I have a bunch of fake, plastic 1/2 barrels that we keep on the deck and plant veggies in, mostly tomatoes. The small HF movers dollies are perfect for moving them around and at frequently $7.99, there is nothing at the garden center that is even close. They are some unknown wood with rug stapled on the end pieces. They were never intended for outdoor use, the rugs soak up water and and they rot in a couple of seasons. I finally got around to doing it right and bought a bunch the other day. I will remove the rug and the question is what to coat them with. Paint peals, Opaque stain lasts longer than transparant or semi transparant but is closer to paint and also peals. The clearer stuff can be recoated but doesn't last that long. These are not for show and any tan or brown or natural color will do. The casters have done OK, left outside. What is the most bullet proof finish. The wood is not pressure treated. I considered building from scratch using 5/4 pressure treated and reusing casters. That is plan B if I cannot preserve the new ones. There is probably some urethane paint out there but it probably would be cheaper to replace the dollies a few times. Thanks.
