I needed a filter wrench to remove the old filter for the Deutz diesel generator I made a thread on. It was very close quarters in near the oil filter on the gen set and none of the things I had on hand were working. I tried a regular old strap wrench in a few sizes, tried the press on style and tried a band clamp style wrench and none of them could quite get it. I started to do some searching on amazon and found this wrench, it seemed to get really good reviews. Then I looked up the company and it turned out to be about 20 mins away. I called them up to make sure they had them in stock and was told to come on up.

The tool itself looks to be well made. It took about 2 mins to climb under the gen set and pop the filter loose, worked great. I have no ties to this company at all, just thought I would show a nice tool that worked for me, if it hasn't been shown here before. I ended up buying a set of 2 sizes that was on sale, and I am pretty sure I got the last one because it says the set is no longer in stock.

I briefly browsed their shop and they had some other nice tools they sold, but mostly focused on making good quality oil filter changing products.

Do you have a “long term” review update on this? I’m thinking about buying one, wondering how it has held up over time and how effective it has been. Seems like most reviews are positive. Does it destroy the filters? Not that it matters much as I would only use to remove old filters and hand tighten new ones.

Obviously I'm not the OP, but I wanted to chime in with a few things.

I don't own this style of oil filter wrench because I think long term the spring would become an issue. I'm not sure if the tool relies on that spring to manipulate the jaws... I had a similar designed Lisle oil filter wrench at one time years ago, but the spring kept popping off, and I got rid of it. I never really even got a chance to actually use it.

Instead I've been using an older Husky (for smaller/normal sized filters) and a Blue-Point (for larger filters) 3-jaw style oil filter wrench for several years. I used them both professionally too when I worked in a shop. Unfortunately neither one is made or sold anymore, but I prefer this style because it doesn't require any small parts like a spring. There are actual gears that spin and manipulate the jaws open or closed.

MotiveX makes good stuff. They recently have converted their entire lineup of cup type oil filter wrenches to made in the USA from billet aluminum oil filter wrenches. I have one of their 64.3mm cup wrenches for the oil filter on my 2021 Toyota Camry. Best made oil filter cap wrench I've ever seen.

I bought their smallest adjustable for use on a stuck 14610 filter, which are fairly common. It was still too big, and wouldnt grab correctly. These wrenches are not exclusive to MotiveX. The are relabeled for other brands as well.

Thanks all for the info. I read over the thread “Favorite Oil Filter Wrench?” before I first commented on this post and I saw that some said they liked the lisle version but several others said the MotiveX was an improvement on the design and functionality. I might see if I can find some blue point 3 prong jaw ones on eBay. Anyone else have success with the 3 jaw style wrench? I’m really just looking for a semi-universival wrench that will work on a variety of sizes of oil filters that are recessed in the engine bay where there’s not enough room to grab with your hands or not enough room to fit pliers in there. Just a DIY guy that does oil changes for several friends and family members. I don’t particularly want the cup style because then it’s like a dozen different sizes 100 bucks and an entire tool drawer later and you still might not have the right size.

I still use the filter wrenchs, I took them to work and use them on large marine engines when they fit. They seem to still be holding up, and when they fit on a filter, it's my tool of choice. They do chew up the filter a little, but I don't ever plan on keeping the old ones, I just want the old ones off. My only complaint is they don't make a larger sized one, or two. I come across some big filters at work, and often have to use a strap wrench because these won't fit on the giant filters. 1/2" drive would be more ideal for larger sizes.

I have a three jaw, not sure the mfg, but the Lisle is 10X better; it really bites in and does not slip; the three jaw does, so I stopped using it. When you're removing a filter, you don't care about marking it up. Tighten by hand, and use the Lisle if necessary to remove.

Can't speak for the Motivx brand but the design is very good and the long term durability of the style wrench has been excellent (6 yrs in a professional shop). I have the Lisle brand in 3 different sizes and the clamping force generated is enough for very stuck filters. Yes the filters become deformed, but they will be removed. Also being able to use a variety of rachet / extension combinations with there tools make them even more versatile. Hope this helps.

Wow, I didn't realize Husky discontinued that little adjustable oil filter wrench, that *****. It's great, I still use mine pretty frequently.

I have their Toyota filter wrench. I don't have the Toyota anymore, but I gave it to a buddy who is a tech and he's been using it for a while and hasn't had any issues that I've heard about.

That's strange. Maybe you got a defective one? I've been using the Lisle 63600 filter wrench for 20+ years with no issue.

Yeah, unfortunately Home Depot is always changing their product lineup. Most of the stuff they had that was aimed specifically for automotive use is gone. Some of it may still be available online and it may vary from store to store.

But that oil filter claw has hundreds of oil changes under its belt. One of those cheap basic tools that just works.

Entirely possible. But regardless, it's been a few years now (2018). It didn't last very long and I may have thrown it in the trash out of frustration. I'm always buying and trying new tools, sometimes they work and other times they don't.

I've got several oil filter tools. At least two of each type (plus low profile filter sockets, not pictured). Things don't always fit or you need a little more torque, or you need special filter sockets like in the case of Toyota.
