There were some threads I remember where the demise of Radio Shack was lamented as the store was once a place where electronic components could be purchased.
I definitely have struggled to find a good source for things like AV component parts/tools and simple networking gear/tools. So I think this is a tool issue to some extent.
The big box tool stores have some things, but it seems like you need to go online for something simple like a 25' 3.5mm extension cable for some portable speakers. Enter Microcenter.
Apparently this a national or at least regional chain. There is one in the Minneapolis area and it seems like a pretty cool place. Unlike our local legendary electronics retailer (Best Buy), Microcenter at least seems pretend to care about the business sector they compete in.
Seems like a viable alternative to Radio Shack. They have a pretty good selection of component parts for computers and some AV stuff. Also have a decent array of tools & equipment (soldering kits, etc.)
Overall, it just seems to be a nice place to wander around and ask questions. Also picked up an inexpensive USB docking station to replace one I bought online that was flaking out. Stuff like that where I just want to grab it and go without researching details online.
Apparently Fry's electronics may offer similar stock, but they are not located around here. Are there any other viable Radio Shack replacements that people are aware of?
