Hey everyone I’m Matt,

So a little back story on myself. I used to have a quarter of my dads old pole barn I made into a shop to restore my 1979 Camaro Z28 in. I kept the car in there for years. Life happened and I never finished it. In 2018 my fiancé and I bought our house together. We got married later that year on November 3rd. This garage is a huge upgrade from my old one. I’ve been getting restarted on the car build and slowly upgrading the garage. It’s gonna take a while but I have nothing but time to get it done.

My shop in my dads building: 22x12 with 7’ ceiling.

Built in 1997, it’s 50x35 with 9’4” ceilings attached to the house. Has 3 standard size doors and one that’s a 10x8. Can drive all the way through on the far left bay. Has a floor drain in the middle of the garage. The middle bay concrete has a slight slop to the drain. Has a gas furnace, 2 water connections inside and a full bathroom. It has some attic storage above the garage which is nice as I tear into the car again. In the back right corner is a bathroom. Toilet, sink and shower. Then we built another small room beside the bathroom since the washer and dryer are in the garage. Wife wanted a laundry room and I didn’t want to look at the washer / dryer lol.

When we looked at the house:

It was built in front of the original garage. So behind the main garage is a 18x20 block garage with concrete floor, 7 ft ceiling and one window lol that’s where the lawn care tools and storage go.

I’m currently restoring my Camaro so I can’t do much with painting walls and floors right now but once it’s finished I’d like to start working on the shop. I took my Rapidair air line kit from my old garage and installed into this one.

Plans are upgrade the lighting and lay it out better. I have already converted the fluorescent lights to led retrofits. Maybe, Sheetrock the walls and do some sort of 2 tone possibly with the paint. Do something with the floors because they could use some love. Maybe eventually get jack lifts for the garage doors and raise the tracks to the ceiling. Get rid of some of the conduit and clean that up some.

These arnt the best pictures but it gives you an idea what I’m working with. I was doing alittle cleaning up tonight and decided to take some pics for a first post. It’s not fancy but it’s my starting point. Looking forward to seeing other peoples shop set ups to steal ideals from lol
I already borrowed a members garage door animal gate idea which works great.

Also recently installed a used 22000 btu ac unit. For the price it does good. I might upgrade to a larger one later but right now it gets the job done. Also been working on a fuel barrel sink for the bathroom. The current layout is kinda tight in the bathroom but at least there is one.

This is just the start but I look forward to watching other builds and get ideas for mine.

I do have a small YouTube channel for my cars and garage build so if you would like to check it out feel free to stop by. Thanks all -Matt

Love the barrel sink. I wish I had water in my shop. A sink like that would be a great addition. I have an old Rusty Jones rustproofing barrel (somewhat rusty lol) I could possibly use.

That is a fantastic space to “start” with. …I love the plate collection, and see some plates from the EU (Germany, I believe) — any story about the plate collection?
Thanks a lot! I’ve always been a car guy and anything auto / transportation related grabs my attention. I got a personalized license plate for my car back when I was driving it often. (Before being torn down for body and paint) Started to pick up a plate here and there at flea markets and swap meets just for alittle garage art. Friends and family started to occasionally get me plates for my birthday or Christmas. Now each year I go to a car show / swap meet in August and I usually bring home a few plates almost like a tradition lol.

There are some license plate collected pages on Fb I’m on. I seen a Christmas license plate swap on the page and the rules were you tell them how many plates you will send and they will have the same amount of other people send to you. On Christmas you post what you got and from who. So I collected some cool plates and I mailed out packages to 5 people. Some in the states and some over seas. I ended up getting the 3 (I believe German) plates and the Australian Outback plates from the Christmas swap.

I have found some other cool ones locally. About an hour away I found a set of KISS license plates. KISS I, KISS II, and KISS III. All the same year plate so I’m assuming someone had matching tags on all of their cars.

One that is a unique plate I found at a flea market is the White and black ND 2108. It was for US soldiers who were stationed in Germany. So I thought that was a pretty cool thing to find in western Ky.

The goal was all 50 states starting out. It has grown to having multiples of several states. I don’t care if they have some rust or issues. That what’s makes them cool. Older the better for sure. There are several states that I need to get other of since I only have one from that state. Now the goal is to fill that entire wall up with different plates. I want to move the dryer vent from going up the wall to exiting out the wall which will free up alittle more space on the wall. It’s taken several years to slowly get to where I am but the thrill of the hunt keeps it going lol.

These are older pics:

Thanks man. It is helpful to have water in the shop for sure. I got deep sink which is really nice but they crammed everything awkwardly in there and I think the layout needs to be modified some. I seen a barrel sink online and it just seemed like a good way to save some space and really tie the garage theme together.

Hey the patina would look awesome on a cool shop sink! I got an old quakerstate barrel that I use for a trash can.

Thanks I appreciate it. It’s slowly getting there. Went to a big flea market and swap meet and picked up some stuff for the garage. Some new plates for the bathroom wall.

A smaller oil barrel for a second trash can.

Found an old school embossed speed limit sign that I just couldn’t pass up.

After the swap meet on the way home I picked up a replacement ceiling fan that I’ve been wanting to get rid of the small one I had.

It’s a Kensgrove 72” fan from home depot.

Thanks for checking in. Glad to hear someone else has this fan and loves it as well. Huge upgrade from what I had. I can’t wait to see which direction the garage ends up going.

I have all fifty states with a few other countries, Aruba, Mexico, and Germany. Right now I'm collecting 1971 Texas plates and all the years from 1952-1974.
Very cool! I have Germany, Bohamas, France and Australia. I’ll try to keep an eye out for Texas plates. Don’t find too many from around here.

Well, I went to the storage and looked through my plates and didn't find anything on your list. Mostly Colorado and Texas left. Some of the other states are very old and crusty.
If you have any older stuff I’d still be interested. Ky and Indiana I have the most of. But crusty ones are cool as well. Got several with rust holes in them but they look really cool still.

Always wanted an old exit sign. Found this one and couldn’t pass it up. Did some digging and from what I understand it’s from the 50s. I need to make a frosted lower lens for it but I think it’s pretty cool.

What’s up everyone, been almost a year to the day since my last update. Nothing too crazy has changed.

Been collecting some stuff for the garage. Finished our privacy fence of the house so that’s nice to have done and out of the way. Picked up a 1992 Camaro RS project car that my wife claimed. Getting closer to getting my Camaro finished.

Decided that at some point in the future I’d like to get concrete poured under the lean to on the back of the garage and box it in for an add on to the garage. Would add about 44x12 addition. Make a 20ish X 12 tool / work room with a work bench island. Then the rest as a hangout area for the family.

I'm still in sheet metal stage, there's some pics in my garage thread.

Not unlike you got it and sat on it for many years, and just in the last year really started to put in the time. Working on the floor pans and interior currently.
