I use Charles Neil's blotch control. it has worked well for me.

He has a DVD series - something like 10 discs that is a great resource if you are interested in learning more about stains, dyes, and all kinds of finishing techniques.

Bob Flexner's book "Understanding Wood Finishing" is an excellent reference as well. I happen to have two copies. If you PM me your address, I'd be happy to send one to you. You've shared so much of your time and talent, it's a small token of thanks -

Portland - the cool one.
Here in Portland we don't get much snow. But when we do it seems to cripple our little town. Last Tuesday night it snowed. Predictably it was chaos. What was surprising was that one snow storm would get us five, yes, FIVE snow days. It's hard for me to comprehend because I grew up in Colorado and unless the snow drifted over a school bus we didn't get snow days. I don't think I ever had one in fact.

All that to say that I don't get much done when the kids are home so my shop time has been decimated by frigid temperatures and munchkin entertainment. The fun part is that we made a two room snow cave and a luge run.

The other part of this unforeseen forced down time is catching up on some relaxing. That means Youtube in front of the fireplace. Which brings me to the reason for the post. You really should check out my new favorite person on Youtube. This Old Tony.

Here's one to get you started:

Making an Espresso Pot

His videos are instructive yet funny and entertaining enough that you may end up watching them all. That's what I'm doing at the moment...

Gregor - thanks for sharing that vid from The Old Tony. Couldnt sleep here on the east coast and just did a little binge watching. The thing I loved was that copy Hassfold Bender - its like the machine I never knew I needed in my shop that now I must have!

Be careful watching this old tony. You will want a mill/lathe/shapper etc. It gets expensive quick. If you haven't seen clickspring yet you should check him out. Not as funny as tony but it's amazing what that guy builds in such a tiny machine shop.

Gregor have read through you thread(s) and have really enjoyed it and learned many things. When you have time to post more information about taking pictures and handling the raw format it would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Holy **** it's the last page. I stumbled across this rabbit hole about 5 weeks ago, it has taken me this long to finish because of the 13 other rabbit holes inside of it. Thanks to you, Gregor, I realized that it was time to get a real camera so after some extensive research I decided on a used Nikon D600 on ebay, that's on it's way. The Super Promecha pencil and new Moleskine journal make me feel like I'm some kind of professional until I open it and see my elementary drawings. I can't even wrap my head around switching over to metric for festool but suspect that will happen soon.

Really enjoyed this thread and looking forward to the rest of it. I was relieved that I didn't miss the garage party! I laughed out loud when you picked up the trailer and said "I'm just going to clean it" knowing within the next page you'd be rebuilding something. Your home, family and work is nothing short of beautiful and you do an excellent job documenting your journey, thank you for sharing it with us.

Cheers!
Chase

P.S. I hope Jorge comes out on top of his situation, that's a damn shame.

Thanks guys.

I am very happy that this thread has proven to be entertaining and informative. I like the process and it helps keep me on track and making progress, which, three years in, is something that can be difficult to maintain.

I'm hoping to dive into the next project at the house next week - those built in bump outs in the living room. I've changed my mind about them a few times but I think that I've got a plan.

I found an old post that talks a bit about one technique that I've used before and thought it might be interesting here - until I can do a post on post so to speak.

Just finished plowing through this thread over the course of a few afternoons. Great stuff Gregor. Thanks for sharing. I've bookmarked a bunch of pages (plus product links and FOG threads) for future reference.

FWIW you've done a great job selling the real-world virtues of the Festool lineup. It's one thing to read marketing copy or watch a video. It's another to see a real project go together. They were already on my radar, and my local indy hardware store is a full-line Festool retailer, so will have to go take a closer look when we start to thaw out and think of springtime projects around the house.

Cheers!

So this weekend is Portland's The 1 Moto Show and while I've had a couple of bikes in the show this year I'm the official photographer for the show. Something I've wanted to do since I first attended. It's going to be a good year - the space is three times larger and there are going to be over 160 motorcycles. Insane.

I will be there all day tomorrow and all day Friday. If you go (and you should if you're within 1000 miles!) please find me and say hi. I love catching up with people who have followed along on this epic journey.

Since this is a big opportunity and I have full creative freedom I've decided to go big on light. Literally. Thanks to friends at Broncolor USA I have been loaned some crazy cool lighting tools like this Para 220. Looks like a soft light but it's not - it's a giant hard directional parabolic reflector. It's about the price of a motorcycle and makes some absolutely delicious light.

Hope to see you at the show and once it's over I promise that I'm going to get working on the house again. I swear! In the mean time I'm going to be posting a lot of shots from the show on my Instagram so give me a follow there to see what you're missing!

Green emojis - nice!

I think this falls under the "Sorry, not sorry" category. You're doing a new floor or is it paneling? Looking forward to hearing how it goes. Oh, and congrats on the new tools. Track saws rule!

