Closed on my first house end of august, been doing the remodeling thing to the living spaces.

So far the Hardwood floor refinishing has been the toughest, but most rewarding. Ive attatched before/after pics :bounce:

Now its on to the garage plans.

This is a slow going zero $ budget that i'm looking to complete by the end of 08 (as I'm still refinishing some of the living space).

I plan on building the work bench, cabinets and storage bins, so everything can be custom sized.

My little 10X21 needs some love and attention
On the list already:
Fix the walls/ceiling. They are unfinished, with random nails and odd shelfs/hooks everywere.
Coat the floor. Have not decided what to use just yet. I'll figure it out by springtime. Most likely white epoxy-coat EDIT...Most likely not epoxy coat See thread below vs my thumb
Build Workbench I need a place to work on a variety of things (electronics, my guitar/amps, automotive stuff, some wood working)
Build Cabinets and Storage I need a place for tools (Hand sander, cicular saw, and a drill is it for the bigger stuff (Pegboards for the smaller items) Car maintainence stuff (oil, coolant, parts, and detailing stuff.
More outlets I think there is only 1 in there now :headscrat
Lights Theres a single bulb in the dead center.Decided on five 2t8 4' fuixtures with diffuser
Please advise on anything I'm missing and should consider in my plans.

Now the big question is...... How can I maximize my space and still keep it a workable Garage?

I'd like have room to sit at my workbench, park in the garage, and work on the car when needed (no lift :( Just jack stands). and the wife will probably use it to bring the kids in when its raining.

I attatched a floorplan for referece.

Are there any tried and true dimentions I should use as my guide when building my bench and arranging the layout of the cabintes?

And no ferraris in this garage either.... This is going to house my subaru

And...... for the second time since we moved in last year, I pulled the subaru into the garage :bounce::thumbup::beer:

First, congratulations on the house! I'm jealous of the floors (especially after getting quotes on real wood floors).

Second, nice car, the best looking Subaru made in my opinion.

There's no shame in a small garage, here's an old one of mine. The only idea I can offer up is a collapseable workbench that folds up and covers the pegboard behind it. Then put cabinets above the pegboard/folding workbench. I wish I was as artistically inclined as some of the other guys here.

Good luck!

Seems like a longer version of my old TH garage:

I had a shelving unit and a cheap-o work bench with a pegboard back. I'd suggest some upper cabinets with doors on them along the backwall...up and out of the way and keeps things looking clean.

Naturally put 3 or so florescent fixtures, two over the car and over over the workbench area and paint it a nice light glossy color. This will do wonders!

Thanks for the compliments on the floor and the car :)

Some new measurements reveal i could get some 18-20" high, by 15" or so deep cabinets along ceiling on the side wall opposite the house entry. I'm thinking I can keep an open shelf, or continue the cabinets without doors as it gets covered by the door track.

A big problem is the AC line. Comes out of the wall, turns up and goes across the ceiling. It was installaed around a shelving unit, so when i remove that, the ac line will be a good 10" away from the wall. Not sure if i can move it/lengthen it, or if I'll have to cover it up with a column or something.

And I'm glad to see some other small usable garages out there.

I'll also need to allocate a place to keep my fishing stuff (rods, tackle, waders, etc..)

Nice looking project, and great looking Subaru. I'd love to pick up a nice RS 2.5 Coupe at some point. Do you still have the NA 2.5l motor in it, or have you swapped in a turbo powerplant yet? :)

Here's a pic of a crazy shelf that was up when we purchased. it was kinda handy as we moved in, but it was the first thing to come down.
main.php

Some Floor shots - Most of this is now moved out, to make room fo rthe subaru.
main.php

Not sure what this is - but i'm sure it would make a nice floor since its rock hard and seems unscratchable.

Alright.... So here's where we're at now.

All New dry wall(aside from ceiling), painted with Sherwin Williams duration (super gloss) exterior paint.
The stripe is SW exterior accents with .25" vinyl pinstripe tape from http://www.lettersunlimited.com/striping.htm

New lights. 5 two 32 watt T8 fixtures with diffusers from home depot.

