Coming along nicely. It looks so square and plumb.
Does the floor have a drain, this is the first time I've seen the pvc pipe in the bottom left corner of the photo? Or is that for something else?



How do you plan to finish out the interior?

The pipe is to drain the pad around the pool area as the basin area is located in that area and I planned to build a fireplace into the front of the building. That was before I had to move the location of the window. The plan now is to extend a short wall out from the shed and turn the wall ninety degrees then build the FP. This will allow for a small, wind sheltered area to sit in the early winter.
I do not intend to finish out the interior. Beams and bricks a bench and my hand tools.

Still laying bricks every morning. I am two thirds done with the main building. Once the sun gets up I go into the shop, no air, and am building a farm table for my daughter. Some pictures.

BB: I'm loving the brick shed or workshop you are building and after doing a little brick wall around a planting area I really appreciate your brickwork even more. looks like everything is straight, plumb and true from my chair.

just curious are you making your own mortar mix or using a portland cement and sand and what ratio?

how often do you put the metal tabs in rows connecting the brick wall to the 4x4's?

love the farm table and I have a picnic or outdoor table for my daughter on my TO DO LIST probably next year so i'm watching and learning.

Thanks drives. Never tire of seeing a smile on a little girl's face. I put tabs every four courses but do not mix other than to add water and with mortar that is enough. It is very touchy.

BB: not that you need to change your mortar mix, but I watched a ton of YouTube videos and did a lot of Googling and saw that a 1 part Portland cement and 2 part sand mix works great in Pennsylvania which is kinda similar to my part of the world so i've tried it.

that said i'm using sandbag sand that I got free in bags last year and it's a bit gravely, but it's working. it sets up super fast so in case you have parts of this or another project that you'd like the mortar to set up quicker that might be another option.

Hey Drives, you don't put lime with your Portland cement? Makes it more plastic and is in mortar mixes. You should try it if you haven't as you can get nicer joints easier.

Just got back. No deal on the saw mill parts (yet). Brought back the stove and a few things I bought in May. Have to get the mowers going to cut the hay/grass. Also got to unload the stove and unpack ship out books etc. etc. Will get pictures in a few days.

I was interviewed for the newspaper for my novel as word is out. Got a front page spread and another half page on the inside. Unfortunately, only one paper was left when I got to the store.

ANDY: i watched more than a few YouTube videos on brick laying and mortar mixes and also did a ton of Googling and reading and i'm far from an expert at mortar or brick laying, but the 1 part Portland cement and 2 parts sand (from my free sandbag haul that's a bit rocky) worked pretty good and it seems to be working ok.

i'm not sure what the lime does, but some mixes are 4 parts sand, 1 part lime and 1 part portland cement and some of my local old brick and stone masons say the mortar mix at HD is too sandy and I remember that being the case so I was searching for a mix of my own especially since I have about 300 sandbags in my backyard.

i'm guessing BB is using pre mixed bags of mortar S type?

Did a little on the shed yesterday then picked 300 bricks from my new source. I now have 1500 bricks to build my columns and wall for the vintage Charleston gates. Should be fifty to one hundred left.

Thanks Andy. Sales are going good and reviews are great. I need to set up a blog or do Face Book. Googling the title will get our some information and anyone who is interested can also email me privately. I would like to get some reviews posted on these two sites but so far I hadn't thought of asking any of those who have the book.
Hurricane heading this way but is uncertain enough to keep things at bay. If it turns it will be impossible to move on the highways as many Floridians are already on them coming north. Should be a treat to ride out? Maybe my book will become extremely rare? Shudder at the thought. Pray for us. Bobby

Been up since one thirty AM putting on storm shutters. Looks like the best we can hope for is a cat. two with a five foot storm surge in our area. Rain is expected at ten to fifteen inches so I want to be prepared to sit in more traffic after my three thousand mile trip last week. Should be a fun retirement vacation.

Andy I do believe you are right on. We are praying for a directional turn sooner rather than later. even though the government data place it going by us offshore. But you know what I feel about government data. I do believe though that this storm should be renamed Congress; dead in the water doing a lot of damage and going nowhere waiting to see what it can flush next!

Drives prayers good. We got through without any damage thanks to a quick turn at the last minute we were spared the brunt of the tidal surge. Gee I wonder why? Wind damage was minimal but to get home from four miles away I had to clear three large trees from the road. Good thing I took my chainsaw with me. I went back yesterday to get some of the red oak for the kitchen stove this winter but laid awake last night with a migraine for my efforts lifting a huge log onto the truck.

We had a lightning show here last night for about an hour showing just what mother nature can do if it wants too. i haven't heard about any damage yet, but we watch many strikes of lightning look like they were hitting the ground.

Thanks drives. I plan to start some more brick laying today. I have about finished cleaning up after the hurricane. I have cut and moved close to two cord of wood to replace what we burned in the kitchen stove last year. I also scored two nice pecan logs while cleaning up the large (18 inch) tree. They are 10 feet long. I loaded the largest one on the mill yesterday and it is ready to cut. If I have any energy left I plan to make a special bar to walk the logs over and make them easier to cant. The one that's up on the carriage now weighs in at around 2500 lbs. I moved it around alone with a cant hook, pinch bar, and wedges. I do plan to remember the camera now that things slowed a little. Several orders for books also have to be mailed.

BB: I know you've got some power tools and a tractor to help you move that heavy wet wood around, but I had to move a few long wet cedar 6x6's and I can't tell you how heavy they were and cedar is fairly light compared to the wood you find to mill.

I know you know this but BEE CAREFUL moving that heavy wood. would setting up some sort of bridge crane or chain with a hoist be possible so a log wouldn't be able to roll back or fall on you?

drives your concern is always appreciated. You are a good friend. I could set up a chain fall except I have need to keep equipment out of the weather which is taking up the space needed. I have figured out a way to use a small wrecking bar to inch the log over that works very well. In using it I inadvertently pried my carriage off of the track and that caused me to jam the blade in the log which in turn cost a full day of checking and resetting all of my equipment. I sharpened the blade yesterday and learned how to regulate the feed speed for pecan, which is much harder to cut than pine, and cut the first 1 1/4 board. What a beauty. It is 13 inches wide and 10 feet long. I should get four or five boards out of the log.

Yeah i'm all set for this hurricane season. It's so sweet. I still have a lot to learn though about how to tell when my belts are slipping, feed is too slow/fast, saw is dull etc. Always looming is the thought I might ruin such a beautiful pearl.

"Necessity is the mother of invention" Certainly true when it comes to an old man who still thinks he has his forty year old body but has to use his "hopefully" wise old brain as a helper. Like a lion in a cage, as long as you respect his space and not try to feed him thoughtlessly, you can marvel at his power without fear.

That sawmill is very cool. Would love to see it in action. I'm still trying to visualize hoe one "cradles" the plank when it is cut off, or "where it "lands". Seems like a challenge in itself! Great of you to share this with us.

BB: that Pecan wood might come in very handy and looks like you are doing a great job. I've got a couple questions:

1) what are the clamps doing on the log after it ran by the blade?

2) are you putting oil, grease or what kind of lubricant on your rollers to keep them rolling nicely in your open covered sawmill?

keep up the great work and happy to see that maybe another hurricane might have missed you except for a little extra rain.