Gregor

New floor(oak floorboards) and then a wall of cabinets/shelves, amongst other things.

Binged watched This Old Tony. Great entertainment and craftsmanship. Then fell into the videos made by Stefan Gotteswinter. Now inspired to get my woodworking projects done and restore my Southbend Model A along with it's Swiss made end mill. Until watching these videos, never knew there were such treasures in my garage....

BTW, looked at your webpage. Very impressive!

Thank you.

I had ran across your 950 thread on Adventure Rider years ago, and have been mildly obsessed with this thread on here. It's not until just now that I have connected the dots. Love your threads and photography!

Thank you. I've only taken the time to master one thing despite trying to be good at all the rest. Nonetheless I'm still learning. Always learning.

I live in Damascus and my wife and I will be there Friday, I will try to find you and say hi!

Eric

I will be there all day Friday and we'll most likely still be shooting tomorrow upstairs when the show starts. The show will have over 160 bikes - way more than previous years and there's simply no way we'll finish them all so expect to see me and my studio partner from NYC, Tommy Liggett, still shooting away.

Thanks. My poor 990AWD needs some attention. I think I'd like to swap it over to FI to make it more reliable despite how much I love the FCR carbs. I'd also like to make tanks for it. Because, you know, I need another project...

And here's one of the bikes I shot and what that lighting combo looks like.

Prelighting was a very long day - I'm wiped out and we shot only 5% of the bikes we'll need to shoot tomorrow. It will be brutal.

I think that you need to try and get some more detail out of these pictures, Gregor. Not looking too sharp or mind-blowlngly incredible just yet.

Good lord.

Also, instagram hardly does these things justice. Their compression is rough on pictures of this quality.

Hi Gregor,
I have been following this thread for a couple years. You deserve a medal for saving such an awesome home. The photos in this thread are great. It's obvious that you can't halfass anything. Just started following your IG. I'm @ckoPhoto, hobby photographer, although you probably know Clint Davis who is a friend of mine. Oh yeah, and I have a 990, my wife has a Scrambler Full Throttle so the moto pictures have been much appreciated, too.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the compliments on the 1 Show photos. It was a boat load of work. We figured the show would be brutal but we greatly under estimated it. Tommy and his wife, Kristine, really killed it. We joked the night of our prelight that to actually shoot every bike we'd need to shoot a portrait, a bike shot and 6-10 details every three minutes all day with no break. Haha, who could do that?

Turned out it was us!

In the end that's actually what we did which surprised even us. We ate pizza given to us while holding the camera in the other hand. Tommy and I alternated shooting and lighting to save our backs. Ben saved our bacon when a tether cord failed and we went to our back up. He got us two more backups and a replacement slave setup when ours was dying flying downtown on his Super Duke.

I think the thing I loved most about it was how hard it was but that we actually got better as the day went. We just kept honing our light and angles. I think we're the first team to have ever finished shooting on time and we did almost twice as many bikes.

Here's some of my favorites.

Sorry, I have literally hundreds of shots - maybe a 1000 good selects? It's interesting to see them afterwards because you barely remember shooting them. We were in that "flow" state of moving lights, adjusting the camera and positioning people to try to make a single corner different for every shot. It was fun.

J is headed out of town this week and while I usually try to time that with knocking out a house project I got an ad job this week and between the shooting and retouching I'll be hard pressed to do anything but keep up.

Wow, thanks for this update and sharing your favorite pictures of the show, amazing one, love the light setup you used! I had to laugh when I read "flying downtown on his superduke" as it just the feeling I have every time I take mine..flying:bounce::thumbup:

I saw some of your shots of the One Show on social media... awesome awesome awesome job is all I can say Gregor.

Time to get my *** down to some of the bigger European shows for a chance to see stuff like this in the metal. Perhaps I should go back to the Bike Shed CC in London again. If you ever get the chance, you should visit. Even if it's just for a haircut (lol) or a sandwich.

Just EPIC Gregor. Really, really fantastic.

Thanks guys.

Last week Rev'It! started to roll out the images that we shot in November. It's a big style departure for them, and it was I think a bit hard to embrace the change, but they've made them their own. Here's a screen capture and the rest are on their site.

Hi Jim,

Thanks! After this afternoons Nashville venture my wife just rolled her eyes and said, "Seriously, we are never going to finish this house..." Which is of course true but it's important to pretend otherwise less you give up hope.

I had a really good time at the 1 Show and the same with the Rev'It! work - I feel like I'm enjoying the work that I've been doing lately and that's been keeping me pretty busy.

Anyone here live in Nashville? PM me if so - I'm about to pick up another project. I'd love a little local assistance.

Gregor

I tried to send you a PM but for some reason it doesn't show in my profile this morning. So if you didn't get it: I live in Nashville. Let me know how I can help.
