My girlfriend is having a 16x28 outbuilding put up, stick built, spray foam insulated.

She wants to have a dual zone Mitsubishi Mr Slim installed. Seems this unit sells online for around $2700 with a line set.

Estimates are coming in between 5500-8500 for the unit and install.

Electrical will be done before they arrive. Seems like crazy money to me or am I missing something?

Thanks.

Dang man, Have you not read through any of the many mini-split threads here? Tons of stuff on likes, dislikes, pricing, DIY and pro installs.

Yes, I searched "install cost" but no I did not read every thread in this forum. The one relevant thread I found was from 07. If pricing has remained the same since then I can just delete this thread.

check rebates.
Here you get a 750 and a 500 rebate on the mitsu. hyper heat.
Single zone systems run cheaper.
Even if you did 2 separate condensers. The equipment is cheaper.

I would except I'm told it needs to be done by someone certified in order to keep warranty and pass inspection.

To get the 10yr warranty it would need to be installed by a certified HVAC tech (a nice tech would do a 'start-up' and mark it as an install on the invoice). If installed by a Mitsubishi Diamond dealer you get a 12yr warranty. Self install = no warranty. However, usually you can buy two units for the price of one professionally installed so the warranty becomes more of a moot point. Inspection should have nothing to do with who installs it, you either pass the inspection or you don't.

I installed mine myself last summer. Purchased everything through ecomfort.com (they even figured out what size unit to buy). I paid a qualified Mitubishi contractor to come out to "start it up" (pressure test, evac, check it over, etc) to maintain the warranty - I had done everything else myself - flared the lines, ran the electric etc. I think I paid around $300 for the service call and had another $200 or so in the tools that I needed

Call ecomfort - they should be able to give you 3 contractors in your area to talk to

Thanks for the info guys! That's what I had been discussing with my GF. Even with no warranty she could buy another complete unit, have it on the shelf for a spare and still be into it for less money.

I appreciate the generous offer! I've made that trip and it's not a fun one so I wouldn't ask it of anyone. :)

As has been said, two separate units are usually cheaper than a dual head system. Is the outbuilding divided into two rooms? I installed a single zone mini split in my 24x25 garage, and one head is fine.

That is crazy expensive for the install... $2800 for labor at the least, probably more because the contractor is going to get much better pricing on the equipment than anywhere you can buy it online.

If you want to try to maintain the warranty, and save a bunch of money, you can do everything yourself except flare the lines, hook them up, vacuum and start up the system. Just get everything mounted, wired, and the line set ran with a little extra on the ends so a contractor can cut the ends and flare them.

I found the math was the same as you mentioned, you could buy a spare for what people quote to install these things. I've installed a couple of them myself, and the money saved more than paid for a nice vacuum pump off craigslist, a bluvac micron gauge, flare tool kit, and an appion core remover/vacuum tee/ball valve tool. I know contractors have to eat, but I'd rather save a bit of cash and end up with a bunch of tools.

This is exactly what I did only my guy only charged me $100. My friend had all the tools I needed to install the line sets.
