Twertsy do you have any idea the what year the ratchet was made? I have a few DBE wrenches that aren't listed in the catalog you listed. I will check the part number and what sizes it is. It must be made a couple years later. If their is anything you or anybody else wants a closer pic of let me know. Thanks Bob K.

I'm inclined to say later. Mine don't have the raised center where the socket mark is. Mine look more like the old depressed panel Husky, Blackhawk and Snappy. But Blackhawk trademarked that socket outline, so I'm not sure.....

I don't believe Plomb had pressed/welded extensions. For sure Husky, SO, MTF, and Blackhawk did, all whom have one thing in common..... Milwaukee

See DE5 and DE10 on page 11 of Catalog No. 6 (1925). I don't have one, and I can't remember ever seeing a photograph of one, but the catalog sure as heck indicates they made them.

Anyone ever seen MTF 3/8 drive tools? A generous member sent me this box which Lugz pointed out is obviously for 3/8 but I only have 9/32, 1/2, and 3/4 drive MTF tools. Never seen a 3/8 drive tool.

I have never seen any. Though I have only ever found 2 MTF sockets and 1 wrench in the wild before so not saying much. I think 3/8" drive was less common back in the day.
Very sweet box.

So it looks like it had an open gear flat shank (similar to the one pictured in post #74). Though the cat. and the pic don't match as far as hex and sq. drive. ( SR-12 vs. SSR-12).

That's a rare bird. I've never seen any mtf 3/8, but any 20s early 30s 3/8 can be tough to find.

Ironically, probably due to their close association with Snap-on, it's actually called the "Ferret Victory Set" in the 1930 MTF catalog (see page 33).

In fact, if it wasn't for the bit in "The Snap-on Story" (40th anniversary stockholders meeting handout) where they say the drive size was named after the animal (for its sleekness) by one of the Snap-on founders and VP's, I might think it's possible it went the other way around, with MTF giving them the name.

MTF BOARD ROOM SCENE: "Hmm, okay, those danged guys at the Motor Tools Specialty Company stole our name. If we can't have Ferret any more, what's another sleek furry ground-dwelling mammal? And nobody say 'weasel'!"

Is it safe to assume it might be worth going back to look for more if I can get them for less than a buck apiece?

I always grab them. They went away in 1932 and I love old Milwaukee made tools.

While taking advantage of time away from work Zoom calls, I started cleaning up my so called office / library at home. I got most of my Woodworking and tool books in order, found almost 2 boxes of duplicates or things that have been replaced with digital copies, and can see half my floor again. In the last throes of this, I found a stack of small pamphlet type catalogs which have not been chronicled, so no idea what is in here. They are all originals, no reprints.



Anyway, the only reason this thread cares is that the top of the stack was a Milwaukee Tool and Forge catalog, pocket sized, and apparently from the 1925-1932 range. It is larger at 44 pages than the 2 at archive.org, and has about 2x as many distributors. And showing a Milwaukee address, so pre merger.

I'll have to work with someone to get this into the archive.org library. Here is a bit of a teaser. If anyone needs anything specific in the short term, holler and I can take more pictures.

This Milwaukee Tool & Forge wrench turned up in sorting my box of old wrenches. I like the detailed manufacturer logo, and the size markings are especially interesting in that they use the USS and SAE designations which relate back to the bolt sizes instead of the actual nut size. Thanks to Twerlsy's 1929-30 catalog posting, I see this would be their "W4" wrench. Some pictures of MTF wrenches show them using the common standard of jaw width size markings, any idea when they stopped using USS and SAE ?
The only other USA wrench I have with size marks relating to the bolt size is an old Armstrong, which also uses the USS bolt size to reference the wrench opening for the appropriate nut. I assume this is also an early ( pre WWII ?) wrench
