I do not plan to sell wood only to set up the farm/plantation I have always dreamed of when I was raising a family and we had to eat kraft dinner and hot dogs 4 days a week for 2 years in the early seventies. Back then I would have given my eye teeth just to have a log splitter. Now I split them by hand to keep the joints lubricated. I laid a few blocks Friday and dug a hole to catch sawdust. My wife thinks I am crazy because I plan to pull four back out because they are not perfectly level and will not be seen under the mill. What can I say? I will see the guy that has the drill index collection on Saturday. If you have some wants PM me I have a pretty good idea of what he has left. His collection belonged to an old engineer and is quite extensive. Bobby

Finally got the grading close to done and the digging; at least on the mill. I am starting to rebuild the carriage and track foundation. Stanchions are just placed in the general place where they will sit, provided I didn't screw up the location, for now to let me know they are finished. The hole is for the sawdust to collect; sort of a sump. Went to bed with a migraine last night. Probably too much organization/thinking for my tired brain; or maybe I just need a rest. I PLAN to take one today.

Do you plan to install a sawdust extraction system? Old flat ag chain with flat plates every fourth link, set on an angle really drags it out and creates a chute as it piles up the sawdust. I'm sure you've seen those.

You've got a very superior foundation. Once you get the rails square and level you should be in business for many years. I may have to pop over and saw some with you.

I'd like a couple of the drill indexes to use if they're not too high priced. Using antiques honors them.

BB: did you mention that you are going to pull out a couple of those new cement bases you poured cause they weren't level? If that is the case i wish you the best cause you probably already decided you don't want shims under your new (old) mill.

sorry to hear you have a migrane. i tend to get a stuffed up head (probably not a migrane like my mom and mother in law and you have but painful all the same) when working around dusty dirty stuff all day and I try to wear a mask now and that helps. did you wear a mask when moving all that dirt around?

sounds like you might have had some fun looking at some cool old tools and stuff and hope you found something to bring home for yourself.

keep up the great work on the mill installation and I for one and enjoying all the progress you've made so far.

Andy I'll have to check out the chain system. Maybe I can adapt to the power plant. I am supposed to get an insulation blower from the same guy but probably will not use it as they are noisy. Thanks drives. I should have worn a mask but believe in this case that my body needs to know what is should be immune to. I did not say I would remove any pads only that I am not perfect and could have screwed up. I am lookin good so far keep you posted.

Thanks Steve. The rest was wonderful. I did move the fifteen foot double 2x12's as I need to keep them dry and rain is coming. I laid them next to the pads and things look good. Managed to get some time to use my antique spoke shaves on the hatched handle I made and they work great. They came from Sheffield. I will have more pictures of this stuff but get wrapped up in the doing and don't get around to the pictures until it is too dark to take them. Ginny does most of that. Bobby

Thanks drives. I always post from a computer and take pictures with the same camera. Appears that either GJ or my server will only take one pic at a time. Not a big deal.

Go Ginny go! It is a wooden foundation, after all, and will swell and shrink with the weather. I think your 0.002" tolerance is overkill. 1/64" should get it.

Set up right it will be smooth and sweet with straight cuts and no binding. I want to come help so bad.

You know you are welcome Andy. Not trying to throw salt in the wounds but I plan to park the AA dump truck behind the carriage just to get the Walton's effect when ever it is running. Should be enough room to clear the angle brace

BB: i hope your helper (or Supervisor) Ginny approves of the engineer's (you) work when it's done and working as i hope you approve and love it too.

I think i figured out the picture posting thing or at least i had a similar issue downloading pics cause when i tried to post more than 3 at a time the server gave a security token error. so now i post one or two and download then do the same to get the 7 max pics per post if I have that many. i'm hoping GJ's owners figure that glitch out before too long, but they did just change servers to get a lot more memory so hopefully we can download pics directly to GJ and they will stay here forever and not have to deal with Photobucket or other online hosting sites that want to charge unfair prices and turn a good thread with a ton of pictures to just words overnight.

anyway hope that helps cause I love looking at you pictures of the cool stuff you make and do. did you find any more cool stuff at your friend's or client's shop that has all the cool old drill indexes and probably other stuff?

Foundation is finished except for the 2x4 rail bed which cannot be installed until the mill is mounted. More pictures will follow as I can only get one at a time to upload.

Started the mill installation (one pulley) than got a call to help a friend rebuild a Model A Inserted engine off sight. I will be on sight today hopefully not for the whole day. Between that and planting I suspect it will be slow going.

Got the carriage return assembly in and the mandrel is in position.

Handle is installed but not in position as the belt is not in place. Check out the DeWalt impact screw driver. It was a gift. This little tool is a sweetheart. I purchased a right angle attachment a while back with a flex cable that has been sitting for over a year in the package. I couldn't get the impact driver in to install the drum assy. and a ratchet does not do it with carriage bolts that are being reinstalled. The angle tool (also DeWalt and impact ready) did the job nicely.

drives no miss everything is dead on. The braces are factory equipment used to reinforce the foundation like a bridge to keep it from wobbling.

How did you go with the Model A engine?

Thanks Steve. The engine was a bear. To start width it had to be sent back to the machine shop as the weld on the counter weight in the rear was hitting the rear main bearing cap. Once we got it torqued and the cam shaft in started putting in the modern valves/keepers. New valve springs would not compress enough to get the keepers on. The guy I was helping had three different spring compressors none of which would do the job. I finally convinced him to let me go home and get mine. After 1 1/2 hrs trying to get one in I was able with the right tool get them all in in less time. When I left the last head bolt helicoil was being removed and replaced.

Andy it has been perfect weather here and we have a model a picnic tomorrow that I have to prepare for later today. I would rather be working on the mill. Should be finished staining it today and will get some pics out. After that I need to get 2/4's to bed the track and paint it. Once the carriage is together and on the track I plan to move the AA in and start on the long bench to build the kayak. Plan to save the power plant for the mill until the colder weather and work inside this winter. I will finish the caboose on the pole shed though before I get to the boat. That shouldn't take long. I may even set the posts next week.

Steve that wasn't the half of it. I spoke with my friend last night and he said he had to modify the oil sump pan to accommodate the counterweights. I tried to explain that when we first got into the engine but apparently I failed.
