My go-to 3/8” and 1/2” mid length ratchets are from Japanese toolmaker Truecraft. I’ve used these regularly since the late 1970s. The 3/8” ratchet has the smoothest and most comfortable finish I’ve ever seen on such a tool. My favorite long handle ratchet is a 1/2” tool from Wright. A real American classic that is an absolute pleasure to use. Like most of you, I have many different ratchets to serve different purposes but these are my most favorite and most used.

Probably an unpopular answer.

I picked up one of those 3/8" Wera quick release ratchets and really like it. It doesn't have the appearance of being particularly beefy, but I have little doctor hands so that's OK.

What is your most used or first grab ratchet during work?

1/4 0r 3/8 0r 1/2?

Long handle or short? (What is the length?)

Flex or fix head, flex with lock?

Quick release or sealed head? Low profile really matters?

Comfort grip or hard chrome handle?

Any recommend brand?
I like using a one inch ratchet, I can use a series of reducer/adapters to fit quarter in drive sockets.
Really? The job assignment will require different tools, so how can a working mechanic answer the question?

I think the question is which ratchet are you picking up most often from all your ratchets in your life so if you were a diesel tech Maine that’s a 1/2” or if you were a tractor far, tech it’s 3/4” or a regular car mechanic maybe 3/8 and then from there is it short medium long and fixed or flex as your go to
