Back at it, Mrs Cat gave me a few dollars for the Man Cave. I started to put up peg board that I got from a job. I like free. With the money Ms. Cat gave me I bought 2 rolls of R-13 insulation and some peg board hangers, I already had some clearance hangers and I used them to hang some of my "great buys". I will post some pics of the peg board in a later post. Watch out Secret Santa. I am going to use the peg board for materials I use in the handyman business.

Picked up 25' of 12/2 and some connectors. going to put a 4 bulb T-8 LED "Daylight" fixture in the attic. I already have pwr and switch, just need to run 12/2 to fixture. I also picked up a couple of rolls of R-13 insulation.

Got inspired today, I wanted to put up some shelves in the man cave. I have a old 1950 PU bed that is roached, I cut down the ends and fixed them to a 2x4. I'm going to attach another 2x4 on the wall at the bottom and another in the front. I picked up a 10' deck board I'm going to cut into 8" pieces. It should look like a PU bed coming out of the wall.

Rainy, cold and nasty outside so I took the time to finish my shelves. The idea was to make it look like looking in the back of a old PU bed. I'm very happy with the size and depth. I used pipe insulation on the edges because Im a ******* and the edges were sharp (may be a ******* but not stupid!) I think when the walls get painted it's going to look bad ***. Now its beer thirty. Mike:beer:

BF - Being a Shop Teacher I know you got a chuckle. Like I said in the last post " There is something about a Sunday, its a most peculiar grey, even though I wasn't on the A1A, I was feeling tired when I got inspired, I knew it wouldn't last long and I must confess I could use some rest, but it cleans me out and then I can move on". Man the things that inspire. I was on the way home and one of my neighbors was taking down a arbor, he was throwing out 5 4x4 treated posts. I couldn't stand to see them go to the dump so I stoped and ask if I could have them, he said help yourself and into the back of the PU they went. After much thought I decided to use them as a base to a small "Green house". Not a shop or a garage but a new project none the less. I have no blueprints but just a vision and I am going to build this on the fly. So far it is 11'3.5"x 11'3.5". Its going to be a slow build because I want to do it a little at a time. Mrs. Cat is already getting the 3Bs. ready, Beer, Bandaids and Bayer. What sparked the build was Mrs. Cat put me on a diet. Last 2 months I have gone from 325lbs to 293lbs. so now Im on a "eat healthy" kick. O boy, I gotta get a beer. Mike

A lot has happened but little is obvious, I'm on a mission to reclaim my back yard. Since the last picture I have cut down a lot of brush, growth that has been growing for years. When I cut that down I noticed my fence was being held up by vines. Fixed that and went back to the green house, noticed the yard sloped toward the fence and to one corner (of course) I used some landscape bricks I had laying around and leveled the fence corner. When I cleared the yard I found 2 bags of sand  I'll use the rest of the landscape blocks to level the fence side wall. I can see it in my head, its going to be beautiful. Mrs Cat just keeps shaking her head and telling me to be careful. I think she's counting the life insurance money, jokes on her I don't have LI. Just joking she loves me. Just noticed I have a fence post leaning. (&**&&^

After a long discussion with myself I came to a agreement that I just wouldn't be happy unless I did this thing right. Better sense Mike won over cheap Mike. I poured a concrete foundation on top of that will be a 2x6 deck. My logic is that the ground isn't level and if I just used the 4x4 in time it would shift. Start with a good foundation, 1000 lb. of concrete later I have my level base. I found out that a 60 lb. bag of concrete weighs more now than a 60 lb. bag 20 years ago, who'd have thunk it. Next step is to buy the lumber and Im going to paint all sides to protect from the elements and damn carpenter bees. Never had the problem with CB's until this week and they got into my wood pile. One or two maybe but the pile had a colony of about 40-50, I didn't think they stung but these things are like hornets:wtf:. One hit me on the back of my arm and I was sore for 3 days. I waged war and now I only have seen 2, sneaky little bastards will chase you. Mrs. Cat got quite a chuckle watching me do the BEE dance.:bounce:. I'll post when I get the floor built. Mike

Going to use 2x6 for the floor joist and deck boards on top of that for the floor, this will give me good drainage. I want to come up 2' with some vinyl siding I had left over from the shop build. Screen up to the top plate and clear corrugated for the roof. top it off with a ridge vent to let the bees come in to pollinate. I want the siding to protect from the mower. I want to use 4x4s I picked up from a neighbor that was going to throw them away to make shelves. Gonna try to keep my budget between $650-$750. So far around $40 for the concrete (got some on a broke bag 50% off). Mike

