The ceiling fixture looks great!

Old houses are always a lot of fun to work on. Nothing ever fits like it would on a newer house.

I used to have and old house. I dreaded doing plumbing, none of the old pipe fittings fit new parts very well and it was always an adventure.

The upper floor was completely covered with linoleum but we want to make the house as authentic as possible so the linoleum has to go to make place for the original wooden floor. As aspected the cover was there for a reason. Some larger parts are replaced with ugly 'pressed wood' panels and have to be replaced by old wood again. The hunt is on to find old wood for the larger pieces but for now I tried a little piece as a test. Found an old piece of a doorpost on the attic and used it to fix a really bad piece that was covered before with a metal plate under the linoleum. Had to be a little inventive to make it work but think it came out nice. Nothing even close to a perfect match but think it now looks like an old repair so mission accomplished I think.

Good patch. Nice to see you wanting the floor to be returned to original-ish wood.

Are you going to refinish the floors to show the hardwood?

I had friends who were restoring an old house. They wanted to restore the hardwood floors. Most rooms were in pretty good shape, but others were not. Patches and areas like you described. They decided to sacrifice the wood floor from one room to patch all the other rooms. Then they used plywood for that floor and carpeted that room. Their house turned out nice, you could barely see that the hardwood floors had been patched, the old wood stained and had the same surface wear as the rest of the wood in the room. Their house turned out beautiful, but it nearly killed them in nights/weekend work and their marriage was touch and go for a while during that time...

I see you are keeping busy. I have to admit I prefer working with wood over other materials. Something about the touch and able to shape it so easily. The varieties of lumber, textures, colours it is just amazing. I have some really wide growth material that came in a shipping crate from Mexico. Not used to that in Canada with the shorter growing season. Going to do something special with that Mexican lumber.

Steaks&Anvils : Thanks! In another room my mother treated the wood with wax or such thing, has to ask what she did with it but now it looks more bright. We thought about that route also and sacrifice the upstair corridor. But still need old wood to make that happen to because we don't want carpet. Last choice would be a new wooden floor for the corridor but that will be our last choice. Advantage if we sacrifice the corridor, the rooms can be finished and we can temporally close the floor there with modern OSB panels or so until we found something old for it. Tonight I stopped at an old building that is gone be demolished very close to my mothers home and left my phone number at the neighbors. Hope we can rescue some old wood and maybe other materials before they crush it all.

Miss the Pontiacs : Thanks! I'm always busy but not always have stuff that may be of some interest for you guys :). Like all kind of materials and like to mix them if necessary. Good luck on the mexican lumber!

It would be great to salvage from the building to be demolished! Reuse is better than recycle.

Keep an eye on that building, Don't count on the neighbors passing on your phone number. I have found that if you are not persistent, they can tear it down quickly and you will miss out on the chance.

Do you have government website that lists the owner information (tax information etc)? We have that here in America and we can sometimes contact the owners that way. Also here, they must post the demolition permit and we can get information from that too.

May be try sending a letter to that address? The mail might be forwarded to the owner?

Good luck!

Nice set Tostal!

Went by the house that's gonna be demolished and left a note. So let's hope they'll contact me and are willing to part out of the wooden floor.

While waiting for bigger pieces of old wood I took care of 2 small areas in another room. It was a lot more complicated as the bigger piece I did few days ago in a room upstairs. Had to adjust the hight because the floor seams to be not evenly high everywhere. Was thinking about cutting a little 'stripe' in the inlays to complete the groove but maybe it's nicer as is now? Also threaten the wood with 'marseille' soap water to 'wax' it a bit. So it's soap that's mixed with hot water, brushed in the wood and then wiped off.

Nice patches. I agree that a groove will make the patches blend in more to the original floor. There is an honesty to a sympathetic repair, it shows the care and respect one has for the original craftsmen.

The board height/thickness issue. Old lumber was not always the same thickness consistently. The carpenters (as needed) would cut out a channel where the too thick board crossed a joist. This made all the boards have a uniform top surface.

Don't forget to visit dealers in 'Architectural Salvage' (i.e. stuff saved from old buildings) for timber/wood in 'old' sizes - theirs comes already 'aged'

Wout sorry to read about the bug. Sad that older cars are not respected for what they are and that improvements are not allowed.
