Motorcycle chain Riveter????

Anybody use one before...? I ordered a new Vortex sproket set along with a 520 chain conversion for my streetbike...I was hoping it came with the old style masterlink.No such luck..now I'm looking at shelling out another 130 bucks to press the rivets on the connecting link.I saw one at HF for arounf 50 bucks ..but it looks sketchy...a greybeard friend of mine told me it could be done with a punch on my anvil...not sure I wanna trust that method...

The HF will be ok for someone that uses it only occasionally. Don't epect to do too many chains with it though. If you are in good with any local shops they may let you borrow one of their's. The anvil thing works but you really have to watch what you are doing.

I don't know much about the Harbor Freight riveter. I bought an EK riveting tool several years ago. I ended up changing my chain under the awning of a motel entrance in the pouring rain, the day before a 3,000 mile trip:

It's important to head the rivet without bending it, smashing the head, or accidentally compromising the X-ring space between the plates. You also need a way to press on the outer plate, which a proper riveting tool will do.

I would buy the proper tool from a good company.

Funny enough, when I changed a chain my SV recently, I bought a stock continuous chain by accident. I spent two days tearing the rear end apart and re-lubing or replacing all the suspension needle bearings, shock, shock mount, dogbones, exhaust, etc.

The DID looking riveter on this page is supposed to be pretty decent. It looks like they have raised the price significantly if you don't also purchase a chain from them at the same time. They used to be about $15.

I am on the NS hand have a tool to do the job it is converted from industrial use to moto use. I use to do pops bike all the time with it and a few neighbors/ clients with motox bikes.

Thanks 4 the offer,I'm trying to get a hold of a buddy who races dirtbikes, I think he might have one.The only other idea I had was to try the anvil method and then pull the swingarm..trying to avoid that much work if I can help it....the master link idea wont work,it wont stand up 2 the pressure of the motor...

I've got this chain tool from MotionPro and I'm pretty happy with the quality. The instructions are very thorough. It took me about 30 minutes to take off the old chain and to install a new one.
