Added some power to the bench, not sure if this will be the final mounting location

Then proceeded to cut myself on some hardwood and called it quits for the weekend :)

Few project updates and some heath and safety warnings in this update

Workbench now has half a bottom shelf for some extra storage

Time to get cracking on the Media cabinet
33104106382_7a6d657d08_b.jpg

2 glue up's done so far
32445383063_aacc0a9f02_b.jpg

While the media cabinet boards were drying...I decided to attempt making a chopping board

Cut up some red gum bits
33104103502_b8547be684_b.jpg

Glued up
32416510854_0f2d7a67ed_b.jpg

Cut and glued again
32876881950_c4514bae5e_b.jpg

After this I had hand planed some areas but the board was still very uneven.
I decided at this point i'd put it through my thicknesser.
I understood this would be difficult to thickness due to it being hardwood and endgrain. But i thought with a light cut and the blades were brand new...it'd be ok....

As the board was halfway through my lunchbox thicknesser a loud bang was followed by the board being ejected with serious force!!!!!!!!! it hit my hand on the way out before flying 2m over the end of the workbench and into some plywood.

My hand was definately sore but I was definately very lucky

This is how deep the blade gouged the board
33131494231_8f25eb50e1_b.jpg

the 12mm ply that it hit had a good 5mm deep dent in it!

This is probably the most dangerous and worst accident I've had working with tools. Don't do stupid things like i did.

(Thicknesser rebuild probably coming in a few weeks, probably needs new bearings, blades, adjustment and belts now)

Time setting up the thicknesser could have easily been spent setting up a router jig like so...
32445381903_cca618b93a_b.jpg

Few passes with the router, sanding and filling..

32876983330_07e8c9783d_b.jpg

32445475373_03d289d37a_b.jpg

Started applying some oil and it's looking alright so far. Needs another sand but almost there.
33218432706_bc813cae34_b.jpg

Now that I have the table saw it's time to sort out the bedside table I was previously building..

Everybody loves a good clamp picture, the more clamps shown = more points
32445382493_a42f3f1f15_b.jpg

Edges seem tight ;) just a little black colour bleeding from the clamps.
32445377443_0cfe338c6d_b.jpg

Sanded all sides
33218523496_334342293f_b.jpg

First coat of the current favourite, Cabots Danish
32876982190_6e98db016d_b.jpg

Crazy these were once dirty framing timbers many would throw out.

Chopping board and table look great mate. Good work.

Thicknesser incident sounds nuts! Glad you weren't injured too badly. I like the router guide setup though, very nice.

Thanks guys, unfortunately the chopping board has suffered some terminal cracks from either sanding or it's flight from the thicknesser.
We will rebuild, we have the technology........I mean tools.

Bedside table drawer is currently under construction and almost ready for finishing touches

Quick progress update

Not sure what i'm going to do with the cracked board at this stage
33031369190_69eed46aca_b.jpg

Cut grooves for the bedside table drawer
33031370200_05cd6882d6_b.jpg

32600134913_2eee323106_b.jpg

Drawer installed on a push to open slide. Having trouble getting it to work 100%, it works but it seems to have 2 different closed positions.
33285992731_efc8ca51cd_b.jpg

I thought i'd experiment with some west systems clear epoxy hardener
33258542532_6967a7a8e7_b.jpg

Turned out ok but the hardener made the resin dry so fast i couldn't get the bubbles out.
33258537502_7936c7728a_b.jpg

Spent 30mins sharpening chisels and plane's at the start of the weekend, definitely rewarding!
33258543602_bdacdf1872_b.jpg

Started welding the legs/frame for the Media cabinet, it's going to be very similar to the coffee table
Also purchased some new tig gloves which are lovely :)
33258536172_32c2ac0936_b.jpg

Flapped, primed and filed
33414100775_0ddd200c30_b.jpg

Also scored some more redgum fence posts this weekend...what should i do with them? :D

Nice work as always!

You can always use the cracked board as a trivet for hot pots and things?

Thanks Hewey, the Mrs has suggested that too but the perfectionist inside me can't deal with leaving it cracked.
Friend showed me an article recently which mentioned using a shop vac to **** glue down into the crack before clamping. Very tempted to give it a shot.

Mitre cuts

And together

Starting to come up pretty well :)
32811911804_9abd2b9521_b.jpg

This weekend I looked at a CNC knee mill I was considering adding to the garage.
In the end i didn't end up bidding for it, i decided even with reducing the size of the controller cabinet the machine was just a little too big for me.
The Mrs was relieved

Cabinet work looks great. Saved a good chunk of change making them yourself.

That mill looks massive, took me a minute to see the rest of it behind the shrouds. I'm sure there is something that will turn up for you.

Cheers GB.

Projects update!

I've only been back from holiday 3 weeks but i've been crazy busy lately.

Drawers are complete for the entertainment unit!
33984848973_999cf15061_b.jpg

Started the frame for the entertainment unit.
34753858326_3f43df4028_b.jpg

Excited to see this starting to come together
33984846983_8876a4418c_b.jpg

You may remember quite a while ago I started building a recessed shelf nook.
The hardwood shelves are leftover from the coffee table, 170x25 recycled messmate.
The back wall of the shelf is just 15mm ply so traditional floating shelf mounting wasn't going to do.
I came up with the idea to recess some 20x3 angle into the sides and slide the shelves into the nook.
33951207984_cd55663a96_b.jpg

Took a few hours work to put everything together but i'm proud of the results.
34794092095_5debdcdeea_b.jpg

There's been no progress on the Project car engine for quite some time, but i finally splashed out and purchased a proper bore gauge.

What ...No selfies????

Hahahahaa Terrick, there was that many people walking around viewing the world through their phone on a stick I couldn't bring out the inner narcissistic to take selfies everywhere :p

On multiple occasions I was asked to take a photo for a tourist with their back to the camera?!? :S

I'd highly suggest visiting many of the locations above, probably the most interesting to us GJ'ers would definitely be the USS Midway, it was an excellent audio tour. I somehow missed the machine shop so if anyone visits, send me a pic :D

OM, if you are in LA, then drop into Petersons Auto museum.

Before you go to The Grand Canyon, stop in at the caves on old Route 66, its not a bad trip.

Ahhh ****** I had The Peterson on my original list but totally forgot about it, maybe next time!
We did take Route 66 for a bit but wasn't too exciting, rather average surface :(

I'm happy to announce, the entertainment unit is finally done!

I've been sanding/tweaking the past 3 weekends to get it sorted.

Drawers getting ready for attachment

Chamfer drawer pulls

Second final sanding and cutting the top to size
34568255463_7c6c2b630b_b.jpg

Added some threaded inserts to secure the top.
Note: These are typical Bunnings poor quality, poor tolerances make them a pain to install. You need a 6.2mm allen key!

Finally together!
