There were some threads I remember where the demise of Radio Shack was lamented as the store was once a place where electronic components could be purchased.

I definitely have struggled to find a good source for things like AV component parts/tools and simple networking gear/tools. So I think this is a tool issue to some extent.

The big box tool stores have some things, but it seems like you need to go online for something simple like a 25' 3.5mm extension cable for some portable speakers. Enter Microcenter.

Apparently this a national or at least regional chain. There is one in the Minneapolis area and it seems like a pretty cool place. Unlike our local legendary electronics retailer (Best Buy), Microcenter at least seems pretend to care about the business sector they compete in.

Seems like a viable alternative to Radio Shack. They have a pretty good selection of component parts for computers and some AV stuff. Also have a decent array of tools & equipment (soldering kits, etc.)

Overall, it just seems to be a nice place to wander around and ask questions. Also picked up an inexpensive USB docking station to replace one I bought online that was flaking out. Stuff like that where I just want to grab it and go without researching details online.

Apparently Fry's electronics may offer similar stock, but they are not located around here. Are there any other viable Radio Shack replacements that people are aware of?

Mycablemart is another great source, particularly for AV equipment, both online and in the Twin Cities area. Can do a local pickup, or visit their small retail location in Eden Prairie.

Kin Creed,

I agree that Microcenter is a great place to buy computer hardware and software (PC and Mac); assembly tools (carry Felo precision screwdrivers); a section devoted to Raspberry Pi; televisions, video game systems, sound systems, and more. The stores are huge!

The staff members are very helpful. I get asked at least three times per visit if I need help. At Best Buy, you have to track down the staff members since help is scarce. If help is available, you have to wait many minutes while that staff member finishes with that other customer. Best Buy is poor with customer service. I rather shop at Microcenter than Best Buy any day. Plus, Microcenter's prices are internet competitive with a good number of their in stock products.

Microcenter is one of my frequent stops if traffic is bad on the way home from work (takes me on an alternate route past that store). Fry's is another one I like, much bigger but not as conveniently located for me.

There is only ONE Microcenter in the Metro Detroit area and it is over 30 miles away !

Surprised there isn't one in Ann Arbor !

Microcenter was one of my favorite places (good prices, good service, knowledgeable people) when they had one in the SF Bay Area. They closed the store and the only one in California is in SoCal.

You can also try the Electronic Center in Golden Valley, MN. on highway 55. They have all sorts of electronic connectors and components. Check 'em out....

I wondered what happened to them - I used to go there when they were downtown but didn't know where they moved to. Coincidentally I used to work at a place that was next door to their current building.

One other place in the Twin Cities to look for electronic components is Axman Surplus, although their inventory is pretty hit and miss.

There is a Microcenter on my way home from work, and yeah it's pretty awesome. It's also always jam packed with customers so obviously I'm not the only one that feels that way about them. I visited a Fry's store when I was in California a few years back and was impressed with them as well.

I've got two Fry's and MicroCenter a 20 min drive away. Neither is a substitute for what Radio Shack used to be, but that is just reality online sources have replaced all but industrial sources on parts.

MicroCenter has mostly junk tools, with a few trade quality items. Fry's is a much better source for real electronics tools, but still far short of online places.

Where MC shines is build your own PC, staff that know computers, and super easy returns.

The reason they're so eager to help you at MicroCenter is because they make commission on sales. Thus the reason they put a sticker on the item if they help you with it. Still doesn't change the fact that it's an awesome store and the staff is knowledgeable.
