Mill trips breakers all of a sudden.

My Mill was set up for 500rpm for steel. This weekend I swapped pulleys to speed it up to 3000rpm and now the mill shuts off just as the Rpm increases. It is a 110v unit and I’ve run it off a 15amp power strip all along. I have not tried plugging it directly into a higher 20amp outlet yet.

Any suggestions? I didn’t foresee a speed change having this outcome but I’m not that experienced . At some point I was going to wire it for 220v but wasn’t going to do it just yet. I have bigger breakers on the 220 side so is that my only option?

Do you have a clamp on amp meter? More than likely your exceeding the amp time curve on the breaker or you have a braker failing.

If you put it back to 500 rpm does it do the same thing?

Have a pic of the motor data plate?

Try a 20a ckt directly, no powerstrip. A clampon ammeter will give you the best troubleshooting info.

Are the pulleys and motor original to the equipment?

Are you running a of AC and other high draw equipment?

What voltage do you have at the outlet?

A "bigger" breaker on 240v wouldn't be needed as current cuts in half. This would easily run on a 15a 240v circuit. On 120v, it should have been on 20a circuit all along

Stop using a power strip for stuff like this. I am sure there has been some meaningful voltage drop

its a 2hp motor with a 16a FLA. this shouldve always been plugged into a 20a receptacle. what kind of plug does it have on it? should be a 5-20p.... someone may have cut the plug off and put a 5-15 on it or twisted the t blade to make it work on a 15a receptacle.

and get rid of the power strip...

If that is an overseas motor, a lot of them have very high surge currents on startup. You have also increased the load on startup with the pulley ratio change. Best solution is to run the mill on 240VAC if available.

It says it draws 16 amps at 110. You have just been lucky that it isnt tripping the breaker at the lower speed. The lower speed puts a lot less load on the motor especially at startup.
Makes perfect sense. I’ll run it directly off the 20amp GFI wall outlet for now
