That people come here and make jibberish posts no one can understand? Just curious on how they benefit. I am gonna ask the guy directly but don't expect a response.

I guess dogginsiii is trying to be cute after a threat that mentioned gibberish. He seem to think it was quite by clogging the site with all his Chinese language posts. Why not put him in the Time Out chair and suspend him for a few weeks.

trust me cdestuck, they are aware of it.
it is a hard target to eliminate, as the spammers use various technics to avoid detection until you see the multiple hits
notice the time stamps? they hit as quick as possible and then they are out

Who did you PM ? Keep in mind, there all Mods in different time zones so it may went to a Mod that is in bed.

It's always been Hotfr8. I believe he's in Australia. I've talked with him quite a bit after hours. Super neat fella!

Just curious...... How many staff members in all are there here at GJ?

At this point why do I care? As far as I know it doesn't harm me or my computer, does it hurt the forum? Is it malware?
Again what's the object of intent?
If I knew that than maybe I would care

It's advertisement.

Someone paid a spammer to post millions of ads using thousands of hijacked computers. But they got ripped off, because the spammer posted Korean language ads on English-language websites. Those are the risks of dealing with criminals.

The reason you need to keep your computer clean of malware is that if you don't, some spammer will use your computer to post spam.

Nick explained it pretty good.

Sometimes they post links that you do not want to follow. When they are allowed to continue, they will post thread upon thread of nothing more than "****." If we are unaware of them and they go unreported, they'll fill page after page with useless garbage.

As far as caring, why should you or anybody care ? Getting rid of spam makes the site cleaner and run better. Garage Journal has helped tons of people from all over with valuable information. It doesn't cost you a thing to be a member here.

Personally, I'd say for the privilege of using the site, the least any member could do is simply hit the "Report" when they see spam. I don't think that's asking much.

If you noticed, many of those types of posts contain long lists of links. The posts aren't meant to be read, andt those links aren't meant for anybody here, they're intended for search engines to notice, helping to boost the sites ranking in search engines.

Wikipedia has a pretty good overview on spambots posting in forums like this:

Damn straight. I report them when I see them. Didn't see the latest ones, didn't get on here 'til noon or so. You mods do great work and deserve everyone's appreciation, I'm sure it's a trying experience at times.

Thanks.

I see, I did not realize that it would go on and on, help the site run cleaner is above my pay grade but I'll take your word for it and I will make sure I hit the report button from now on.

You are right, tons of people including me and I am grateful for the site and majority of people on it

These did not contain links, only lines of symbols. I understand a little better now with your explanation

3. It's Korean

LMFAO.... There is no Korean Jibbish here in GJ, typical everything is Chinese, even tools.

but seriously all one have to do is just google translate it... for what ? for fun times and happy endings of cause :)

:lol_hitti

I think Mods have done a fine job in this... probably hard to find the real originator of that IP. I think they should make the registration process harder... like waiting for few days after confirmation before able to post more than 1 post/response per 8 hours time frame or something.... that would throttle them....even if they manually register or make them download a happy face gif manually to get their tor IP or something.

I may be a super neat fella but how many times have I said the report button is so much faster to help deal with posts like that. You do not need to PM me about a SPAM post I may not see for 5 to 8 hours later.

Have you tried this link > View Forum Leaders ?
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showgroups.php

At present time I can see I am the only Mod on the forum and it is impossible to have Admin or a Mod here all the time. Since 1/2Cup came on as a Mod we have dealt with many an Asian based Spammer but even then we do not see all. I have even banned spammers before they post given the IP address states a location like South Korea yet they try to link a location in US, UK and Australia.

Every one needs to keep in mind we have a global membership and time is not always on our side to deal with spam but the sooner it is reported it will be dealt with.

Is there a way to make a new person prove they aren't a robot spammer?
I do get up early and report them ASAP..

When Ryan takes the forum to the new format many things will change.

I have noticed many a spammer will post something weird when they join as to what they are. Any thing that looks suspect makes me check them. If you join and and have something that relates to the forum then I may leave them alone and some times they do get past me.

I’ve been on the road a lot this summer and as such, have let a lot of spam get by for longer than it usually does. Typically, I get it within minutes... but I’ve sucked recently. Sorry fellas. Almost done with these damn road trips.

Please report spam and never reply to it or worse follow any links.

We do know you are just like the Mods and you have other things (life) to do away from the forum(s).

Quite often gibberish spam posts are the result of malware on someone's computer and they don't even know it's doing it, especially when it's just one of many thousands (tens or hundreds of thousands) of infected computers doing the exact same thing at the same time. It's one way black hats of all measures from script-kiddies to govt troll farms can show evidence of how many accounts their botnet can effect. They can verify how many accounts posted that exact same **** on forums, social media, etc all over the world at the same time. Some even measure how long it takes for such posts to be removed across the different platforms. It can be a measure of how many machines they control to use for a lot more nefarious purposes.

Such posts also often contain single pixel images that you can't see that can be used for more in-depth stealth traffic monitoring and/or even earn them an income based on number of views, or worse can themselves be used in injection attacks to execute code on machines with no virus protection. And that's just one of the many ways botnets are built.

Ryan:
No need to apologize for anything.

The OP's attitude stinks. He has been a member for a long time, and should know by now what to do when he sees a spam message. Instead he accuses the Mods of not doing anything about it.

He has no clue what's involved in running a forum the size of Garage Journal and the Mods do indeed "take action" every day to see that the forum is one of the best on the internet.

I suggest he take a look at this page: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/index.php and note the thousands of threads and millions of messages that the Mods need to deal with every day to keep the Garage Journal up and running.

My hats are off to you and all the Mods that, AFAIK are all volunteers who spends many hours keeping things tidy around here.

Keep up the good work.

.
