BB: you fooled me cause I not only thought you were coming out with a overhang to cover the end of your mill I thought you'd do it the full height and width too.

that method you chose to give your mill some extra roof to cover it's end looks like it will work nicely. WELL DONE!!

do you have a picture of the INSERTS you and Andy are talking about? i'm guessing since some are missing maybe they break and/or do they fly off while the saw is cutting your logs?

keep up the good work and hope you have a relaxing fun day in your Mustang at the car showing.

Thanks Andy. The saw has all new inserts and has been hammered for 600 RPM on the bell. I have half a dozen extra right now and have called some suppliers but getting them to call back is the trick.

Thanks Steve. Took a break yesterday and today to get rest and some paint for the roof panels. Install tomorrow or at least cut and paint.
Car show was nice 72F with a breeze. I didn't even care about awards just watching the people, especially the younger kids, taking pictures with their phones. Who would have thought we would get to be cool just by having a life outside the box? Must have been from all those cereal and cracker jack boxes we emptied just for the sheer joy of discovering what was inside!

Took some time to make a (shelf) to hang enough hand tools to have a bench again. I had been contemplating for some time how to install something to keep tools on inside a grain bin. I have only three bolt studs spaced three feet apart protruding through the nuts on seem bolts that hold the panels together. Drilling and such presents structural and water tightness problems. Hanging saws was another problem, not to mention my gouges and chisels. Below is a picture of my solution. I had a three inch thick piece of red oak that split off of a plank I had cut for a mantel. Everything was drilled by hand. The hangers are made from 1 1/4 x 3/16 flat bar

Can you solder to that galvanized steel? Grain bins I'm used to are heavy enough to weld to.

Thanks Andy. They work well also.
You can galvanize takes well to solder. Problem with something of this size is the heat sink. Bin is a Butler. You may have seen them out west; pretty heavy gage.

Thanks Steve. I got tired of not knowing just what chisels/gouges I even had to select from as they were stored away for protection. Many jobs do not warrant the trouble to dig out the better/nicer tools then carefully put them away. I wanted access and protection; not to mention a dash if inspiration.

Thanks Steve. Got to build something to protect myself and others from the saw next. Have it about 90 % built inside my head but have to make some measurements to see what I need that can't be gotten from the stash pile. (scrap is a word we don't use much.)

Bobby, I am beyond impressed. It isn't even my project but I'm getting anxious to see sawdust fly. I was going to suggest ordering a re-manufactured engine but the L6 is the same price as a V8. Hmmm, have you considered a 302 with open headers?

are you limiting your self to 8 or 10 foot logs or if you might have longer ones can you just load them in on the end?

Shed looks really good. Looking forward to watching you saw up some trees. Glad to hear about the protection. I enjoy watching them cut logs at the Pawnee Steam show but have always cringed when I watch them working around the large saw blade that was somewhat exposed.

Yeah I wish I had some of it.

Ramp is pitched angle and any rain that may get inside will immediately drain. Plus, box is 3/8 thick could hold a logging truck!

Thanks Bob. I'm anxious too. Lots of maintainance and repair to accomplish first. I also need to get the dump truck moved over and finish the safety features. The wife is also wondering when i'm going to start building the kayak I bought wood for over a year ago.

Thanks Drives. I can load a 14 foot log. Only limit is diameter roughly 20 inches.

Thanks Dwight. I've done some dangerous things in my life but have no desire to be maimed. Acne at fourteen was enough disfigurement for me. Years of being around a table saw is enough demonstration of what can happen when wood gets thrown by a saw only 8 inches in dia. This one is 40.

Fence brackets I made in my BS for saw blade guard. 5/4 board will slide in them protection from the front. Second picture is side guard bracket which will bolt to the mill and receive the end of one slide board. Made this from 3/16 angle iron one piece no welding or heat cold bend using a vise and hammer.

just curious do you spray silicone or anything on the blade while it's cutting logs or is that all part of the learning process.

also since you put this up pretty quickly have you ever built a mill before or cut logs maybe at a mill or a friend's cause yours is looking very nice compared to some i've seen in person?

Thanks drives. I have never operated a mill while a log was on it. I have run the carriage a few times and loaded logs. I have also seen a few operate over the years. I don't remember ever seeing the saw sprayed and as far as the vise it's just average five or six inch. Key is to start the bend with round bar to get it going then hammer. Of course you have to notch out one leg of the angle iron first.

Thanks Andy. I'm liking the progress on your casting operation too. On the roof of the barn yesterday painting and sanding with Ginny. The wind was so strong it blew the ladder down and we didn't even hear it. Lucky a friend stopped by to check the progress on the mill. He's almost ninety and he put it back up. It's a twenty foot extension ladder. There's hope for us yet.

Nice tool hangers. I have mine hung on the side of a block building with a shed roof off the side over them. Than was a mistake. So much junk has collected I can't get at the hooks anymore! Only zombie I've seen so far was in my bathroom this morning looking back at me. Still haven't figured out how he got in the medicine cabinet? Thanks for stopping in Dyzel83

The blade will throw a little stuff, especially exiting the log, all the time, just like a table saw. That guard will really screen out the bigger stuff.

It would be funnier had it not been true.

I guess you could have dropped down off your extension roof. Might be a good idea to get something parked under the end before you pull that trick again.

On second thought, Ginny probably will take care of future contingencies. I can imagine her embarrassment at being stuck on a roof with you...

Don when I was a boy in never got to go to Disneyland and that is a sad commentary for a child with creative leanings. By the time I got there, the luster had worn off my childhood imagination.
