New tool released in that last couple months, and it has gone up $10 already at other retailers.
I bought one for my tow truck friend, and he loves it. Much more suited for his line of work over the M12.

$180 seems way to much but $130-140 seems reasonable when compared to the M12 offering. As the M12 is still slowly but surely working for me, I'd need the M18 to get a bit closer to $100.

Thanks. I still have yet to pull the trigger on anything M12. If this was a smoking deal (on the M18), I was ready to buy two.

Should be return all or nothing on products with a free items, like every other retailer on the planet.
They show the breakdowns of the deals on the receipts, both online and in store. They also have similar deals listed in packages as well, without breaking down the items values on receipts. As long as its been going on, and as long as its been posted online about the "hack", Im sure they know. They must still have incentive or profit in it to still be allowing it to happen.

If I'm understanding you, this would be the opposite of what we all like. When there is a promo we can return the battery or the tool for a discount on the one we want to keep. Or just keep both if we want to. Why do you want a return all or nothing? This is less flexibility. I don't understand your viewpoint here. Can you explain why you want an all or nothing promo?

Home depot doesn't pay outright for Milwaukee tools. It's all on consignment to TTI. They probably get paid monthly or quarterly so all the buy/return items all average out on the payment terms. It also drives traffic to their store and they know you will spend more so they're pretty lax on returns in general.

They really don't care unless you are excessive or doing it without receipts. At that point you can be flagged by a third party company that they subscribe to. This 3rd party can effectively ban you from doing returns to MANY stores.

I abuse the hack heavily.

Recently I bought the following. Prices are what I paid After I returned the free item (hack)

M18 Gen-2 MidTorque Friction Ring with 2x CP2.0 Batteries for $150
M12 Compact Spot Blower $55
M18 Fuel 5" Grinder w/ 5.0 Battery $82
M18 Fuel 1" SDS & M18 Fuel 5" Grinder $205
M18 Fuel Gen 3 Impact Driver + CP 3.0 Battery $129

Sold the 5.0 Battery for $60
Sold a grinder for $120
Sold the Gen 3 Impact for $100

Planning on selling my old mid-torque, and older fuel grinder and the cp2.0 batteries. I should be able to get 200-240 for that. Meaning I would spent like $100-140+tax and got a bunch of tools I wanted/needed.

Pulled the trigger on the inflator, ordered one to try it out for now. Should arrive later this week. $144 with MA tax and free shipping.

Great price on Packout. Ordered a 2-drawer last month from NAPA for $124 but had to return due to shipping damage. Notified NAPA customer service that Packouts are tough but can't tolerate drops/toss/stacked shipping damage outside of a box.

Just watched this video, and noticed that the hose doesn't seem to be externally removable (to replace with a longer one, etc.). I wonder if the chuck can be upgraded?

The ones that are hackable have the red rectangle that says - get one free battery. The ones that have a black plus/+ sign with a picture of a battery, are not hackable.

Hackable means the tool and the free battery or free tool ring up as a separately purchased item and can be returned individually for money back. You can also do the opposite and return the tool to get the battery at a reduced price.

you might want to buy the M18 air compressor. I have one and the M12 inflator and just ordered the M18 inflator .

I really like the m18 inflator. It’s faster than I expected and seems to agree with a separate gauge that I use to check pressure.

Which retailers don't do it like HD? Every time I have bought a deal with a free item they do distribute the price among the items. Same thing for coupons. Lowes, Advance, Autozone, BestBuy, etc. all do it that way. I'm really curious if you have found any retailer that does do it differently.

I’ve had the M18 inflator in addition to my two M12 inflators. With the Napa deal I’m buying another M18 inflator and will dispose of one or both of my M12 inflators. The M12 is great for bicycles, but it’s barely adequate for car tires my comparison.

Actually Lowe's did line item with zero dollars for freebies. Very surprised they did like they did for so long, actually the reason I didn't buy promos there. That has supposedly changed in the last year. (Coupons were applied to all items on a receipt proportionately, like the BOGO should have been done, so that may be what you were basing it off from them)
Best Buys system is actually ahead of everyone. If you buy a bundle there, and return part of the bundle, it will re-calculate your original purchase, and only refund even less than a pro-rated amount because the other item is now back to full price on your receipt. Either an all or nothing situation sort of.
And seeing is Home Depot is just as large of a company as Best Buy, and management that jumps from one company to the other quite often, it wouldn't be difficult for Home Depot to implement the same thing...if it really mattered.

Some would say they sell twice as many tools if everyone returns the batteries once. 😉

I have 6, 5 and 3 amp M18 batteries. In one of the inflator review videos I watched, they were running an 8 or 9 amp battery.

I'm expecting the 6 amp to handle most of my needs.

Home Depot has 2300 stores and 100+ billion in revenue each year - If it didn't make sense for them to do it the way they do it... They wouldn't do it.

It does chew through the batteries.

My reservation with the M18 inflator for mobile use would be the lack of alternative plug-in options. For home base the M12 has the same limitations but it does an adequate job topping up tires to clear the TPMS warning.

Im itching for some new Red, but not sure what I want or need lol.

Ive got some Discover cash back in PayPal, and get 5% back with Discover using PayPal, so Im trying to work out vendors that have deals and take PayPal to maximize the deal. HD does PayPal, but doesnt give option to use the existing cash back like other vendors.

I bought both the RA die grinder and the straight one. I've never used the straight one to this day. The RA die grinder is FREAKING AWESOME. I have used the absolute hell out of it to clean up mating surfaces/remove old gaskets. For 80 dollars, that things is a STEAL. If you don't work on cars at all you might not use it much but at 80 bucks, why the hell not?

Thanks.

Is this real?

M18 Fuel straight die grinder with FREE M18 3/8 impact wrench?

Seems too good to be true... Are these good tools, and is this a good vendor?

EDIT: Quick searching, seems like the impact is liked, but the die grinder gets complaints because it isn't variable speed. Can it be modified?

While I'm not one to encourage spending just based on feelings, can't you just buy what you want, pay for it with paypal using the card normaly, and then redeem your cash back as a statement credit?

Exactly what I was thinking. Maximize your cash back by paying for it normally without points/cash back. Then paying for it as a credit with your points/cash back.

Obviously with all the shoplifting they experience, corporate must believe a poor profit sale is better than a sale that walks out the door without paying anything..

Long live the Hack.

...Is this a “deal hack,” or misuse of a store’s return policy?

To be frank, it doesn’t matter to me how you see it. I’ve steered away from this topic for years, as it’s too easily abused (especially by resellers), and I didn’t want to give anyone ideas.

But given how often I am now asked about “deal hacking,” I figured it was time to post about it..

The practice has been so prevalent that Home Depot and other retailers must be clued in by now. Maybe they don’t mind as much as one would think, especially if a return brings you back to the store. But, I would guarantee they’re watching sales and returns data, as well as inventory numbers.

Should the “tool deal return hack” practice become more the norm than the exception, Home Depot could easily defeat it, by switching to more single-SKU bundles, changing the return policy, or any number of other ways...
