Mat for Epoxy Floor

Hello! This is my first time posting, although I have followed this site for a little while now. I did a number of searches for this topic here and elsewhere, but couldn't find answers, so I decided to post a question:

We recently had a epoxy floor professionally installed in our garage. It's not something I would have normally done, but we have a storage room below our garage and were getting a bit of leaking from melting snow in the winter. Anyway, the surface is non-slip with a clear coat, but it still seems a bit slippery when wet and we would like to put down a couple simple floor mats near the doors (one to the house and one to the deck). I understand that regular rubber mats may stain and plastic/vinyl mats may adhere. Cloth or rope mats would seem reasonable, but I'm afraid they may slip around.

Could anyone suggest a good mat to use? Or maybe rubber mats are okay if moved/cleaned occasionally?

The installer suggested a breathable-type mat, but I haven't found anything like that at Lowes or Home Depot. I'm not a stickler that needs to keep it pristine, but obviously I don't want to harm the floor if I can avoid it.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I second the BLT choice. I had a BLT mat on some epoxy flooring and it did not stain or otherwise affect the epoxy after sitting on it for a couple of years.

As Justin knows ;), I am not a fan of the ribbed version. I had it in a trailer and I found it too hard to clean. Pretty much any other pattern would be OK, though, I think.

BLT stands for Better Life Technology. You can google it or purchase it through Justin's website.

Thanks for getting back to me! I took a look at the BLT Mats. I had actually investigated these before as an alternative to epoxy flooring.

What I'm actually looking for is a simple 2 x 3 entrance mat so we can wipe our feet before we walk in the house. On the old concrete floor, I used to use simple grey fabric ribbed mats with a rubber back that I got at Home Depot. But obviously I want to be careful on the epoxy floor.

I've checked out various flooring sites and see many that look like they would do the trick (like the "Waterhog"), but I just don't know about the backing.

It seems like it would a common thing to have a small entry/welcome mat leading in from the garage to the house .... or no?

I have one of those rubber backed, carpeted mats on my floor. No stains whatsoever, nor did I even consider that a mat might stain the floor. Mine came from Costco.

I also have several Craftsman all-rubber work mats on the floor without any problems.

I've always used nitrile rubber mats on my epoxy floors with great results. You can find them at a variety of outlets such as American Floor Mats. I've been happy with the mats from them and never had a problem with stains or rubber transfer onto the finish of the floor. Most janitorial supply stores carry nitrile rubber mats as well.

Good luck!

Hey guys,

I know this is an old thread, but I'm looking for information on this very topic: Most sources say that the BLT / G Floor mats will not stick to a good 2-part epoxy, however, my epoxy floor has a urethane clear coat- any chance it would stick to this? The mats are made from polyvinyl, so I'm wondering if there is any way the polyurethane would bond or stick to the polyvinyl mat, especially with a car or maybe even something heavy like a tractor parked on top? Any information you all could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Under typical circumstances, the BLT garage floor mats will not stick to urethane or epoxy. That said, I have seen it happen. Typically with cheap coatings or a coating that was not properly applied or cured. I have been doing this since 2001. It's the exception not the rule, but in hot sticky humid climates, I have seen odd things happen.

They have also launched their clear garage mats (again) . I do want to point out that BLT mas are great for protecting the floor, but colors other than black and clear can stain from tires.

Thanks, Justin. I used the Armorpoxy Ultra system- so not a cheap floor. It is fully cured, so I am now looking for something to park on or put under tires to protect the floor. I have a '72 Camaro that leaks a little, and my Dad has a new tractor he wants to keep inside. Would you recommend the BLT mats for this purpose? Or are they more for a foot-trafficked area? Again, my biggest concern is having something stick to the floor coating and then pull it up when I go to move it. Maybe a solid rubber mat would be better than the vinyl/pvc mats?

I would use them with the understanding that they are protection for the epoxy. The black holds up best to tire stains.
