i'm better at the model number/mfr date thing. there's a couple guy's that buy and sell boxes that would know prices better.

I don't know much about Matco boxes. I'd say a grand is in the ballpark, but maybe a little high for that one.

That's pretty much exactly the right price in my area. I see that exact model for as high as $2500 and the lowest I've seen is $1200. With the bumps and bruises on that one, $1000 seems right. You can always offer less, though- just not so much less that you piss him off.
BTW: That series of Matco boxes is very well made. I have a top and bottom and love them.

So, barring miracles, $1000 is a decent price. That box is the predecessor of the current 4S series I believe. I paid $1200 for that exact same box in blue a few months ago. The main thing affecting value on the one you pictured is condition, like that big dent on the top rail.
The Proformance boxes were decent for what they sell for on the aftermarket. They're no Snap On KRL but they do the job.

About $1500
The only divider in the top drawer is one about 6-8 inches from the front, spanning the whole length of the drawer. Here is a pics of my top drawer. The front holds my extensions...24"+, and my 1/4" sockets. The back holds the 3/8" sockets and drive tools.

I believe the Snaps have better quality drawer slides, and of course better casters. I haven't mic'd the sheet metal but the Snap feels like heavier gage.

i don't know about the slides, at one time they all used the same ones. i do like the slides on my 6s better than snap ons. i think the guage of sheet metal is pretty much standard across the board.

Looks a bit old for $1000... Just paid $1500 for a 2005 Matco 7525 w/ a cover for my father's Christmas present.

Not sure what your point is about age. Mine's a 2006. The one the OP is inquiring about could be newer than your 7525 too.

The box looks a little rough (I see some damage, may be just the picture), I have seen them for $700 to $900, occasionally you can find one cheaper, if it's real nice that's not a bad price.

Like others have stated, trim and castors but, it's really not a fair comparison between a KRL and a 4S. 6S? Yes, that would be a little more fair.
I'll take it a little farther. The finish of my 4S is OK. Better than a Waterloo or Craftsman. As good as Snap-on? I don't think so but I'm sure some would argue. More power to you.
Less drawers (oops! I forgot it's spelled "draws" on the internet
). My KRL has 13 drawers for about the same footprint as the 4S. After having a 4S for a while, I'm not real high on it. I prefer the Snap-on drawer layout and construction. The Matco has hemmed drawer edges, but not like a Snappy. They protrude into the tool storage area of the drawer and take up space. Is it stronger? I dunno. All I know is the Snappy drawers have hemmed edges that don't kill space.The drawer slides are of a lower capacity on a 4 series, but still very nice.
The adjustable detent feature works well.....but I hate detents. I'm a lock-n-roll guy.
The wide top drawer has a stiffener in it that really screws up my toolbox chi.
The 4S is overall a good, solid box. They don't offer a lot of options or accessories for them like the 6s, but they're about half the price of a 6S too.

I have that tool box in that same color; bought it from a friend back in summer of 2009 for $1200 on payments. I think I paid what the original owner OWED on it.
I'm happy being the second owner of this box. Works good, slides are very smooth and the detents are positive.
I would buy it again but I have a thing for white tool boxes, not red ones.)

Well, everyone has an opinion. Here's mine.
I have a Pro-Formance series top and bottom, about ten years old. I have owned current Snap-On KRA boxes and the Matco blows them out of the water for:
Slider quality/sturdiness
Metal thickness (nearly twice as thick)
The casters are probably comparable.
I have friends with older (10-15 years) KRL boxes, and with the exception of the casters (the SO KRA casters on the three boxes I am thinking of have the springs/brakes), my box is absolutely on par with them- no question.
Although the current 4 series Matco boxes may be what replaced the Pro-Formance series, like so much else that has changed over the last 5-10 years, the quality is not the same. I've looked at a few and the sliders are not as sturdy and the metal is not as thick.
I've checked out two current 6-series and, aside from lacking flashy trim, my Pro-Formance box is on par with them in terms of quality.
There's my 2 cents.

Adding another data point to Treorp's pic; I use the divider in the top drawer to separate my ratchets/extensions from my sockets. It's tight but it all fits - for now.

This box needs to be compared to a KRA. If you want to compare against a KRL then look into the 6S.
