Just came across this as my plant is looking to get rid of it. It's a bit too big for my 2 car garage unfortunately.

Works great as far as I know, we just don't use it.

I didn't grab a Pic of the whole thing as the shop was in use, but here's the nameplate...

8' bed any other pics, condition etc?

I'll try to get out and take a few more pics. It's dirty, but I don't know much about it yet.

As of right now, it's destined for the scrap bin. It's just painful to think about. Searching online, looks like it could weight 12-15k lbs

If someone wanted it, I bet I could help work something out.

When they sometimes go in an auction all they bring is scrap money. My housemate has collected 2 large lathes that sit outside and he thinks he may use someday but I kind of doubt it.

That must be a monster. Is it a vacuum tube Lathe? Has it been well maintained or has it been rode hard and neglected?

If they are dead set on scraping it. Remove tail stock tool post carriage chuck gears etc. They are all worth money and can keep someone else's lathe working away.

I agree with this
If it does get scrapped there are pieces that are worth money to keep and try to sell.
Some pieces can be considered wall art, other will be used for their function

Exactly I sold a set of gears from an old clausing lathe to a guy that made them into clocks to resell.

Honestly, something like that won't happen as much as I would love.

We have buildings full of old iron like this (seriously, multiple buildings, it's unbelievable) and don't have people to manage it, nor the desire to spend more money. If we can't get someone to take the whole machine, it will get scrapped.

Definitely list it on Craigslist
Donate to a local trade school (if such exists)?
In my unvested opinion, selling to someone that will use may bring less money than scrap but is a better option, many a small job shop would love to have a decent lathe.

Craigslist isnt worth it for us. The hassle of fielding calls and dealing with flaky sellers would greatly outweigh the money it might bring, which I am guessing would be well short of 5k

The trade school suggestion is interesting, but I don't think our lawyers would do that

If you're interested in selling the lathe, how much would you ask for it? I'll have to think about the shipping cost though...but I'd like to know and mull it over.

Bud

Right now, if we could get it out the door at no cost, that could be enough. Challenge is that would be a couple grand in rigging, at least, plus shipping and crating on a 15k lb, 48x96 machine.

A six ton hulk from Massachusetts to Missouri, how much is that going to cost?

Sorry, but it’s best the old girl is taken out behind the barn and shot.

Trade schools don't want it. A local college around here is selling ALL of their lathes, some in really nice shape and pretty modern. Why? The guy told us that they have to have safe operating procedures written up for each variety of lathe, so it's easier and cheaper for them to be all the same. Add to it that the larger the lathe, the less it gets used as students are scared of them (rightfully so, though it's better to respect a machine than to be scared of it.) A 15" lathe they're selling looked very lightly used, I can't imagine what they would need a 22.5" for.

Stuff like this is always tempting..........

Will they load it on a trailer? Heck, if there is enough "scrap", I would buy a tractor trailer and start hauling it away for them.

Most of the stuff is in buildings, off the main floor. There is equipment that easily exceeds 50k lbs. Riggers are required

Unfortunately there's just not much call for a lathe that big anymore, and it's too large for most home shops. Also, being 60 years old, chances are there's significant wear on the ways and other parts that would be expensive to repair.

Thats a nice size lathe but I wouldn't call that a monster lathe. A machinist I worked with for years opened his own shop (ST Gear and Machine). He recently purchased a WW-2 era American Super Productive lathe (55000lbs) that I would call a monster. Check out his web site and see what he can machine with this lathe and his massive gears he can do.

Contact Abom79 on instagram or YouTube. I'm guessing he wants it. Would look neat next to the one he already has.

Correct - It's ridiculous to even suggest shipping that lathe. Big old lathes, etc., like that are almost always scrap these days. Not good enough for production use and too large for home shops.

The fact that you would even ask that question tells me you have no idea of what all is involved in moving a lathe like this.

This monster is for sale locally (to me) in western CO. (It is not mine just saw it on CL).
Binns and Berry Bros 14 ft gap bed lathe, 26" clearance over ways.
There is still a place for these in some machine shops especially for simple operations to prep a part for CNC, roughing in, trepanning, or huge one-offs. I know of a shop with a huge lathe used just for that purpose. But its a bit big for my back porch.

It's hard to get rid of big old machines, sadly.

A few years back I had to cut up a nice DeVlieg bore mill because I couldn't give it away. Not even the scrappers would take it because I couldn't let them in the plant to disassemble it due to liability.
Had the maintenance guys cut it into small enough pcs to load onto our trucks and haul it out.
