And according to the Menards employee....... They are bringing back the sales along with the 11% rebate!

Now if they would only bring back the 11% on gift cards.

I'm glad to see the sales along with rebate. Haven't had that for quite awhile! But FWIW nothing has been in the ad's worth getting for me.

Exactly, they have the 11% and nothing worth while in the ad. I doubt we will see the gift cards on the 11% rebate program, the owner didn't realize people would buy gift cards and use them right there, he figured that one out pretty quick when he was essentially paying 22% in rebate on some already sale items.

Regardless, I'll have to check the ad online tomorrow morning. I am really hoping some 90lb bags of portland go on sale, its rare but I need about 30 bags.

Based on the size of his empire I'd say John Menard is a pretty savvy businessman, he knew exactly what he was doing when he offered the rebate on gift cards.

Can Menards just STOP with the 11% rebate sales please! Their regular sales often discount items by more than 11%. I also get my savings right now and I'm not loaning my money to John Menard for 8 weeks. Cash wise I'm not saving anything if I wasn't planning on more purchases in the future.

The 11% rebate is good for things that rarely go on sale, but one week is enough. Menards puts stuff on sale often enough if you can wait a month you'll get it on sale. Decking, retaining wall blocks, doors, and siding seem to be on sale at least once a month during the spring and summer.

Why did we only see it once? I think he made a mistake, savvy or not - and I bet he would admit it was a mistake

Possibly, but my take on it was that it happened during a period when sales are slow and they decided to dump their old stock. My local store had a huge clearance section (an entire aisle) that they'd been steadily marking down since Christmas and nothing seemed to be moving. By the time the 11% off gift cards thing was over it was completely cleaned out. If I recall it was extended from one week to two; I wouldn't think they'd have done that if they were losing their shirt. And who knows, maybe we'll see it again some day (crossing my fingers).

And even if he did loose money, Forbes lists him as one of the richest men in the world, what's a few million bucks to a billionaire?

Menards doesn't just extend their rebate sales another week on a last minute whim. Newspaper inserts are planned well in advance. The actual inserts themselves are usually printed over a week before they are delivered in the Sunday paper. Newspapers generally receive inserts at least five days before delivery date and often earlier than that. Heck, the inserts are usually stuffed into the paper by Friday before delivery.

The last time they let you buy the gift cards at the 11% off was not any kind of mistake. They advertised it on tv and highlighted the gift cards as something you could buy 11% off ! It was just marketing. I wish I had put more on mine back then - thought they would do it every year or so but did not this year. - Paul

It was definitely planned and on purpose. I think it was probably a test to see how it worked out financially. Menards sales on individual items regularly go over 20%, so the combination wasn't a big deal. They probably wanted to see whether it increased sales sufficiently and, combined with breakage on the gift cards, was worth doing.

Yeah I didn't mean to say it wasn't preplanned and advertised, I just don't think they realized that people would buy the card 11% and turn around and use it right there for another 11%.
The one and only time I know of they did this was the two weeks following Dec 26 2013. I remember reading at the time, that many location cashiers would not allow the double dipping, but at the same time many people did do it.

My point isn't it was wrong, or it was a computer glitch - simply the fact that they hadn't planned on 'savvy customers' that walked in, bought a $250 gift card. Walked to the back and picked up $250 in plywood, wheeled her up to the front and paid with the gift card for another 11%.

Therefore we likely won't see it again.

We were doing some remodeling at my previous workplace when the 11% gift cards was happening. My boss went in and purchased $10k in gift cards, and he asked if that was the most they had ever seen. The lady said somebody earlier had picked up $20k worth.

Not sure if that's a good thing for John Menard, but I can't see him getting $30k in one day from 2 people a bad thing.

Looks like 11% rebates are finally over. Crescent hand tools are on sale. All appear to be about 20% off. The sockets are made by Apex in Taiwan. I've been needing some deep 3/8 to complete my set and was on the fence about getting these or the Masterforce, but for 20% off and the Crescents being 6pt instead of 12pt, I'll probably bite.

Note:

At 11 PM CST, I checked and my local Menards store had the latest sale prices from the new (Sunday) ad online, and also still had the 11% running. So for a while, you were able to order online with Sunday's sale prices + the 11% off.

The managers/associates were specifically told that it was okay for customers to do that. Of course they had planned people would do that.

Crescent is Apex. The stuff is nicer than HF except for the rats. Not a fan of those.

Hmm, good to know. How close is Crescent to Gearwrench then? I have quite a few old US made Crescents, pliers, adjustables, all great stuff, but nothing really made in last 10 years except a pair of cutters that was terrible. - Paul

crescent brand, gearwrench brand, masterforce sockets, ratchets, wrenches, and allen brand (you may still find some wrenches on the racks), are all Apex.

The Bluebird 50' air hoses are $20 right now, and in the Crazy Days Sale ad the Bluebird 50' hose reel is $50. From what I've heard and seen the hoses are pretty decent. The reels are the typical medium quality but for $50 you can't go wrong. The comparable reel (hose is worse) at HF is $90 w/o coupon. The Bluebird is normally $70 at Menards IIRC, and I noticed they had moved them to an end aisle so I figured they were going on sale soon.

Debating getting the Masterforce angle grinder for $35, even though I just picked up the Hitachi the other week.

Don't. I got one a few weeks ago when it was $29 after rebate. It's a dog.
The 3" wire wheel is a good deal.

Not too bad a deal on Rustoleum paint cans. I may get a few of those. Having said that, I just tried to use some rusty metal rustoleum primer cans i got a few months back on a deal. Not 1 of 5 cans would spray at all. Junk. No problems with other types I got at the same time. Some kind of quality problem I think recently on the Rusty Metal Primer ones from Rustoleum as never had that happen before on new cans. - Paul

Got one of the Hanson locking pliers for 4 bucks. I am sold on them, going to be replacing all my vice grips with them including my fab tools.

Just a note, don't expect them to replace regular vise grip entirely. They are great for fab work where you need to just hold pieces in place, but they don't work great when trying to stick them on a rounded bolt, as you can only adjust the tension so tight where as on traditional locking pliers, you're only limited by how strong your hands can squeeze it down, or use a ratchet strap to get a seriously strong grip! The teeth are also pretty soft, but so are most locking pliers brands (except Knipex and Grip-On).

So fab work= awesome and way faster than anything else
Work where an incredibly powerful grip is needed= not the best choice.

They must mean the Benchmark ones on sale for the 4 bucks, made in China. These don't feel terrible actually for that price. BUT, nothing will *ever* beat an old US Petersen Vice Grips as far as I'm concerned and the Benchmark don't even come close to that standard. Modern China made Irwins, can't say as I refuse to ever own one of those.

One thing I noticed looking carefully at the ad today - you can get up to 40 free cabinet pulls after rebate! That is a deal and enough to do about a whole house or shop or garage if you could use them. A few other deals there too depending on if you can use it or not. - Paul

The $4 led pencil lights are sold under another brand on Amazon for $20 and 4.5 stars. Picked one up - brighter than the CM ones, happy with purchase the only issue is the magnet is somewhat weak, it will hold it up on a smooth non-vibrating surface but thats it. Also only hold it up/down not sideways. I'm still buying another.
