One more update for last week. The crew started the siding and installed the steel roof. A guy has basically scampered up the edge of the roof and walked along the ridge clearing the snow - I can't imagine doing that!

Siding and roof and windows

This picture gives you a sense of the loft. I love the space and volume and how much is usable. We're thinking of installing knee walls for storage. Roof Height at peak is about 15' (the skylights are set around 6')

View from a bit further away. We think the size fits the land quite well

The knee walls will take the grand feeling away.

On the rear overhang, there are 2x4 "walls?" . I am curious what they will be.

Overhaul, a very good build and thanks for the photos.

I see your a member of your security team in the foreground. A Golden doodle?

If you look at the sketches, you'll see the the overhang wall is to continue the lines of the horizontal siding. It will look like a flat roof overhang from the side. Behind the wall is the traditionally sloped roof to shed the snow. So, mostly a visual thing.

You are also correct - the dog is a golden doodle. She is wonderful and a good barker!

Question for the GJ gang (will likely cross post this too) - the support steel pillar for the steel beam was installed. It's bolted to the beam and secured to a concrete foundation block (see the pics at start to see what this looks like.

My question is that the base of the steel pillar looks like it could be buried under the slab when it's poured. I haven't fully verified this but I think 2"'of insulatation and 5" slab will place the base of the pillar within/under the slab.

Is that a problem?

Should not be a problem. Would have been nice to have engineered your plan to not have any posts in the middle of the shop floor.

A few more progress pictures. The first is the steel support pillar for the main beam.

The second picture shows the siding now on the building as well as the facia and soffits

Final picture shows the detail of the horizontal siding. I like the mixture but may change the transition (where they've installed the trim piece). Only other miss is that the horizontal siding was supposed to 'wrap' around to where the man door is. They ended up putting the trim on vertically there - so will get them to fix that section.

To date this is about six days of build (excluding the foundation). Things wi slow down as I'm waiting for the special order man door to arrive and to get the garage doors installed - the crates are at least now inside.

More importantly, I need the foundation to be frost free so I can pour the slab. Still need to make final decisions on heating system(s) and finalize electrical plan, interior finish plan, etc. We've also decided to match the trim and roof on the smaller straw bale cabin as well. Lots to do!

Interesting. Why is that?

Where I work a knee wall is part of the wall framing. It extends beyond the second floor to provide additional headroom closer to the plane of the roof, due to the increased height of the top plate.

Why is it that every time someone sees a picture of snow, some smart *** has to pipe up with the oldest joke in the book? Because they don't know any better?

Hell, I lived in Dallas for 20+ yrs & we saw snow quite a few times. Even had a lot of fun in it.

To the OP, great looking barn. I'm jealous.

Got it. In this case it's non-structural to create space for storage

First, I really like the design. Clean. Simple.

A few more progress pictures. The first is the steel support pillar for the main beam.

I don't know what the cost difference would be, but I think I would have sized that steel beam so that no center post would be required.

Looks awesome CDNC, and what beautiful scenery.

Only been to Collingwood a few times, and it sure is a nice place.
