Just came back from Menard's. I looked at 3 Irvin end caps, I did not see any cobalt drill bits. Can anybody point out the cobalt drill bits that supposed to be on clearance/reduced price?

In every Menards I've ever been to there's is a disclaimer on the sale and price with rebate signs stating the dates of the sale and that price is not valid after a certain date

Plenty of state laws tell them to go stuff it up their tailpipe. If they're displaying a price, it's what they're supposed to charge. "WE forgot to remove the shelf tags" isn't an excuse, nor is 'We put them up too early'.

My experience has been that even though the sale flyer says the sale starts on Sunday, I've always gotten the sale prices on Saturday. The only exception to that is the 11% sale, you don't get the 11% rebate on the Saturday before it starts. (Though you could stop back at the service desk and ask for an 11% adjust slip).

You're misinterpreting the state laws.

Well each state is different, so there is the possibility he isn't misinterpreting. I can't find any MI state law specifically talking about this topic. The only thing I found related is when you charged more than the advertised price sign, in regards the to MI scan law. After working retail 9in MI & other states) we ALWAYS honored an expired tag. When tags weren't pulled, the employees that were supposed to pull them had a talking to, as it turned into a loss for the store. Being on the consumer end as well, I've never had a store not honor the pricing mistake.

Maybe there is a law regarding dates, but no one has posted it, so I would wait before making a 100% certainty call.

Irwin 5-pack of Countersink (or Packersinks if you are Menards) for $15 before 11% rebate. Been looking for a while, and they are $33 on Amazon. I also found a 1-1/16" ship auger for ~$7, a 1-1/4" speedbor 17" length for ~$7. Been looking for a long bit to drill deeper into tree stumps to fill with stump killer.

Lots of other Irwin stuff clearanced out. Funny how they only have SAE kits of sockets & bolt extractor kits.

I like the 11 percent.. but I'm in a different situation.. remodeling the kitchen then back to remodeling the basement.. take my 11 percent and get free drywall. Last year I did 1/4th of the basement.. bought all the drywall with rebates, and there was a rebate on the drywall.. God paid for my drywall.. works pretty good. But yes it's rolled on quote a bit

Yeah, it has it's benefits when you're in the middle of a project. But I am not currently doing any building projects, it's mostly all mechanical at the moment. I have been trying to get an normally stocked toilet for two weeks, but despite them telling me it "should be back in a couple days" twice, it never is.

Well. I did get those cobalt irwin drill bits, that on clearance, I bought two sets. The little ones are dull. Tried to use them for pilot holes in stainless. Dull! Used the bits that shop supplies for pilots. Then used bigger bit fron irwin set for the hole that I actually needed. The larger bit worked fine, but then it had a pilot hole so it had to do less work. I returned the second, unused, irwin set.

In conclusion. In addition to this irwin cobalt drill bit set I also have irwin tap handle. The handle keep loosening up when I use it. Recently did a bit of reading and I am not the only one who has this problem with irwin tap handles. So. I am NOT BUYING anymore of irwin stuff. I am done with irwin.

Made in China,, the only thing Irwin makes I use are those speedbor bits, and I've only used them sparingly so they may dull and be useless in short order

I bought a few Irwin things I've been very happy with. The Speedbor bits are good and I use them for large 3/4-1-1/4" holes that I found work better than the Bosch DareDevil spade bits. Past that size, I go up to the Irwin self-feeding bits. All of these I have been very happy with.

While I swore off traditional spade bits long ago, I've actually found that they work pretty well for drilling the larger 1/2" and 5/8" deep holes through multi-ply wet AC2. And the Irwin seem to hold up pretty good.

Oh, and the 11% continues tomorrow. Sorry.

I guess we don't have to worry about any more hot deals from Menards since they are seemingly going to be running 11% permanently.

I miss the days when Menards routinely had certain items for 15% to 35% off without the whole rebate BS.

I agree. I was at Menards Friday night and a store clerk indicated, they were having another 11 percent off week then this week. She also indicated that they plan on having 25 weeks of 11 percent this year.

One thing I do lile is it forces Lowe's and HD to offer the 11 percent off as well if you have some nearby. I've been saving a ton between coupons and 11 percent off from lowes

Well I hate to say it, but in my store where they don't bother to remove old sale signs for two weeks, then stock those spaces with nearly the same alternate stuff by same mfr, never on sale, and leave the sale signs up, so you are fooled, I prefer the 11%. At least I get some kind of sale price that way. I'm ignoring all sale signs for now on if not in current circular. Menard's often has overlapping sales and some unadvertised sale prices, so they will lose my business as I'll be ignoring all of those deals forever after now.

I would be sending pictures to corporate as usually that kind of stuff can get them in trouble with state laws.

I've probably been do a dozen different menards in a few states and never saw something that bad. Your store must have some seriously bad management.

Irwin still has some USA cobalt bits that I've been using with good effect, although not on stainless. I've got several pages of tooling set up at CamelCamelCamel, it's suprising how many real deals come around in a years time.

The ONLY reason I got cobalt bits is FOR STAINLESS.
For regular mild steel (Hoffman enclosures, if you know what those are), I will use shop bits and pay nothing for them.

I was watching AvE video about different drill bits a few weeks ago. In the beginning AvE makes this snide comment about people who work with wood... I did not really think about it until now. I now understand much better what AvE felt/meant. The mindset between wood workers and metal worker is VERY different, obviously wood workers have no clue.

Others commented on your post because you lumped all Irwin products together as poor quality, when they seem to work fine for other types of work. Nobody discredited what you said about using them on stainless. No need to insult others.

