Seems almost like a bait and switch to me. Their made in the usa sales / fliers could lead many to think most of their stuff is made in the USA, when in fact, most of their stuff is about as cheap as it gets.

The only place I'd rather work less than Menards, is walmart.

fact. they push their tool shop junk pretty hard. something like 20 bucks for an electric grinder. the stuff is just junk. with that said, plenty of decent deals on home stuff like shingles and boards. most people i know got there before home depot.

with that said, our home town stop is mills fleet farm, as previously mentioned. pretty much the same thing as menards, but they are a little more hometownish. in their weekly flier, they print at the bottom of the page the most important thing to happen in the u.s military during that week in history. they keep a pretty good reputation

Menards is a great store, and it will be great to have the first one open in our immediate area -- nearest is a hundred miles away now. My brother and I have bought many things there that we've been very happy with.

They have a pretty strong commitment to US production. Every summer around the 4th they put out their made-in-USA circular. Everything in the flyer is US-made, and the little town or city where each is made is part of the descriptions. I keep that flyer for months it delights me so.

And to see made-in-China Craftsman ratchet wrenches in Sears just breaks my heart. Like the death of an old friend.

Don

Yep Cape Girardeau has a Menards go there at least once every other day. Haven't been in lowes since menards opened only reason I go to sears is because I mow the property. Lol

Menards is cool...no doubt! I used to work at the one in Ft Dodge Iowa, the manager is a jacka$$..... After screwing me out of my bonus.... (that my wife had planned to buy our two children Christmas with) told me that my children did not need any presents for Christmas.....that SOB really doesn't know how lucky he is that we were in the middle of the store in front of customers.......that was in 2004, and my blood still boils when i think about it!

The Tool Shop brand is their entry level tool to compete with Harbor Freight. As a whole, they're not to bad for what they are. I do think the TS power tools are better than their HF counterparts. I could probably say that about the hand tools too.

Menards uses Masterforce to compete with Craftsman. It's a much better product than Tool Shop, and the wrenches and sockets are rebranded Allen and made in the USA.

I also find that Menards has more "professional" items for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, ect. Parts and supplies your just not going to get at Home Depot or Lowes.

Some of the tools as stated before are made by apex.I have a buddy that works for Apex tools , located in dayton ohio. He likes it and says great place to work. He runs brown and sharp bar machines and makes socket blanks with one side broached from his machines. Just an FYI

Why I dislike Menards...

All you ever get from them is store credit. Once they get your money they keep it. They do not have a refund policy worth a darn. Secondly their rebate program is a bait and switch as well. They advertise lower prices till you get in the store and see it is a mail in rebate offer. The rebate is also store credit only as well. They are very misleading just like leading you to believe they are a USA merchandiser. Look around, a lot of it is made in China. At my local Lowes, I find them far more consistent and helpful. I have bought many large items from them and they frequently offer free delivery. Being disabled as well I am treated far better at Lowes, as far as assistance goes. I have more times than I care to recall struggled with a load and had employees walk right past me. Lets add the fact at Meanards you also bag and load your own goods. Their checkout system is flawed. Much like Wally World, 25 registers and one is open. I will admit a deal can be found occasionally but I do more business at Lowes. In my location they are just down the street from each other. Makes it easy to cross shop for the best price. If I had to travel to a Menards I wouldn't take the time. I also will admit I prefer the Masterforce tool box to the Lowes box. Decent price for a decent box.

I guess I don't understand...you berate Menards for only having a few USA products, but you love Lowes who has almost exclusively Chinese products that are of very poor quality? You must have a bad Menards because I've been offered help many times and I do not have to bag my own purchases?

Ahem.......... I bought an air compressor, with a card.
used compressor for a week, it caught fire. Brought it back. Did not have receipt. Went to kiosk, entered info, swiped the card that was used to purchase. Printed out a replica receipt. Returned compressor for new, no questions asked. In the interim, had used another compressor to get us by.
Sooooooo.......... new compressor sat unused, in sealed box, for 2 weeks. Went back to store, printed receipt, got choice of credit to the card used, or cash back, no questions asked.
And....... they bag my goods here.

Bait and switch? Their made in the USA flyer lists the products that are made in the USA, seems pretty cut and dry to me. Yes they sell lots of stuff that isn't US made, just like every other store out there. But from my experience they have far more USA made products then home depot and lowes put together. They do have a very cheap line of tools that are complete junk, harbor frieght quality if you will. But they also try to have a decent line of tools to chose from also.

I was there today and bought a new bathroom vanity and sink counter top both made in the US for a good price on sale. Bought a set of plastic saw horses that are made in the US, nothing special but get the job done.

Bought a new 2' level also. It's a masterforce that is a rebranded stabila made in Germany. Was really surprised when I saw them and noticed they were rebranded stabila.

Menards has a ton of cheap tools but they also have way more quality tools than any other box store out there and I don't think they do any bait and switch. They advertise certain products made in the US and don't switch anything.

Those who are claiming bait and switch should be ashamed of themselves. This weeks flier is nothing but USA items. Every ad has items that are clearly marked USA. Anyone who thinks every item in the store is USA just because of a made in the USA sale is ignorant.

Hogwash!

On a similar subject, anyone who wants to join my class action lawsuit against Red Lobster for false advertising, hop on board now! I went in once, and not only were they selling more than lobster, but it wasn't even on sale! The shrimp was!

Total bait and switch!

I just got back from my Menards 5 minutes away! Ironically I was just there looking at tools because my local store is in the process of expanding and becoming more of a "SUPER" menards, meaning a lot more tools, many of which are made in the USA and the added the food section too. I don't think I need to go anywhere else now!

except somewhere with nice weather for your sanity, 82 here yesterday

I'm a long time Menards customer and have been happy with thier service and return policy. I think that they have one of the fairest return policies around with refunds in the form that you paid, a kiosk to look up and print a copy of any reciept that was tied to your credit card, and a pretty efficeint staff. Understand the comments about store rebates but I go there so often that I just leave them in my truck and use them within a a week or so of them coming in the mail.

That said, I still shop Lowes and Home Depot for some items as each store has its own strengths. Consider ourselves fortunate as there is one of each close to us -- Menards 1.5 miles, Home Depot 1.75 miles, Lowes 2.4 miles. Plus, there is a Habitat ReStore just 1.9 miles away. Needless to say, I can find almost anything that I want in a 5 mile loop.

As for Sears, just 1.2 miles from our house. I rarely go there unless they have a good deal on made in USA tools, and those are getting less and less common. A bit sad as I have been a loyal Craftsman customer for 40 years as was my dad before me. Seems that they have lost touch with the customers that made it such a strong brand.
