Well I certainly hope this plays out well. Bottom line I've been extremely disappointed with Sears ever since the Wall Street financier pulled his stunts and acquired Kmart and then Sears.

I wish for the best outcome, but do not give it much hope.

It burned my rump when I took my craftsman tape measure back for warranty replacement and they gave me a Stanley in return...the manager claimed that it's only for the tape measures because they were losing too much money on them....my question to him was "how long you think it'll be before they start doing that on everything?" He simply replied that he didn't think they would but he wasn't sure. I hope they turn it around because I'm a fan of their tools since I can't justify paying 10 grand for a set of snap on screwdrivers

That Stanley tape measure lasted me no time. I usually use the kobalts from lowes. It wasn't the tape measure that upset me, it was the principle about removing a warranty from one of their products that they've covered for years. It was a tape measure that my father had given me before he passed.

We used to use Craftsman tapes at my work (we measure stuff for a living), they were my favorite for many reasons but one big reason was the warranty and ease of rebuilding them with replacement tapes whenever they snapped. It sucked when they stopped warrantying them years back. I still haven't found a tape I like as much as those Craftsmans from 10yrs ago. We're using FatMax tapes now but I hate those things (glad I'm not out there measuring anymore). They are strong because they're "fat" but I'm not a big guy, my hands aren't big, so they feel massive in my hand and aren't very practical.

FYI, they gave you a Stanley because craftsman no longer makes a tape measure... I had a similar experience a couple years ago and couldn't believe it when they told me that. I knew then that they were done as a brand. I realize that cheap HF freebies and the like have made it a losing battle but what "tool" company no longer makes a measuring tool as simple as a tape measure?

I agree with both of you. I didn't know that they no longer made tape measures, they still had craftsman tape measure when I traded that one out, he just implied that the warranty stopped on those due to the ease of destroying them. I used to use them a lot more than I do now when I did hvac work and that Stanley met it's demise off of a 20 foot cherry picker, I've dropped my kobalts from roughly the same distance with no issues. All I use at work now is a 10ft machinists tape and only use the kobalt and a Milwaukee at home for projects.
Huge fan of Milwaukee power tools though!

No other tool company offers a warranty on tapes the way Craftsman did. I'm not a professional and not hard on tape measures, but plenty of people are and it's no surprise they were losing their *** on warranty costs. They made the decision to completely stop selling them to avoid confusion among customers and employees regarding the warranty. IMO this was probably the best move to save frustration.
