I wanted a mechanical tach for my Cummins 4bta. The engine is going into a 1952 International L110 along with 4X4. I know mechanical tachometers can be anything but accurate as the needle bounces through 500 plus rpms.
It was the challenge to use what I had and buy as few parts as possible. I did buy a new valve cover with the oil-fill port.
My plan was to cut and machine the OEM front cover oil-filler point and use it as a reference to the center of the drive for the fuel pump.
I had/have a bunch of old Stewart Warner drive parts. I needed to make a drive coupler from the fuel pump gear to the SW drive. The angle drive was pressed into service to change the direction of the drive cable and aim it toward the firewall and ultimately the back of the tachometer in the dashboard.

I was/am not looking for accuracy. If the tachometer sinks to zero 10 seconds after the motor stops turning, close enough. The tach is just for looks, and there is that hole (left) in the dash that needs filling.

I am looking for a 0-4000 mechanical tachometer. I would like to have one of those tachometers with the multicolored face with performance suggestions.

Nice job machining parts, is the right-angle drive a 1:1 so the cable speed is the same as the shaft speed?

I picked up a Faria Beede marine diesel tach for my tractor which is gasoline, but appropriately ranged for the engine and fits the dash perfectly. It can potentially also get a proportional tach signal from the right alternator.

Cummins also had a flat cap that screwed in where you oil fill did in front of the fuel pump gear. They also had a factory tach option. The B series engines are everywhere. Bread trucks, Komatsu bull dozers, Case loader/backhoes, Skytrak fork lifts, the list goes on and on. If I was still at Cummins, I could look up the part numbers to make a search easier but you got it figured out. Nice work!

I found an overpriced tachometer on eBay. I contacted the seller and got some good information. The seller suggested he ships to Canada.
So, I try to buy the tachometer and I am told the seller does not ship to my address in Canada. Now, I am trying to find another way.
My mail and parcel address in Point Roberts, WA. is mostly shut down because of covid19, indefinitely.

Meanwhile, I have asked a few IHC contact for help.

This guy is from Cincinnati and sells used 4BT. My guess is, if anyone knows about a tach, it would be him. If you need someone to ship something over the border, I’d be happy to help.

The guy goes there, finds he was lied to, looks at a motor that the turbo was full of water and didn't notice the oil pan was smashed and the drain plug missing.......................never heard or asked to hear it run? Then buys it anyway........

That was a losing deal from the time he pulled into the lot and found out there were actually only 2 "running" engines in the guys yard.

I got the tachometer I wanted. I ended up paying more for it than I wanted, but, I do not have buyer's remorse.
I need to take the tachometer apart for a total service. I am going to mount the tachometer in one of my lathes and try to roll back the OEM bezel. While I have the instrument apart one of the local print shops has offered to make copies of the gauge face. The first copy bears the most cost. I will get a bunch printed. I want to convert a few other tachometers I own. A few friends have asked that I remember them.