July 4, HOT. Got the 9-2x6x12 for the floor $81, went on step beyond and painted them with exterior paint left over from the shop build. to protect from moisture. Not gonna lie, by the time I got the lumber, toted it home, carried it to the back yard, painted, cut to size, and placed them, I am beat. Nothing is nailed but it is a testimony of how my foundation is poured. Im happy and its beer 30. Mike

July 15, 2020 In keeping with my 'build on a budget", I picked up 10 12' deck boards that had been returned because they had rotten knots. 50% off/ $5 a board. I cleaned the knot holes and filled with MH Ready Patch. Sanded and laid them down. I know that doesn't sound like much but it got to 96f with a heat index of 108f and 60% humidity. Its hot!

Concrete- $50
2x6x12 - $81
3/8x6x12 Deck board $50
Total $181

I was first introduced to his music on a road trip in 1980.
About a 4 hour trip and all we had was the 'You had to be there" double 8-track.
I was hooked.
Only been to 2 concerts, Alpine Valley in '95 and Knoxville, Tn in '97.
Sound system was terrible at both, we actually left Alpine before the concert was over. It was physically painful to listen.
Knoxville wasn't as bad, the songs were ok, but when he would talk, it was so muddled, it was unintelligible.

I'm kinda to the point that I avoid crowds, so my concert days are pretty much behind me.

Now I just play his concert videos on the flat screen and crank up the stereo!
Not quite the same, but the beer is cheaper and there's hardly ever a line for the bathroom!

Looking forward to seeing how the garden grows.
Gonna be a year round thing or seasonal?

The whole experience is the concert, the music is the same for the most part. Its just fun to watch the Parrot heads. I have had front row center tickets in Nashville, Jimmy actually threw a pick at the wife, we are to old to go fight for a guitar pick but it was a nice gesture. When I met Mrs. Cat in 90 she was scared to go out to the crowds, when I told her she'd be alright with me I'd take care of her, we went to a concert in Dallas. I created a monster, now we rarely miss one. Could have bought a new car with the money I spent on tickets and T-shirts.

Agreed!
The parking lot before the show is the highlight.
At Alpine, we were the 6th car in.
It was awesome.
We had a Plymouth Voyager minivan that we had taken the seats out of with the plan being sleep in the parking lot after the show.
Since we left early, we ended up getting a room in the 1st motel we found.
In Knoxville, my wife's BIL, a non-drinking cop, drove.
It was awesome. I could drink all I wanted, and his ID/Badge got us great parking and the express lane out of the parking lot mess afterwards.

Given the right circumstances, driver, rooms, etc. I might try another one.
Never say never!

One of the BEST shows I got to see, Mrs. Cat got us tickets in Nashville, on the left side of the stage in a limited view, which put us right above the mixer boards and a view of backstage. we were about stage level and Buffett pointed up to us and said "I see the farmers made it" can't say he was pointing to us but we have seen enough concerts he should recognize us, we are about the same age.

Painted my Lowes buckets black last night, reason #1 I used Lowes buckets because they are blue and the color blue resists algae, #2 I sprayed them black to keep light from shining through the bucket and growing algae. Algae is a buzz kill when it comes to hydroponics it ***** the nutrients from your water and makes everything slimy. I plan to make a 12 bucket RDWC system and grow some killer veggies. So far I have my water pump, air pump, air stones, buckets, net cups, PH meters, reservoir (20 gal igloo cooler), grow lights LED T8s and one 5v blue and red strip light. Plans are to get a 600w 12v power supply and make a 8' grow light with blue, red, green and white LED strips. I want to experiment with the color spectrum and see which works best. I know different plants require different nutrients so that should be interesting. I plan on a inside grow room, outside greenhouse, and raised beds. Gotta good start and I should be ready to rock and roll next spring. Mike

Maybe I'm just backward but this is how its gone so far. Insurance co. sends me a email saying I need to clean up "debris" in my backyard or they will cancel my insurance, I email back and say the only thing that could be considered "debris" is a pile of siding that I plan to use on the house. When I built the Man Cave I got a deal on vinyl siding, a GREAT deal, enough siding to do the shop and half the house for $25, it was discontinued. Then they came back with the same thing only a different SKU woo hoo score Mike. Allstate Emails me back and says "when are you going to put the siding on? I write back and say because of the pandemic and the fact we have had 6 tropical storms come through just this year I can only get to it when things dry and I can fit it into my schedule. They send me a letter stating I had till the 23rd of Oct. to clean the debris put up the siding and paint the house. That came in on the 22nd of Sept. I made a appt to see my "new" agent a 20 something millinial and he said they took a picture from space a year ago and that was what they were going by. Then he says I need to come out and see. since then I had cleaned the porch and moved the siding. The letter they sent was very insulting stating they could cancel my insurance whenever they want, I did make the comment I would put up siding when I could and if I didnt meet Allstates High standards I would find anouther agency. Needless to say I was pisssed. Rant over point of post, I am making the house match the shop. I love my shop.

