Who is using metal pegboard and do you like it? It is thinner than fiberboard ...do the hooks stay in ok? The thickest I have seen is 22g ...

I'm looking at Wall Control metal pegboard panels for a garage workbench project - expensive (about 5-10x the price of 3/16" hardboard pegboard on a $/sq ft basis) but excellent reputation. Stuart at toolguyd.com loves 'em. You have the option of using 1/4" heavy-duty hooks, or the special Wall Control hooks that use vertical slots instead of holes. For hooks, I'm going to try out Wallpeg plastic hooks - they're cheeeeeeap compared to the premium offerings, are supposed to hold up well, and most importantly, have a reputation for fitting tightly in 1/4" pegboard holes. Also, they're made in Texas.... I'm planning on buying a couple of variety packs, experimenting with layouts (for reference, the pegboard area above the workbench will be 32" high by 72" wide), and selectively buying stronger hangers if needed for heavier items (circular saw, shelves, bins, etc).

The Wall Control panels are about $35 for two (2) 32" x 16" panels, in unpainted galvanized steel, about $45 for a similar set of painted panels. Available with Prime two-day shipping, if that floats your boat.

I use perforated 16 gauge steel with 3/16" holes 1/4" center to center ordered from Mcmaster carr. These are just small 12" square, dedicated to the tools for the machine its at in my workplace. I keep the hooks in place with a small tyrap or ziptie.

That's a really neat way to organize station-specific tools.

I just installed a 16" x 48" galvanized Alligator pegboard in my renovated storage shed. Sold in packages of two for $50 plus very reasonable shipping. Those things are hefty, no wimpy flexing. Got here in a few days without a scratch on them. Like Wall Control, they've also got pegboard in a plethora of colors including one with a huge American flag on it. Lots of peripherals like shelves in 3" and 5" widths with included cool fasteners and spring clamps for things like brooms and skinny, long handled garden tools. They've even got one packaged to hold your rods and reels.

I've had a couple of 24 x 48 Diamond Life aluminum pegboards over a workbench in the garage that I also like a lot but you have to occasionally hit them with some aluminum polish/Nev-R-Dull which is sort of a pain. If keeping things spiffed up doesn't matter to you then it's a moot point. The Alligatorboard units don't require any maintenance, just pop 'em up there and use 'em.

As far as hooks go I've had no complaints with off-the-shelf stuff but I've heard good things about the Wallpeg system as cshield09 mentioned. I just haven't had a compelling reason to pull the trigger on those yet. Texas-made is always a good thing around here.

Did you end up trying this - how did those Wallpeg hooks end up working out on the Wall Contol board?

I made my Perf Panels from .100 thk 5052-H32 Aluminum. It was some old material we had lying around for quite sometime. Works great.

Here is one I did for my reloading bench:

A single wide bench:

An old neighbor who worked at a metal fabricator gave me a small pile of stainless steel peg board from a sale that fell through. I have used it here and there over the years and, yes the hooks do tend to be a bit loose but still very functional. A little bit of silicone will take care of it if it is annoying.

I haven't had my Wall Control for very long but so far I'm very happy with the product. Not cheap but also not too bad if you buy the scratch and dent stuff from www.cheappegboard.com

I never liked the look of pegboard but took a gamble on Wall Control. I'm still not a fan of the fact that any kind of pegboard looks like a wall with holes in it (because it is) which isn't as nice looking as just a normal wall. But the painted metal panels look much better than wood pegboard. And the versatility of this setup has definitely won me over.

Necrothreading here but this thread was very helpful when I just went shopping for pegboard for my shop.

I had never heard of Wallpeg, Wall Control or cheappegboard.com but I took all the links and info in this thread to heart and ordered.

The Wallpeg plastic hooks fit fine in the steel Wall Control board. I actually like 'em, but they will rock left/right quite a bit when installed (I don't find this a problem for my uses).

In contrast the old school steel locking hooks fit much more tightly but in many cases it's almost TOO tight because the locking peg is really meant to "squeeze" into wood-product pegboard. But trying to cram a steel peg into a steel hole is much less forgiving and sometimes you have to gently tap the steel hooks into place with a rubber deadblow.

The 1.5" Wallpeg L hooks will also flex if you have heavy tools near the end, so I use a mix of steel hooks for my bigger/heavy/multiple wrenches. But at $20 shipped for 100 hooks they're very affordable and one can easily afford an occasional failure (I haven't had any failures yet but it's been up for all of 48 hours).

Anyway I'll get some more comprehensive pics of my wrench wall (I freakin' love it) once I get more hooks (I used up 100 very quickly) and some more wrenches are inbound from toolsdelivered too :D

I was extremely impressed w how the Wall Control board was packaged. There were 4 sheets per in the smaller boxes on the bottom of photo, then those 2 boxes slid into the large box on top.

All boxes were HEAVY cardboard and all seams had LOTS of staples - no shipping tape.

The product itself appears perfect although I did not go over it w a fine tooth comb (I don't care, it's pegboard). Everything from cheappegboard.com is supposed to be scratch & dent but I found no scratches or dents.

Really a nice made in U.S. product

That's great! I can't say my experience was that stellar (not that I'm complaining). The pegboard was packed OK but I did definitely see flaws, both in the powder coating and some pieces were a bit bent or banged up. Pretty minor stuff, nothing I cared about - it's a working garage, not a show stopper. The accessories however were all just tossed into a box with one small piece of packing paper. Luckily the powder coat is durable and there wasn't any damage.

So far I'm loving my Wall Control from cheappegboard and will probably order more accessories eventually, perhaps more pegboard for other areas down the road. Great stuff!

That is a great idea! I have so many wrenches in 1 drawer at work. It becomes a pain sorting through for what I'm looking for.

People get really passionate about hanging tools on the wall - - specifically some people hate it so much you'd think we're talking politics.

Personally I love it. I had my old shop this way (wrenches on the wall) and ever since 2005 I've been meaning to re-create it. It only took me 12 years to get around to it. Where does time go?

I literally just put this up last night.

This is from a company called diamond life.

They put a backer behind the steel so the pegboard hooks inset securely, like a hardboard pegboard.

I will report back once I have some "miles" on it, but it's a very high quality piece. Not cheap, but you only live once!!

Hi Ign, I'm looking at doing a metal pegboard as well and like you, am concerned about how well "normal" peg hooks stay on, given metal boards are a lot thinner. You said the wallpeg hooks rock a bit, but they do STAY ON though when you remove a tool? Thank you for any insight you may have.

I use masking tape at the end of the hooks to keep them stay on the pegboard, because otherwise they do fall off when you get your tools.351b44abaa7e9b783c59d9d9a7c315c5.jpg
