Miter gauge for table saw

I need to make some angled cuts on my table saw (moulding, etc). Can anyone recommend a miter guage that'll work with my Ryobi table saw?

It's the Ryobi RTS10G if that helps. Looks like it came with a miter guage but I bought it second hand.

If you have a table saw sled, you can make simple wooden miter blocks and clamp them to the fence of the sled.

a saw sled isn't something you would buy. You build it, and it's all straight cuts.

You need to know how wide your miter gage slot is, and whether it's straight or a T slot. Then you can pick from what fits your table.

You want my recommendation, it depends what you want to spend. The Incra 27 is probably fine for most people. The 1000 I have used in the past and it is amazing. But it's probably overkill for you if you have a Ryobi saw.

What happened to the gage that was supposed to come with your saw?

Gauge was lost by original owner. I can buy a replacement on Amazon for $20. A lot of reviewers are complaining about the slop.

I think the slots are t-slots. See pics.

I'll find my calipers and take some measurements.

I'll google making sleds.

The first job I need to do is this.

I need to cut 2x blocking for my new bathroom subfloor. All my joists run at 45 degrees to the bathroom.

For added support around the perimeter of the bathroom, I was going to cut 45 degree angled studs and angle screw them into the joists.

Actually, with a good quality miter gage, table saws give very accurate miters. You might look at Incra gages, they are very accurate.

To be honest I rarely ever use it to do anything with and very seldom do any crosscuts or miters on the saw

I have an older (blue) Ryobi 10" chop box miter saw and a portable 7-1/2" Craftsman radial arm saw with a 10" stroke and 45 degree bevel for that stuff

I mostly use the saw for ripping.

And I have been very satisfied how that little saw works for me on my jobs. I also have an older Craftsman 10" similar in size and the Ryobi is just a much better saw all the way around. Takes it like a champ!

Powerful motor and cuts quite accurately. Just have to make sure the fence tension is adjusted so locks down good and tight.

As for the miter gauge...actually the bar tracks fine, and fits tight in it slot. Its the plastic crosspiece that is flimsy though and you really need to make a longer fence for it for sure, I never did.

You certainly can do a lot with table saw alone though. Years ago there was great book around Table Saw Handbook or something like that. I had a copy of it once but let someone borrow it and I never saw it again.

My t track measures 5/8 on the top and 7/8 on the bottom. Depth is 1/4.

Calipers show 21/32 on the top and 7/8 on the bottom.

so any gauge that has a bar 5/8 wide and 1/4 tall should do it. If you're going to spend any money at all, I would go better than OEM.

The Incra could be seen as overkill sure. but then again there must be a reason a lot of people feel miter gauges on table saws are inaccurate; many OEM gages are sloppy.

Yeah, the Incra locks at exact angles and also has a stop that lets you cut duplicates quickly. It's a fantastic tool.

I don't believe Incra makes a miter gauge for a 5/8" wide slot. They do make one odd size for the Shopsmith, but it will only fit a Shopsmith, and I believe all their others are for a standard 3/4 wide by 3/8 deep slot.

OP is making 45 degree cuts for blocking under a subfloor. There's no need for an Incra miter gauge for this application.

A circular saw tilted on its shoe is the tool for the job if you don't have an actual miter saw.

Actually, with a good quality miter gage, table saws give very accurate miters. You might look at Incra gages, they are very accurate.

Not on the saw the OP has. Did you look at the miter slots?

For that job, you can simply draw a 45 on the 2 x 2 and cut it off with the table saw, holding the wood by hand. Pretty much framing carpentry. I've done it thousands of times.

I also have an Incra and they are as accurate as any tool I've used for cutting angles. But they are pricey and for this particular task, overkill unless you'll have other uses for it later.

You want a miter saw to cut trim in the bathroom, not a table saw. If you don't have one and this is one-time project just get a cheap miter box.

If you can find a 5/8" miter gauge replacement for your saw for a reasonable price (good luck with that. A quick google makes them seem very hard to come by) then by all means I'd do that, but really you can do all you want by building a crosscut / miter sled for your saw, which really anyone with a table saw should have. It's not a hard project to make.

If you have one that fits it's definitely his lucky day. Google shows many forum posts on various forums from people who have searched for a 5/8 replacement for their Ryobi and Craftsman (and other brand) saws only to come up empty.

edit: The OP says he has a Ryobi RTS10G, so i thought I'd found something for it when I did run across this:

I am giving approximations of these numbers.

I have a friend of mine that has a Jet table saw that had a sloppy miter bar. He drilled and tapped the bar for set screws. He was able to take all the slop out of the bar.

HD online offers the saw without a stand too. That part# is listed as RTS10NS

I have to say that blade guard is one funky setup

And I wondered if you did have it.

The pusher stick and the lock pins on the side of the table mounting is great feature. Keeps it right close at hand for when you need it.

I went up the work barn today and took some photos of the Ryobi RTS10 miter gauge I have. I dug up my old craftsman one too and did notice the fence piece on that one is made from cast metal and is not plastic.
