Just added two more shelves to the brick wood wrights shop. Shelves themselves are made from Pecan left over from the other half of the board I used for the kayak paddle. Red Oak trims the face rounded like the drawers. One has a lip and the other does not. Everything stained and varnished to match the bench. I am almost finished building a shaving horse I designed to work with my bench and my particular needs and conditions in this small shop. It works very well and fits in storage nicely. Previews to come soon.

BB: that little woodshop just keeps looking better and better every time you add another piece of wood in there to hold more of your cool tools. the wood shines so nicely are you just putting on one coat of varnish after the stain dries or a few?

the shaving horse sounds nice. speaking of that what do you sit on in there or do you limit your time in there and just stand?

hope you and your family are able to avoid this Corona 19 and sending prayers your community survives it too.

not sure what to tell you about seeing or not seeing posts, but maybe it was something that was on GJ's end and it's fixed now.

cheers.

Thanks drives. I just put one coat on all but the bench top which has two coats. I now have a seat as it was the best way to design a shaving horse that would not be rough on my back. Most of them (called ponies) are used on top of the bench and clamped or pinned. I have no dog clamps yet and my little shop does not allow me the room to shave if I try to mount one on top of the bench. Sooooo, I had to design my own. It slides in a rack I made utilizing the block you saw previously which keeps the long boards from sagging down. It also pins with a dowel and block assembly I attached to the underside of my bench. This allows me to mount or dismount it in less than 30 seconds without clamps. I will post pictures complete with samples of draw and shaving knife work done on the finished product. It folds and stores in a corner out of the way. I have not yet tried to store overhead as who knows what will become of that space. My old gas burner to cook on and a good book I could live in here. Time for breakfast.
The block in the vise is turned 90 degrees to pin to the side also in order to hang the front.

Thanks Bill. I could but I have a small stoop about a foot wide just outside and to go up then down the step while opening the door carrying something could create a problem with the nine screws and steel plate I have in my ankle. It does mostly stay up against the wall though. Bobby

Notice the intense concentration. I have to plane with my mouth open or I end up with a whopper of a headache due to an old injury. Isn't it attractive?
This is scheduled to become two matching lamps after a spin on the lathe. If the wood permits it that is.

thanks drives the wood is cedar and cuts very nicely and fast. One lamp is roughed out already but I need to build rollers on the mill as I have a huge log on it right now.
Here are some pictures of the horse stored and folded.

This log is 22 inches dia. average with a heavy bulge on the outside. Later on how that threw another problem into the mix. These pictures depict my solution to the problem of moving large logs onto the mill saving much time and much A_ _. As you can see the log is mostly on the mill. When I made the cant it was toward me as there is not enough room to cant away on something this large. As I placed the cant onto the rollers this left it completely off the carriage and on the rollers (planned). As soon as it touched them, with a bump as it made a landing it rolled and slid (on the dish washing liquid I had placed onto the carriage surface) to within 6 inches of the dogs. SWEET. The picture of me trying to shoulder it is after the skid/roll. No dice. With the help of the dish soap and a cant hook she was landed the rest of the way.

BB,

Have you thought about getting a job? It looks like you could use the rest!

Thanks Bill. Got a chuckle out of your comment. We sure needed one. The work keeps our mind off things not singing, chirping, or flowering. Now that we can't climb the trees and smell the beauty, perhaps we can bring to life that which would have gone unnoticed in its decay.
I do not cut/kill trees to use as projects. Everything burned, carved, milled, or turned has been made from hurricane damage or felled by others for other purposes and was destined to be used as landfill. Just thought some would like to know.

BB: nice to know you are just taking wood off the land that has already hit the ground or is in the way of a new home or garage.

I agree that looked like a lot of work getting that big log up on your carriage. so were you able to run it thru the saw a few times yet?

just curious since you have a nice piece of property do you grow some of your own food or is a greenhouse in your future plans?

keep on moving cause it's what we do and stay safe.

BB: sorry to hear your A button on your computer isn't working. not sure what the fix is and i saw you asked Bob, but maybe this is a better question for Vieux our Russian friend who might just be able to fix anything.

that said our imported computer and parts were just not made to last long and it might be time to invest in a new laptop. I'm on my 3rd laptop since joining GJ and 2 crashed probably cause of Windows 10, but maybe a virus or just cheap junk.

good luck and hope you get your mill back running good again.

