Sorry ladies, Single as in Garage!

Lurking for about a month now here, reading as much as I can. Kudos to Dubber for doing most of the single car garage digging for me!

Been in this house for a numbers of years (6 now) and was bought new. Our focus has been on upgrading the interior and adding some personalization to the place since builders rarely add anything resembling colour in a new build.

Well the time has come to do what *I* want to do in the garage. Here's my canvas.

IMG-20130417-01208_zps5e9bf32a.jpg

I'ts a single car, roughly 10x20 attached at both sides to my and a neighbours townhouse.

the pile of wood on the left is free bee's. i searched Kijiji for sources of scrap wood and was able to come across enough to build my own bench.

IMG-20130417-01210_zps1ede222d.jpg

I have already done some organizing, by use of recycling our old master closet. About a year ago we installed built in's into our closet and i re-purposed the old stuff for the garage one afternoon.

IMG-20130417-01209_zpsfbdf1a36.jpg

Eventually this will get replaced with cabinets.

Here's the current bench. Not much to say about it, its cheap and will be replaced by something much more functional shortly.

IMG-20130417-01212_zps9624202c.jpg

As in every small garage, floor space is at a premium. I have some plans that should increase the available space but nothing permanent can remain on ground level. Being in a town house with 2 cars already when our kids are old enough for their own vehicles the garage will have to house one of those.

So here's the plan of attack:

1. Paint. White is the likely winner here for adding "space" and light.

2. Lighting. I picked up two 4' doubler T8 Lithonia plugin fixtures from the big Orange a few weeks back. Got them for $7.50ea, just add bulbs. this should give me enough light.

3. Electrical Outlets. I'm thinking of converting the two wall fixtures to extended surface mounts and then using surface conduit to add outlets around the back and right wall.

4. Bench. I will be building a small L-shaped bench in the right rear corner. the section that comes towards the front of the garage will have a drop down for the miter saw so I can get the stand up and out of the way for day to day. Eventually upper cabinets will go above it. Stereo will remain but be relocated.

5. The closet parts will be replaced with cabinets as well. the $99 truck load event at HD is a good source for cheap cabinets.

6. Let's be honest here, these things are never complete!

Welcome Mike! Looks we have have similar dimensions, it will definitely force you to be creative. Good luck with this and I'm in to see the progress! Its nice that your entrance door is level and you don't have to deal with a few stairs protruding into your tight space. A lot of homes in my area are like that unfortunately and those few feet are critical.

First tip, while wifey is out start hiding some pieces in random storage spots throughout your house to help save yourself some room hahaha. Worked like a charm for me :)

Started working on the new bench yesterday when I had a day off work.

overall height will be about 40". The frame is set at 39" to allow space for the top. I was planning on using an old counter top from my parents kitchen reno but realized it would be more effort to make it work than its worth.

The water outlet could NOT have been installed in a worse spot, in a worse orientation!

Nothing super fancy here, just a basic ladder frame design lag bolted to the wall and the vertical 4x4's.

IMG-20130502-1244_zps28586edb.jpg

at the last second I decided to make a small L to the bench. it measures about 24"w by 16"d same height as the rest of the bench. It's 45'd on one side for a little flair and parking space.

IMG-20130502-01244_zps3acb6848.jpg

You might be able to make it out from the pictures, but the stud spacing is 24"OC and that only allowed me to LAG it in the two middle studs. I'm thinking about adding two more 4x4's to the back just for added security since I already have the lumber and everything else required to install them.

the "L" section will get a 4x4 as well since it did not fall on many studs either.

I feel a lot of your challenges. Starting with "re-purposing" free fixtures, although sometimes it works, most times it ends up just being too much to try and save and or use them. Your spigot really reminds me of mine. What a challenge that has been for me. You should see mine, I have about about an inch of room on the right side of my 32" Husky cabinet so that i can physically turn the knob, and its sandwiched between another piece that is moveable thankfully.

Great bones for the homemade bench. Intrigued to see that.

Mike, yours looks a lot like mine too. It's definitely important to keep things off the floor and out of the way when you can barely get in and out of the car. Keep posting, I'll be following this one for sure.

small update. worked on the bench a little last night during the hockey game.

dont worry, i didnt miss the game, brought the laptop to the garage and streamed it from cbc.ca

over all view, added a few vertical supports, especially at the back wall since the stud spacing didnt allow me to anchor it in as much as I would have liked. Call it cheap insurance!

IMG-20130506-01255_zpsabdc06e1.jpg

a closer view of the 45* corner. add some flare and save space for a car in the *far* future, afterall, he's only 3!!

