehensive kit out there?

I got one for brake lines too and it’s been a pleasure to use. Perfect double flares every time with almost no effort. Even when you need to use it under a vehicle.

I also used the bubble flare dies very gently to put a small barb on a line that will get a hose clamped to it.

Highly recommend it, I also ordered from Amazon.

I'm going to say no. My kit was the very complete standard brake it. So it had all the 45, bubble, double bubble, adapter line dies for fuel n evap flex, hell I know I'm forgetting a couple. What it didn't have that I needed for my projects was the 37.5 degree dies for AN / JIC tubing. So I had to buy a whole nother set for that. I don't remember what that cost but it couldn't have been that much, maybe a bit over a hundred. What does bother me is they don't offer a case for those so you're on your own keeping them organized.

I bought the 72485 kit on Ebay from Arctic Tools. I have wanted one for a long time, but never pulled the trigger. Could not be happier with it. I needed it to do push connects on 3/8 fuel line that rusted out. Couple of notes. It did not like the thick-wall 3/8 brake tubing that you can buy with double flares and a fitting on each end. It just pushed through the die. On the thinner walled factory fuel line, some 5/16 coiled I had and the 3/8 coil I bought it worked like a champ. I did not try to double flare that thick wall stuff, it may work fine. Also they do not have a "regular" fuel end to make. I was replacing part of a line on a 2007 Tahoe so I needed a push connect on 1 end at the tank and a regular barb on the other where I cut the line. I ended up making the barb a GM transmission cooling line connection which gave me something for the clamp to hold. I would love to use this to make barb type connections for some lawn stuff as well. All in all I love it and would buy it again. It is spendy but it saved me several hours not having to replace a whole fuel line.

Ive been using the bubble flare as a barb for as long as Ive had the set.
As for your problem on the double flares,Ive found that the inside and outside of the tubing needs to be beveled. I keep a long skinny unibit in my kit for that. Also oil the end before you start

What is this AN / JIC tubing? I haven't encountered it before but see it discussed here. It's for fancy show cars or something?

The problem with cheaper tools like this are the dies. Either you are missing the one you really need or the dies are not properly machined making a poor quality flare. And the cheaper dies do not seem to last and you can not buy a single replacement.

I bought one just to do the GM fuel injection flares when doing an LS swap on a 1972 GMC Jimmy. Worked perfectly and I also bought the JIC 37degree dies as I was using some AN and some JIC fittings. Been sitting on my shelf for about 10 years?

I didn't try a double flare with thick wall 3/8, I tried a quick connect.

I made a double flare with thin-wall 3/8 last night and it was very nice.

I'll try the bubble flare, but I kind of liked having a bit of straight before the kickup that I got with the GM transmission style.

Either way it's a great tool.

Showed up today in a box with mastercool tape. Everything looks good, I need to order some line now and get to town.

Let's see the jimmy!
