Mayhew 5-Piece Punch & Chisel Set Question

Is this set adequate for performing suspension work on the car?

Also, the price point being so low, how is the quality of this set stacked up against higher-count sets?

Mayhew makes them for all truck brands as long as it's us made I would hesitate aswell

Mayhew is excellent quality but my hunch is that set is pretty wimpy in size. (More for homeowner, DIY projects then automotive suspension work.)

The punches needed to work on most suspensions are pretty big. That pin punch looks like 1/8".

It looks like HD's description is non existent.

the low priced mayhew stuff is not the same as the truck brands...

I'd look at this Proto set as well if you want something at a middle rage of USA price/quality

That is a great starter set. Use it till you can figure out what you will actually need to do whatever you are doing.

What suspension work are you talking about. A larger pin punch set and alignment punches are probably all you'll need.

Do yourself a favor and go check out Mayhew's website. I LOVE Mayhews striking tools. They have two different lines, the "select" and "pro" lines. The pro one is similar to what you will buy off the tool truck, but at a much better price, and has a lifetime warranty. The select line is still US made, but not as good quality, with softer steel, and has a limited warranty.

I own a bunch from both lineups, and the Mayhew pro line is the way to go. Go check out the website, find a set you like, then Google the part number and buy it!

For example, i just received this Mayhew pro alignment punch set from Amazon yesterday. Under $30, compared the the same set Matco sells for over $150.



This would actually be a great set for suspension work, longer sizes then what come in their multi sets.

At that price range they are going to be soft ****. The good Mayhew punches are like 150-175 a set

Actually there are 3 lines, Select, Pro and 150. The 150 line is listed separately under the Pro line. Those are the ones that are the same as Snap-on. S-2 steel, good stuff. The regular Pro line is still very good, would suit most of the folks here well. The Select line is totally unremarkable, some of the Taiwanese stuff is as good or better.

For suspension work, I was thinking of using a punch alignment set particularly for removal of long bolts (stuck) near and around the upper, lower control arms, and separation from ball socket.

Thanks for the feedback, which one is a great starter set for Punch & Chisel Set? Mayhew or Proto? I'd go with something of a lower count just as you mentioned, so that I can figure out what I actually need for the chisel stuff.

I purchased smaller $10 set from Sears Craftsman Made in USA; that set looks more applicable to working with leather material.

Dasco Pro is good for the Chisel Set Option, lots of reports of chipping on the Select line of Mayhew Sets

I have their Dominator pry bar set and they're awesome. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more of their stuff. Solidly built at 1/3 the cost of Snap On.
