After nearly 8 years with no shop for my stuff, it's finally my turn! I've been lurking on GJ for far too long with no posts and feel I owe you all a debt of gratitude. Thank you all for the inspiration. Hopefully this will work for my introduction as well.

So before we built our current house 8 years ago I had, at our old house, two buildings. A pole barn that measured 32x38 and a three car shop that I had completely finished and kept heated. I had 9 cars and trucks that I kept in there and have had to sell all but 2 of them.

I've missed it greatly and have been trying to plan my new one since. So here's the plan: a 36x52 pole building 14'6" to the eaves. Eave wall entries of a 9x10 insulated OH door and a 12x12 non insulated OH door and a 36/80 service door and will eventually be divided so that the left half will be a heated shop for my cars and whatever and the right half will be for storage. That brings us up to about July of this past year. I drew up a site plan that puts the building just off our turn around where we used to park our camper. Next, I pulled the trigger and ordered a modified package pole barn. Permits were granted and I was very excited and my wife was nervous. I own a small construction company so my guys would do much of the heavy lifting and I would do the all of the finish work and manage it all. The package was delivered about 3 weeks later and we got to work. As it turns out I did more of the work than I planned but my guys were a fantastic help.

We excavated and augered holes on day 1. View media item 46845

Day 2 we set all the poles and began installing the girts and started on the headers.

Day 3 we set all the trusses and stabilized everything. Days 4-6 we decked the roof and got it all shingled in.

I'll try to keep this up to date once I reach today's status in posts.

I probably didn't get enough photos through construction but I'll try to get more detail as I go with the finish work. I guess it's hard to hold the camera and a hammer at the same time!

We started the concrete next. I'm planning a lift on the left side so the floor was reinforced with rebar/remesh and poured 5" thick with deeper areas for the post mounts. Them we formed up and addition to connect the barn to the driveway. My son plays hockey and he's super excited to see all the concrete trucks come in! :rocker:

The building has had a final now so I just need to get all these posts caught up! More to come.

Id like to see more pictures of around the grade 2x6.

Looks like your grade is level with your concrete.

I am building mine in the next couple of weeks and am curious as how you set grade.

How out of level was your site?

great build keep the pictures up

Did you bring any fill dirt in or pour over what you leveled?

thanks

We brought in about 30 yards of sand for fill and we also brought in enough to fill where we scraped the topsoil off. I think it ended up around 70 yards of fill sand.

The site was high in the back and right corner about 2'. We pulled that all out and used it as fill in another low area of our yard. We've got about 2 acres to play with so it worked out ok. I set the grade to be about 5" above the existing grade at the front doors. It tapers down about 10" to the existing driveway about 30' away. All the grade was set with a laser level. After the concrete was in we filled around to make it look more level and to create a bit of a swale in the back for drainage.

Thanks for the kind words!

Good looking shack!

Hey thanks!

I'm trying to get the time to get this updated to current but I can't seem find enough time.:dunno:

Anyway here is some more. After we finished up with the concrete it was time to get the building enclosed. This is the part where all my guys went back to paying jobs and I was stuck doing this on my own. Sheeting the gables with only the help of my 12 year old was some trouble. He's a great kid but not much help at 20' up. I enlisted my brothers for a day to help me finish the OSB. We also got the windows hung and the service door in.

After we had it all sheeted I fully wrapped the building and began the siding. We used a Clay double 4" from Menards. The color wasn't perfect to the house but you can't really see both at once. I also hung the doors. Still today I don't have the upper tracks on the smaller door as I'm waiting until the ceiling is in. My nephew agreed to do the siding for me as that's what he does every day. This step seemed the longest as it only moved forward on the weekends.

Here I've also started getting the electric service in. As it works out, a separate meter worked out less expensive than trenching all the way to the house. Our incoming pole happens to be right near this new building. So far I have the storage side wired with 4 single bulb fixtures and outlets around the perimeter. I plan to surface mount conduit on the shop side once the walls and ceiling are in.

Once the siding and doors were in I had my guys come back out with our gutter truck and run some new 6" seamless gutters for the front and rear.

This brings us up to about about the 1st of November. The building got a final inspection and it's all water tight. Now it's pretty cold so progress has become a crawl. The next update should include some interior shots and some of the plans to put in the interior walls and electrical.
