Milwaukee battery hard to install and remove

I have a few tools in the M18 lineup. I have found that some of the batteries are difficult to install/remove. I have not taken the time to figure out exactly where the problems lie, but one example is an M18 Red Lithium 5.0 XC and sliding it on and off the Fan 0886-20. It does not slide on smooth. There is excess friction / interference making it difficult to remove and install.

My Fuel drill and driver both seem fine with the batteries I have. I am pretty sure my Sawzall has an issue with a couple batteries as well.

Was there a running design change to the either the batteries or the tools in the "rails" that the batteries slide on?

No, it's a fairly common issue. My M18 turbo vac (the one with the round canister) has this issue with some of my M18 batteries. I have at least 20 M18 batteries so I don't care as I'll just use one that fits that tool better. You're not going crazy I just think it's a tolerance issue.

Has anybody tried a very thin coating of silicone lubricant on the plastic sliding surfaces?

I have the same problem with the M12 inflator with a big 6.0 battery.

Goes in ok, but I need to pry it out.

Loosen a screw or two, reinsert the battery. Snug it up just enough so it removes easily.

The ones holding the tool body together nearest the battery. I have had a similar problem numerous times over the years though mostly with batteries designs that slide up into the handle, my old Makita was the worst but I have struggled with newer Milwaukee M12 in particular.


Rereading closer the fan is your major issue I see and just looking closer at mine right now I see that is molded and not centered on the case halfs like most of hand held power tools including the sawzall so my suggestion most likely wont help out there.

I have the same issue with my fan... 10 or so M18 batteries in various sizes, some are worse than others but the fan is the only tool Ive had an issue with.

I've just been ignoring it but it kinda sounds like it might be a more common issue than I thought.

I have sprayed the sliding surfaces of my M18 batteries with some silicone spray and it makes a big difference. Be aware that silicone can cause big problems if you do any sort of automotive painting or wood finishing.
