That's a cool 'tweener piece. Harkens back to the early detachable era, just after pressed steel, and just before hot forged, when extensions had square shanks with forged sockets with female ends press-fit or welded on the other end.

Yup, remind you of any other "press-fit" extensions?

Didn't Blackhawk run a similar line of extensions with square shanks in 3/4 drive? I think I may have a couple.

I don't believe Plomb had pressed/welded extensions.
See DE5 and DE10 on page 11 of Catalog No. 6 (1925). I don't have one, and I can't remember ever seeing a photograph of one, but the catalog sure as heck indicates they made them.

I'm not sure why they made them that way, when the sockets in their earlier 9/16-inch male square drive General Utility Set Y (Oldtuleguy has one...) had such long male square drive tangs they may as well have been extensions. All they had to do when they moved to detachable female 1/2-inch square drive was mimic the same forging process. But for some reason, they went to square shanks and press-fit sockets for the female end. (At least it sure looks that way to me. Check it out and let me know what you think.) In 1928 they were offering both the square shank/press fit style and fully forged round shank style, but by 1930 they had abandoned the square shank/press fit style altogether.

I stand corrected Greg, but I've never seen one of those anywhere but that catalog.

Square shank press-fit extensions are shown in four catalogs (1925, 1928, 1932, 1933) for 3/4-inch drive. For some reason, they held on to them longer in the Heavy Duty socket sets. They're shown in two catalogs (1925, 1928) for 1/2-inch drive. The 1932 catalog, which is the one with all the new numerical model numbers and the parenthetical notices about the old model numbers, shows rounds shanks with male and female connections forged onto the ends, listing them as "5461 (Old Part No. DE5)" and 5463 (Old Part No. DE10)" respectively. DE5 and DE10 are the square shank press-fits.

I have never seen one, either, in the wild or photos. But I've only seen a few examples of the early 'phonetic era' pieces, which are very scarce, right here on GJ, and those were a few at a time, and then Oldtuleguy's partial Y set. I'm not saying the catalogs prove they made them. But I am saying it doesn't seem likely they used that specific image that many times over the span of several years in several catalogs, then carefully noted their replacement, if they didn't make them.

(Didn't mean to break into a Plomb conversation on the MTF thread!)

A Milwaukee Tool & Forge Tappet set made for Motor Tool Specialty (Snap on) would probably date about 24-25. This set would have been ten pieces, two exact same wrenches in each slot.
Am missing a 9/16 - 5/8 and a 13/16 - 7/8. So if you have one, holler at me.

Thanks Twertsy for posting the MTF catalog. I was able to purchase a extensive box full of MTF tools this past weekend and the catalog helped identify a few that were not clearly marked. I"\'m not sure how rare the tool cabinet is listed but I bought that full with 60/70 sockets ranging from 1/4" drive to 3/4" set up to 2" with ratchets.wrenches, screw drivers and even has the valve reseating tool. Its great to see others interested in collecting tools from the past. Never posted before so not sure if this will get thru to you or not. Will post pics when I figure that out. I did post pics on Antique And Vintage Tools Society Facebook Page. Thanks again Bob K.

Holy moly, I just looked at your photos, Bob. That was quite a score finding that many MTF tools in their original Tru-Fit cabinet. And the tools apparently having been stored in their original cabinet certainly helped preserved their original condition. Coincidentally, one of our regular members here recently found the same cabinet. His was empty. I identified it as MTF, but your find clearly confirms it.

EDIT: Here is a link to a post in the GJ Toolboxes thread where you can see his MTF cabinet.

Trying to post pics for the first time of the MTF tools I was able to purchase last weekend. The tools are in the attachment. The trays they are in slide into the tool cabinet and the pic in the MTF label on top of the cabinet. Will take and post better pics if anybody is interested.

Awesome Bob. SO many questions! Are all the tools marked MTF? Are the tool rolls marked MTF? Can we get closer shots of the ratchets? What do the sockets look like? How are they marked? I can't see!

I'm still amazed that it's the same box Ed found, but with the tools.

In the meantime, slightly better views on that Facebook group Bob mentioned, linked here. Click on any pic, it zooms, and then you can scroll left and right for more.

Hopefully here are a few more pics of my new MTF collection. Glad to see others interested in them also. The 3/4" socket set are marked MTF and the extensions also say True Fit. The smaller hex ratchet doesn't have any markings except SR 12 but looks identical to the square plug ratchet that is marked FV 7 on one side and MTF on the other side. The 3/4" ratchet looks similar to a Williams 3/4" ratchet I have at work. The 3/8" breaker bar doesn't have any marking but do look like the pic from the catalog Twertsy posted. I will post more pics when I have a chance and If any show of interest.

Great score bro. Must be Milwaukee week, Twertsy's Blackhawk and now this. Besides more of the tools, I'd like to see a closeup of that Logo on the large single open end.

btw, Lugz. thanks for the facebook link.

Man, talk about struggling with your identity! MTF had to have about 15-20 different ways of marking their stuff. For such a relatively short existence, there's a ton of different markings.

Personally, I'd like to see a really clean close up of the "socket logo" on the 3/4" rat. Looks like it was stolen from, or stolen by, Blackhawk.

Twertsy I totally agree with all the different markings. Here is a few close ups of the socket logo that is on the 3/4" ratchet. Also a few close ups of the other different markings on various tools. I might even have a few more different type of marking on a few more. I seen a previous question about chiseled and punches, the ones in the pouch are marked MTF not Blue Point / Blue Points. I started out stocking up a smaller tool box at the AB Brewery where I work as a maintenance machinist and its turned into a real interesting hobby for me. I enjoy the history and stories of the company's that have came and sadly gone. Most are trying to make a cheaper product not a better product now. Ok here is some close ups.

I find the socket outline logo intriguing since Blackhawk trademarked that in 1926 I believe.

Twertsy do you have any idea the what year the ratchet was made? I have a few DBE wrenches that aren't listed in the catalog you listed. I will check the part number and what sizes it is. It must be made a couple years later. If their is anything you or anybody else wants a closer pic of let me know. Thanks Bob K.
