Bobby looking forward to seeing your holder.
You are right in saying a pile of scrap and offcuts is always handy.

Steve before I show you my blade holder (which I may modify if needed after use) I promise you I will blast and prime it. I warn you it is a little unkempt (like me).

Just Dropped in to wish you a very Merry Christmas
and thank you for your friendship this past year

Don

Don, as you know, I'm sure, quality is rare today and must be preserved. I believe the Master Builder has inspired this site (GJ) to do just exactly that! Thanking all for your friendships and wishing you a Merry Christmas.

If you work with your heart in your hands, a smile will always peer out through the rust bloom and wear. Long after the finish has worn, quality will still be visible in what was once spit and polish; and your friends will forever be with you!
GW

Merry Christmas!! Looking good as usual. I'm sure needing to make a blade holder.

Merry Christmas to you and yours Andy. I put it off for a time. Couldn't bring myself to spend the price on a sine plate large enough. I am looking forward to finishing up the other one and seeing what that beast will cut like with blades sharper than a dull knife. :bounce:

Got the other blade ground yesterday for the big thickness planer. I ran a piece of Magnolia through it that was full of knots and pie shaped along one edge. After several passes, and many nice perfectly formed curls, all edges are 3/4 and parallel. :)

BB: i'm sure i'll probably want to upgrade my planer once I start working on my little pile of cedar cause I only have a 13 inch Dewalt with a couple new blades.

WOW that is some blade for a planer and not sure i've seen any pics of your planer, but if you can take and post a few that would be nice. nice work sharpening the blade and sounds like it worked like you hoped it would.

speaking of sharp how sharp is the blade or carbide tips on your mill's huge blade? do you have to hand sharpen those?

Cedar: if you go in your GJ settings you can set up your posts per page view to 100 which really helps if you are reading long threads cause BB's thread here is almost 2500 posts now. good luck and it's a good read that is for certain.

Thanks drives. I do have a post with pictures of the sawmill planer. I couldn't tell you where to look; somewhere in the middle I would guess. I do sharpen the sawmill blade with a file but plan to make a bolt on homemade grinder setup if I live long enough. Next project, interlaced with upkeep of the house, yard, etc. is building a gas fired forge. I just have no time for messing with coal/coke.

Bobby, I was going to ask how you made those nice bends -- then I saw the seam in the window. How big a square/rectangular tube is that? It's a brilliant design.

Thanks Bob. It is an 8x8 box tubing Have the doors cut out and Tractor Supply has weld on hinges without holes to place them. Pictures of that tomorrow once they are welded on. I have plans to build a detachable tool holder also for the long stuff. Might be a few weeks before I order in the burners (special design cheaper to order than build by the time I buy the fittings.)

BB: you are so handy that I bet if you don't find an ANVIL under somebody's bench or barn that you could weld one together made of old fork lift forks or other old steel.

best of luck with the new forge and looks like you are off to a good start already.

drives you are too kind. I do have an anvil/in progress. I drove five hours one way to a friend's machine shop to get a forklift weight he had. It is 2 1/2 inches thick and 16 X 24 inches. I have to grind some trash off of the top where the seat was mounted but the bottom is smooth and flat. Weighs over 300 lbs no doubt. I have already started making a pedestal for it as I need more flat bar to finish the forge (to order next week) Below is the forge so far.

Interim project to build a stand/base for my 300 lb sawyers anvil. I started with an oak block I had saved for a follow up chopping block. It was shorter than I needed and had some issues so I decided to build it to specs; and do so at junk pile prices. This is the start of the leveling process as it will sit on a cement slab and need to be as precise as the sawmill bed (the bed will serve to balance the outer saw blade overhang). I will post pictures as I go along to show the total design progression.

Bobby your forge is looking great.

That is one nice piece of timber for the stand..

thanks Steve. I still have a way to go with both. Had a neighbor stop by Saturday to see the mill. He has a large bandsaw mill and was fascinated by the simplicity of the one man circular mill. I believe he will be looking for one. He also has a planer like mine only twenty inch wide. We may make a trade in the future for something I don't need anymore; although I don't really need another planer either!

Bobby, let me get this straight. You are now only acquiring things you need? Have you made an appointment with your doctor? :scared:

I had to laugh at Bob's comment.
As one of my new years resolutions (not buying any new projects this year)
and then went over to a friends home after receiving a call asking me if I'm interested in buying some of his stuff.
Spent $3,500 on stuff I don't need and have made 2 trips so far and still need to make one more to get all the unneeded stuff home.

Andy bring on the Kleenex as she is still crying (laughing).

Don, if you were a priest you would be my confessor. I am sure absolution would not be a problem, because you could see me as a humble soul just trying to live a simple life among the vestiges of what was left of my ancient wanderings here on earth! (No Imogene available for this level of hyperbole!)

Thought I would show what I have been doing while waiting for the weather to clear. I have a friend and neighbor that I promised to provide a copy of my manuscript so she could read it. She is approaching 100 years old and I didn't want to wait until a publisher could be procured.
The paper is stacked 1 1/2 inches high and printed in double columns each the size of a book page to make it easier for her to handle. The pages are not printed on the back side. Printed in book form (hardcover) it is 580 pages long. Copyright is filed but finding someone who is interested in something other than romance novels and how to books is a daunting task; unless you are a published author. I may have to publish it myself, imagine that. Anyone out there with an old working mechanical printer in their garage interested in taking on the task? Ginny still can't believe I had that much to say! :lol_hitti

Anvil block for the sawyer's anvil is finished except for a weld at the band seam. I may put a cedar skirt on the bottom once it is on the concrete pad which still needs to be poured. Got stuck in the mud yesterday trying to move the truck so until I can get the anvil off all that's left to do is oil the wood and weld the seam.