They are taking it out of context. If you would link that thread or PM it to me, I will go there and chime in with my specific point of view. This way people will know which Irwin products to avoid.

Just to reiterate.
I bought an Irwin tap handle and cobalt drill bits with my own money for work in professional environment, this means that I use them to make money so I can pay for the roof over my head and food on my table. This is not a hobby or DIY BS. What I learned from using these two products is that they work. However, they do not work at 100%. The tap handle gets loose, the small drill bits from the set are dull. Therefore I arrived to conclusion that I will not buy anymore Irwin products. For the tap handle I will likely end up buying new or used Starrett, again, with my own money. For the drill bits I will use whatever shop stocks and pay nothing for them.

I have used Irwin adjustable pliers in the past, the ones with the lock and they seemed to be nice. I thought maybe buy a set, but I had no pressing need and in view of my experience I am no longer interested.

Lowes is so overpriced here compared to Menards that the 11% just brings the price down to Menards levels. I had an 11% coupon from Lowes last fall and I couldn't think of anything that I needed that I couldn't get elsewhere for less.

I do like using the $15 off $50 codes at Lowes when I buy smaller items that I can get to be just over $50.

I guess I'm going to shift my business over to HD then. Home Depot is closer to home anyhow. I am going to see how I can contact someone at Menards corporate to express my displeasure.

I can't stand having to save receipts and then hope and pray my rebates actually come in 8 to 12 weeks. I have probably lost out on $20 in rebates since August 1st because I didn't keep my receipts because it wasn't worth it for $1.50 after the stamp. I didn't realize they would be doing 11% for weeks on end. The chances of actually getting your full 11% are small anyhow. I did major purchases last fall and my rebate check seemed about $20 light, but no way to verify.

I wanted to buy quartz countertops that used to be on sale for $29.99 after rebate about every 6 weeks. Right now with rebate they would be about $37.50. That is more then the $34.99 sale price before rebate they used to have.

I shop HD during menards rebate sales. I can enter my HD receipt numbers and dates directly into HD's site and do not need to send in a paper copy. HD is slow sending the gift cards but they are easy to use. I like the cards better than the paper check from Menards.

I've probably built more Hoffman based controls enclosures than you've seen in a catalog. Not allowed to spec them anymore as I work for the parent company that owns Wiegmann, got to use your own stuff.

Part of Menards game. Not that you can't lose a gift card, but I've put that check through the wash before, and other stupid things that made it a PIA to read. Your loss, their gain

2 nights ago I was erroneously accused of shop lifting at Menards by a chip-on-his shoulder employee. First off, I was in the oscillating tool aisle while this guy gave wrong information to a customer, and I corrected him, telling the customer he had to buy Bosch in order to use the new 'Starlock' interface. Even on the package it says it works in anything. His response was, "that's not what the Bosch rep said." Well your Bosch rep is in the market of selling Bosch, and I'm skeptical Bosch even visits them.

After that, I noticed the **** following me around. I've worked retail, and figured if he wants to waste his time following him, thats fine. It was quite noticable at the checkout, because I was going from lane to lane, looking for a particular candy (Wiley rootbeer chews, yum!). Well I end up checking out, and decide mid-checkout to have the cashier ring up another for 2 items, so i didn't have to wait in line again. One was some cinnamon wafers, and the other was O'Keefes hand moisturizer w/ free lip balm (thought was a good deal w/ the free extra). I go back to the other checkout aisle it was in, grab them, walk past the cashier I had ring them up, and walk out, to be run down by 3 employees.

Well that employee immediately starts accusing me of shop lifting. Takes my receipt and says these aren't on here. I told him I paid for 2. He kept on saying, I saw you have the girl take these off you transaction, then you put it in your bag. I look at the receipt myself, and say what the hell are 'ranch beans on here for?" he didnt care, and kept shoving the O'keefes in my face. I asked him, where are my beans? nothing. The other employee was smart enough to realize what I was saying. Turns out the O-Keefes was ringing up wrong, and @ only $.75. I never did get an apology, though I think I will go back and demand one. He was so pissed he was wrong twice with me.

So TLDR; If you come across the OKeefes hand cream that comes with a free lip balm, buy it up! only $.75, that's my deal (and rant)

The thing about Menard's check type rebates is that you don't pay tax on that amount when you redeem it. If it were a Visa type or a store gift card, it will charge tax on the purchase. That means 7% or so goes to the local and state....7% is 7%. I mean you paid tax on the rebate amount during the initial purchase/transaction...Why should or why would you want to pay it again.

At least that's how it is in OH.

The Irwin end caps that have been there for a couple weeks were all on sale yesterday. Stacked with the 11% there were some good deals on some miscellaneous impact and drill bites. Many items were 50% off.

Same in Minnesota, but there also wouldn't be tax applied if they just gave 11% off without the whole rebate BS.

That's basically a sale price. They want you to forget about sending the rebate. I get it, it's all part of the game. I do my best to follow through with my end so they have to follow through with theirs. Yeah, it's effort, but I understand how it works from the get go.

I searched it one day for #2 Phillips impact bits. I looked for like 5 mins and even asked a clerk. There were none and I almost think it was a ploy to get you to accidentally buy the wrong bit and then come back and buy a #2 from the regular aisle. That or hoping Joe homeowner will grab a #1 Phillips and not know the difference, to get rid of stock.

Is this new? In the past Home Depot still required a physical form be mailed in., but I haven't look into it for a good nine months or more. This makes me want to shop at HD even more.