IMG-20130506-01256_zps46a2b5d8.jpg

you can barely see one of only TWO outlets in the entire garage (not counting the GDO outlet) its far enough below where I can put a power strip on the front of the bench, back wall, or somewhere else.

plan now is to build a lower shelf portion into it, add the surface layers (thinking 3/4" MDF for top and shelf), then buy HD "truck load" uppers.

I'm looking forward to hooking up my stereo again out there!

Hey Mike, a couple ideas to float your way, one for the hose i think you can buy angled hose bib attachments, that may help you a bit to at least send the hose out another way.
My other idea is for the outlets situation, have you played with the idea of mounted an extension cord reel from the ceiling at the garage door opener outlet? I did that and it has often helped with my limited outlet situation.

the hose bib isn't a deal breaker for my. a shallow toolbox will ensure continued access. I'd like to turn it 180* though!

I was planning on the ceiling hose reel. Right now my GDO is plugged into a surge arrestor which is covering the other outlet.

i am contemplating using compression fittings to re-route my hose bib to the side of the bench.

anyone have experience with compression fittings (i cant solder, and I'm not hiring it out).

there is an internal shutoff as well for isolation in case the compression fittings fail.

I just finished a project that i couldnt solder because it was the lowest place in a system and its configuration was strange...

I used a product from Home Depot called a "shark Bite" onto a 1/2" copper and the other end is a 1/2" pipe thread. It worked really easily and is working fine. something to consider.

For my project i used a stainless flex hose fitted to the threaded end of the shark bite.

Mike,
I also have a 1 car garage in our home & It is very tight with my 69 Mustang I am restoring & my air compressor, tool box, & my woodworking power tools. I got creative & built 2 overhead storage racks out of 2x2 lumber that I cut on my table saw from several 2x10's that I had & used 3/4" pine for the floor of the storage racks from acquired (free) lumber.

Had some time to work on the garage this weekend. While I'm still thinking about how to finish out the lower part of the bench (full width shelf or 2, half width with space for toolbox, etc.) I assembled the frame for the upper shelf.

Originally i intended on putting cheap upper cabinets here, but with a large amount of left over free lumber I had to something with it, so I did!

IMG-20130526-01289_zpsf2f0001e.jpg

I used 6 12"x14" angle brackets for additional support. the ledger is lagged into studs but I wanted more vertical support. Instead of the traditional 2x4 cut at 45* i used these since they take up zero working space and provide lots of support. I did the "chin up" test and it didnt budge.

Mike how much time are you going to get to watch television in your garage? it's all I can do to listen to a little radio, let alone find space for a stereo system. Hope to see some great progress in the near future.:thumbup:

who said anything about a TV??? ;) just an old 17" LCD monitor for a laptop connection. So I can stream sports (ok, just Hockey) when I'm outside.

Not like I'll be sitting there watching it, but some background noise and a peek in here and there.

Yes sir! Now that i have one i would be hard pressed to get rid of it. Spent Saturday out detailing my cars with TSN playing in the background. I think that is some sort of bliss hahaha.

Made some small progress on the bench today. Added the first (maybe only) layer to the top.

1/2" MDF called "Handy Planks" @ Home Depot. Five 2'x4' sheets and two 2'x4' 1/4" Peg board for $60 all in. Im happy.

My parents got a new counter top/sink/faucets. An in counter soap dispenser came with the faucet they liked but didnt want to install it.

They asked if I wanted it and I knew the perfect spot!

Easy install, drill a hole and screw it all together.

Great little garage!

I recently picked up what looks like the same tool chest (bottom) off a passing scrap truck for $10, with a huge dent in the top. Hammered out the dent and it's fine. Do you know what brand it is? looks like a Crappy Tire unit or something...

Love the use of small space, tucking into corners really builds on the usable area. good job!

it's a Mastercraft unit (cdn tire). Had mine for a few years with matching top chest. Looking to upgrade if you want a second.

today (Canada Day!) :canada2: I took some spare time and organized the peg board. Its likely not in its final organizational state (are they ever?).

IMG-20130701-01412_zps49c83404.jpg

in the area behind the red extension cord I'm thinking of making some custom drawers using full length ball bearing slides.

Anyone have experience / links to such a creation? :)

some progress was made this weekend.

I installed my light fixtures!

These are 2-bulb Lithonia shop lights that I purchased from Homer Deposit for $7.50ea. Added Sylvania 6500k bulbs yesterday (had to take a pack back as one was DOA :grrr: )

These are controlled via the switch. I replaced the incandescent bulb with an outlet and plugged these suckers in.

last night i took an hour or so of spare time and installed the lighting under the shelf and over the work bench.

I was finding that the shelf was creating a shadow on the bench surface and this resolves that.
