moss

ok, I want to hear your moss removal remedies. I've searched google but its just full of commercial stuff that's harmful to animals. I did read about Tide washing soap has anyone used this? the moss is really bad here this year plus I have a lot of roof area and drive way. I used Moss-Be-Gone a few years ago but now its so bad that i'll need a pickup load of it. THANKS!

Lots of problems when roof remains in shade and stays wet. Just was talking with roofer couple weeks ago, and they have one-time treatment they spray on that is supposed to last 10 years. Or homeowner could spray periodically with diluted bleach.

Be sure to get shingles that are Algae Resistant.

I use powdered tide. Throw a good dusting all over the area a few days before it rains and it'll kill the moss- you'll see it yellow. Then I go up with a light broom and/or pull off clumps by hand to clean up. After a few treatments and I'm 80% better. Doesn't kill any grass of plants at least on my property.

I'll likely try a moss specific product in the spring or possibly bring in a roof cleaning company...

Chemistry teacher related this story years ago. He was getting moss on his patio so went to get some killer. Reading the contents most of them were copper sulfate. So he went to the bank and bought $10 worth of pennies and scattered them around. They did the job and the next year he let the grand-kids pick up the pennies and turn them in.

I had terrible moss in one of my flower beds. I would scrape it off in spring and would just come back.

Last spring I got pissed. 1 cup of bleach to a gallon of water in a pump sprayer. After a week, most of it was still there. 2 cups per gallon. Repeat weekly until it is gone.

thanks for the replies, I will probably go with the moss out or moss be gone on my roof. the run off go's out to the road then into a brush field. I don't want to use it on the drive way and have the dog get in it. it also might be hard on the lawn down the edge of the drive. I think i'm going to try the Tide on the drive way.

Locally the home improvement guys on the radio suggest cheap laundry detergent. Spread it around at the top and let the rain take care of the rest. I've seen the results and I'm a believer.

Use Tide WITH bleach. Not Tide and bleach. Sprinkle it lightly everywhere you want the moss gone. Don't assume it will run down from the peak of the roof. The bleach kills the moss. The Tide holds the bleach where you put it. On the roof, with any pitch, the moss will disappear. It will die. On flat surfaces an alternative is to spray with Purex diluted 50/50 with water. It won't work on slanted surfaces as well since it runs off. This is as environmentally friendly as you can get. I live in Washington so I know what your problem is. If you don't believe me, find a professional roofer and ask them.

I remember an episode of This Old House (or one of them) where they placed a copper wire just below the peak of the roof to take car of the roof moss.

The copper wire along the ridge is the classic solution.
I do like the pennies spread on the roof though.
The same effect and undoubtedly cheaper.

Had moss on my shed roof and I attacked it with a pressure washer and it came out great…I only used water…no soap or whatever

Be carful with bleach, 50-50 mixture is too strong. I used water4-1 bleach and that still changed roof color. As to copper sulfate works great. I sprayed a mixture of 8oz copper sulfate (purchased on Flea bay) to 2 gallon water, than I sprayed a diluted bleach solution on the roof immediately after applying copper sulfate. This displaces copper in the sulfate, which leaves colloidal copper metal embedded in the shingles, unnoticeable but should last years to stop moss from growing.
