Someone asked me if i can build a table top support like this:



"Of course" i said as usual Only problem was the material thickness (25x12mm).
So i got me a ring bender:


bent 4 rings in 25x5mm (max capacity)


beveling the edges


after welding two together



electrode massacre


grinding the welds...


...and finishing


sawing 25x10mm material


setting up for the final welding of the rings to the "legs"



finished metal work


and since it was so much fun ....and 2 were ordered...:
(one tall, one short).They´re 25x10mm instead of 25x12mm but should work too

A quick rust repair on a VW Bus:

Monte: i always learn something when i check on one of your threads. today isn't any different. nice paper trick/method to make a pattern for your project.

did you put any welding material on the original rusted spot before you welded the patch on?

i'm just learning how to weld and i'll probably ask a lot of what might seem like dumb questions so hope you don't mind.

Nice job on the tables. Is that an iron powder weld rod? Nice slag residue (but couldn't you have organized it?)

Hi,
i didn´t put anything under the patch nor did i cut out the rust. If you want to do it good you should invest a bit more time, cut out the rust add the patch and flood it with cavity wax (or cavity grease). I only painted the patch on both sides and covered it with underbody protection. I figured out it will be good enough for this car to pass vehicle inspection.

There are no dumb questions, just dumb answers . So ask if you have questions !

I don´t know the exact US specification for the rods. But i used these here:

Monte: that one patch almost looked like you were repairing a prior patch and not a lot of good steel to weld to. is your go to tool for cutting out old rusty steel your Fein with the half moon shaped blade or maybe your Metabo with a flap disk or do tell?

I'm curious how you are bending your steel for your repairs cause i didn't see a bender in your shop? maybe staring the bend on the press and then squaring it up on the vise or the edge of your steel bench or anvil for your 90 degree bends. for the rounded ones i'm also curious if you have time to show or tell us.

i always like seeing your ORGANIZATION and i'm striving to get there some day where i know where more than 20% of my tools and stuff is when i need it.

also i'm not sure if you are using Photobucket, but there are a lot of threads that are that are getting pictures deleted unless you pay PB a $400 annual fee to have 3rd party hosting. i used to use PB until all the changes they made years ago made it difficult for me so now i just download pictures using the paperclip just above where we write our posts. i always like your big pictures, but would hate to see them disappear so giving you a heads up on maybe starting another method of posting them if you don't already.

They build it like that...The VW vans are made by their truck division so the built quality is maybe a bit more "rustic" I often use the Fein but usually a angle grinder with a thin (1mm) cutting disc. The Fein is good if you don´t want to cut through overlapping material.

One of the garage buddys has a metal brake. I have a slip roll. But i also use the vise or pieces of steel or wood to bend material. Depends on what works.

Don´t worry the organization in your thread looks good !

I got this Daewoo in the garage right now:

the front bumper has a crack. It was "repaired" with rivets...:

bevelled the crack:

Then i used this 2 component glue...

...to fill it up:

Before i glued wire mesh to the rear:

After sanding the glue i added bondo:

sanding bondo:

to sand the edges of the bumper i used this flexible sandpaper from 3M:

drying the (water based) paint:

adding 2 component clear coat:

and the finished job: not perfect but better than before

Very cool place Monte! I have been kicking around here for quite awhile too and also need to take some pictures of my garage. It is still in somewhat sad shape, but it hasnt stopped me from hoarding some items i like how yours is a very organized mess!