Side note: Punk insurance agent made the comment "I know people that would do it cheap".. I dont do cheap I do right, I tell him. When he came to the house he said "Ill call corp. and see if I can get you a extention, I should know something by the end of the day. Three days later he calls and says, Corp said if you use a lic. contractor they will give me a 60 extension, I say its not going to happen capt. I do remodeling, second time he tried to get me to use his guys. Hmmmmm could this be the rub? Number 2 I have been with Allstate since 97 and have paid high prem. for a $250 deductible. Hmmmm. maybe this is the rub. I think this punk is going to get 3 calls he doesn't want #1 Corp. Allstate #2 I have a attorney on retainer I have already talked with and he said "I love arguing with insurance agencies #3 BBB Call me Popeye, I takes all I can take and I can't takes no more. I'll get to Allstates high standards and cancel my home and car policies. It may cost me more but I'm not going to give this F*^K another dime. I been wanting to check out Farmers anyway.

Mike, I feel for you. I had Allstate Insurance about 56 years ago. Always paid my premiums on time and thought I was in "Good Hands." I couldn't afford comprehensive coverage but it probably didn't matter because our car was 17 years old. Liane lost control of the '47 Ford and barrel-rolled 3 times. Her passenger wasn't hurt until two days later when he and his wife decided to contact Allstate. He said he stayed home for two days because of a crook neck. I offered to pay him a week's pay ($150) but he said he would be looking for a much bigger payout. Allstate settled for $80 and tripled my premium for the next three years. If your local Mafia offers insurance I suspect you would be in equally "Good Hands."

Because we don't have a mortgage, I can set my own coverage on our homeowner and wind (hurricane) insurance. I have a $13,000 deductible on the policy because I learned how little damage can result in a licensed contractor exceeding that amount. "They don't make the cabinets you scorched above the stove anymore so your whole kitchen will have to be re-done."

When hurricane Wilma tore up our screen enclosure over the pool, the screen guy quoted $34,000 because it would all have to come down and be rebuilt to the new code. I bought the aluminum and fixed it myself for less than $300. Had it re-screened for another $900.

Best part was not having to call my insurance company. Two minutes after one calls their insurance company to report a claim, the bank calls to ask if your checking account has been compromised.

I couldn't afford comprehensive coverage but it probably didn't matter because our car was 17 years old.

Bob the enclosure looks great, when I price people I usually take the price of materials and that is my labor, unless its labor intensive. I still think my agent/crook is skimming off the top of a claim he wants me to make. For instance if that job cost me $10000 I would pay his guys and he would file a claim for $20000, he can claim there is no way but I didn't make it to 63 without seeing a lot of different ways to scam people. I made the decision a long time ago to do the right thing, thats why I stated "I don't do cheap, I do right". I think I want to do the UV greenhouse screen in my little 12x12. Where did you get yours? Mike

Mike, I bought the screen for the walls from Home Depot. Got the aluminum framing from a place in Lake Worth FL. I had a pro do the roof panels and had to go inside when they started walking across the 2x8 beams like it was a stroll in the park. Well, stroll in the park hunched over with a roller in your hand.

Thanks Bob I'll check it out. Heights don't bother me, falling doesn't bother me, its kinda fun, like flying, but that landing is a *****. My gables are 20' and I am in the process of paint and siding. I hold on a little tighter than I did in my 30s. Mrs Cat won't watch anymore she says she just waits for the scream. It usually goes like this. ahhhhhhhhhh, thump, *(&%$#%^. I've fallen off the ladder 4 times in the last 2 years, I'm getting good at it. Mike

Insurance guy is probably getting a "finders fee" from his contractor. Or the contractor may owe him money and he is trying to funnel work to him to clear his account.

Suggest you try an independent insurance agency that represents several different companies. He can shop your insurance to the different companies and get you the best deal and he is not obligated to the company he works for.

Good luck!

I agree, I think he is running multiple contractors and getting kick backs from each one, if he files a false claim he can pay his contractors in cash and they dont have to pay income tax. Home owner signs off on claim thinking thats the cost and he doesn' have to pay anything. He pockets the extra, tax free. This punk wanted me to foot the price straight to his "cheap" contractors.Something stinks about this whole thing.