Ditto. I've got you beat Drives. I'm on my 4th since I joined. I do have 2 that I won't use online. One is for the business. The other is for doing alignments. It seems the ones that have crashed are the ones I used online.

Bobby, I do like the intense look on your face working on that behemoth log. Do you think ( if were not still locked down) you'll still be coming this way later this summer?

Dan I do plan to go north this summer. If things were normal I would go now also just to see that my family and friends are well. Keep in touch I plan to visit Maine. I had planned to go and visit Andy and Don Long but the virus nixed that. Stay well. P.S. I am typing the A with the on screen pad. The rest with my keypad.

Bob this log as it sits is 16 inches square. Original log 22 dia. Final ready for cutting 13 in. sq. yielding 10_1-1/8 by 13 inch White Oak many with flecks from being quarter sawn. I would like someday to build a bookcase eight feet high using the top of the old oak roll top deck (bottom used for workbench) for desk set right in the middle. I do have something else in the wind but have not committed to it yet so mums the word for now. Stay tuned. Stay safe.

BB: Quarter sawn 13 inch wide white oak boards drying slowly in your lumber room sounds like a few bruises were worth it. looks great from my chair.

I bet that wood goes slow and steady thru your saw and i bet the smell is amazing.

we won't mention a cool project you mentioned building (much) these next years cause you might just want to build something different with all your Saturdays you've got coming.

good news is a ton of people are surviving Corona even old guys like us, so hopefully as much as you move around it will avoid you and your loved ones.

trips planned can be extended and you and Andy and others can get back on the road again.

cheers and enjoy your rest day!!

drives thanks. Good news is that we can take this time to comfort one another and come together in unselfish concern for our friends. The wood does smell wonderful and I hope to work it into something grand one day. For now, to have something positive to focus on is a blessing I hope will inspire others not to give up hope. In many ways old can, and must, give birth to new. The young's losses will be far greater than that of the old should we fail. Their real inheritance will pass with us. Little of value will be left to behold.

additional pictures from the mill. I spent yesterday making the hen house more secure for the little pullets. We lost one to a snake the day before.

after everything that was done to remedy the problem of carriage return I now have a carriage that returns so fast my hand resting on the stick, if I am not careful, could send it off of the track. below is my solution valve springs welded to the brackets I made to close my hay ring when I had cattle. Ten minutes work and no money. I love it when a plan comes together.

BB: that's the old GET R DONE job that all of us love and RED GREEN would have duct taped it.

I can smell the oak sawdust now from my chair and it's mighty nice.

Great inspiration, Sir! Well done. I wish I were able to be able to witness the process first hand. To think that so many, not that long ago had to live and work this way in their daily lives to survive is quite remarkable.

y'sguy I used to buy wood from the mill when I was young to some degree just to watch it work. Never let me get too close but I was fascinated by the process and still am. Not so much tech. but a whole lot of basic principals and applied rules turning something, with no more ambition than a fence post, into a functioning piece of natural beauty. Maybe we should raise children this way? Could be strong roots build wood with character, purpose, and standards? OSB has its uses but needs structure and protection to perform. Standard ? X ?framing is not what it appears to be either. Manufacturers take pride in products made with REAL WOOD. Maybe what we miss is the pride we derive from having a hand in directing our destiny, reestablishing our heritage? Promise, is evident in those who can be inspired. I am honored. I am at peace. Thank You!

Heard a ruckus behind me while watching the tube after supper. I tried to scare him off my screen tapping the window but he appeared to be stuck. Grabbed my little camera and went out to try and get him down but no dice. As I was cutting a branch to give him a ladder he jumped to my feet then scrambled up a tree.

My swimming pool/fish pond has had the large turtle in it for years. We never knew if it was male or female. We do now. Baby is about the size of half a dollar. Cutting the last of the white oak and moving some belts that are now cataloged by size so I can use them on something else. Most of the lawn mowers they go on are obsolete.

Bobby, this is very cool but it means your fish pond has had two turtles in it. It's possible your female was on Tinder or some other dating site and invited a total stranger to stop by for a quickie!
