SO i have some ****** lighting in my shop its 40x43' 1720sqft

so im looking at this ad wondering if these would be a good fit for my shop and if so how many would i need?

my voltage choices are 110volt, or 220volt.

Way overpriced,he should be paying you to take them away.They are noisy energy hogs and need plenty of time to warm up to full brightness and even longer when when hot.
T8 or T5 fluorescent is the way you want to go.

You can get the lamps new for less than $20 and the fixtures new for less than $100. He's dreaming on the prices that he put in his ad.
But, you'd hate them anyway....

I sold 10 used Cooper fixtures EXACTLY like the one on the right (but in better shape) for $30 each on Craigslist about 13 years ago

Used HID lights can be had for a fraction of that cost. I put up three 175W HIDs as temporary lighting in my 32 x 42 barn (17' high). Each fixture, with lamp, cost $15. Work great, only take 5 minutes for full light. Not enough light for detail work at night, but enough for now.

You didn't mention the height of your shop (the picture isn't showing up for me) but those light fixtures in the Craigslist ad look like they are for high bay use, which would be at 20 feet high or more.

Too bad the seller cannot read, there is no such thing as a MH ballast rated at 110 or 220, and 480 volts is usually a single voltage ballast.

Alright thanks guys, I'll continue to wait until I can do more fixtures above in stead of these industrial style.

My thought was like 4 of these would provide a nice addition to my dark shop.

Those lights on the wall would probably give you much better results if you could move them to the ceiling.

leave those perimeter lights in and add 4 6 lamp T5HO fixtures on the ceiling.
put the sunglasses on.
Switch alternating lights separately and have a separate switch for the perimeter lights as well

the howards are USA and $100 ea to your door
get the sunglasses out,thats why I say switch them in alternating line.
all 4 and the existing ones on it will be like daylight.

Each fixture will draw about 4 amps each at 120v, possibly a little less. 4 fixtures will draw about 1440 watts, which at fourteen cents a kwh will be about twenty cents an hour to operate. About the same as a portable space heater.

I would look at six four bulb fixtures to spread the light out. Given that you have a white ceiling, in my way of thinking, a 8ft strip, with four... 4ft bulbs, pairs in tandem (such as the ones discussed in THIS thread,) would do well to spread the light out some, the ceiling acting as a reflector.

Way overpriced...

When I sold a bunch of these, I was asking $30-40 each and deep discounts for multiple units. I averaged about $25 per in the end, and made a healthy profit (paid for my lights that I installed in my shop, including installation cost.)

This seller is dreaming.

Oh, and BTW, I paid about $90 for (IIRC) about 35 lights when I bought them.

I paid $40 each for, 13 total fixtures, 400 watt MH fixtures with some extra bulbs, back in about 2005 or 2006. It took me a couple of years to get around to installing them in late 2008. Mine were from a Wal-Mart or Sams Club, all of those in the Atlanta area removed the open bottomed MH fixtures and installed T8 strips with light sensors and skylights. This was a safety issue as much as a energy saving one, since the open bottomed fixtures were banned from new installations in publicly accessible buildings. Mine have the translucent polycarbonate reflectors for lots of uplight, which I consider necessary to good lighting in a shop.

Might want to confirm their add claim that lamps are included since the "A" in the Howard part number means "No Lamps" according to the Howard spec sheet here.

Part number for fixture with 5000K Lamps would be HFLPE454IPSMV00000I

Mounting Height = 16.5 ft. minimum.

Open garage doors will interfere with first fixture row. I'm looking forward to seeing how you mount the fixtures on the room side of the open garage doors.

Lots of light in my vaulted area, I would have gone fluorescent but these were better for my immediate needs & budget!

I put 6 low bays in my shop years ago, now looking to go fluorescent. Don't let the low cost sway you into them. they're not worth it. Mine are 400W low bays. noisy and take a long time to warm up.

I'll be going with 4 bulb overhead led fixtures when money allows. Hardest part is getting them up there, and then wired in properly