One shelf cut from old boards, and Fishing pole racks (bike rack) from home depot.

main.php

Next on the list is a wolverine floor, some cabinets and additional shelves.

I realise its a little late now that you have painted but that AC line can be moved most likely run through the attic and on the outside of the exterior wall you would have to have a AC contractor move it but its not a hard job and they could most likely reuse the existing lineset. I will add your garage is cleaning up very nice.

Thanks...

I'll admin most of my **** is piled elsewhere :)
Ive been thinking about the ac line... I decided to hold off because I noticed condensation, and was fearful of that in the ceiling since there will be no circulating air (bedroom above).

Since I'm on the close to zero as possible budget, I figured I'd leave it as is until I figure it out.

What are my options here?
Put it in the ceiling?
Maybe a prettier looking cover around it?
any others???

I would say in the ceiling for sure it may need new insulation on it hard to tell in the pic but if you are getting condensation the insulation is open somewhere . The larger line ( suction line ) will condense as it is usually around 50 to 55 degrees thats the reason for the insulation on it to keep it from condensing all over the place ( there are other reasons for the insulation ) . I run linesets in attics all the time with no problems . I would have it run up the outside of the wall into the attic then drop it back down into the mechanical room where the furnace is .A temp fix for the insulation can be found at hommie desperate or lowes they both sell insulation that is split on one side and has sticky tape on the seam . You will want to also seal the seams between sections that will stop the condensation in the garage till you can afford to move it .

Thanks... The condensation occurs when is humid out, and i have the doors open. Heh... but i guess thats when you use it.

Given the layout, I might even be able to get the lines through the ceiling from the outside to the furnace without cutting up the ceiling.

I dont think the ceiling would have to be cut to rerun them either they just need to be unhooked on one end rerun then hooked back up . Only reason you will need a contractor for this is due to the freon having to be removed the lines vacuumed down after being hooked back up and the freon put back in.

coming along very nicely! its very VERY similar to my space, only major difference is that mine has a few more feet in length, and the interior door is closer to the garage door. your floor is a walk in the park compared to the cracked slab i have.

i like the black pinstripe you have on your red stripe

Thanks. It was an afterthought to fix the paint bleeding behind the tape.

$6 bucks of vinyl (another $8 to ship :wtf: ) was enough to go around, make a few mistakes, and still have some left over.

I know this was a little while ago but I found the thread while searching for something else. Just a thought for you... I get those big rubber coated hooks and screw them into the ceiling (or the wall near the ceiling) and hang my fishing rods there. Depending on your clearance, they could even possibly hang above the garage door when it is open. After all, there isn't a whole lot else that can hang in that space.

So the end of 08 is close.

Here's the update on my progress.

Walls, Ceiling, and lights are done!

Was going to build a workbench for the cost savings, but santa brought one early, along with a ball bearing 10 drawer chest. :)

Fishing storage put up (bike rack hooks)

Still only one outlet

....Plans for 09 are to finish up the floors (have decided on wolverine)

and get some cabinets to get the stuff up off the floor.

OK... so no fancy floors yet... going to have to wait for my wolverine floors just a bit more. Fred.... hang in there with me. :)

Since buying the house, I've gone from 1 bulb in the center to 5 twin bulb 4ft florescent lamps.

added three workbenches heavy duty steel in the back, craftsman and butcherblock on the side.

Mother in laws kitchen cabinets painted white (doors going on soon)

more tools than i can possibly fit Drill press, floor grinder, table saw, miter saw, 20 gallon compressor, an even bigger vacuum, etc... ( i love garage sales)

...and the scoob still fits

Hey,

Just saw this thread and am amazed at the progress and how it looks. Good job!

I also have a single car garage and your post has given me a few ideas for storage and overall layout.

Keep us up to date on your future developments!

Agreed - great project. Also shows that constant progess, even if slower than desired - always beats no progress against dreams.

Keep at it - enjoy it - and I hope you didn't get rid of the 914.

FWIW,
