Any ideas ?

I have now about 5 helmets They are taking up too much shelf space I would like to store them up the right way and not hang them by the strap as they seem to make good nests when stored that way,

The biggest issue with hanging them on the wall....they collect dust....inside and out.

About the only solution is a cabinet to keep them in.....unless you have the protective bags they came in (which most of us toss when we get the helmet)

I only have one and it just stays on the bike....my wifes is in it's cloth bag and is in on of the cabinets.

You might consider making a trip to Target....see if they have some Rubber Made stuff that the helmets would fit in....

How about an old tall school locker? Just add a shelf for each helmet to sit on. Wouldn't take up much floor space that way.

My first post here! We are closing on our new house later this month and both me and the wife to be are riders, so is one of my 3 sons so we have 7 or 8 helmets in the closet. My plan is to by some mannequin heads and mount the helmets on them when not in use. Kids thing it's a cool ides, wife to be.....not so much.

I like the mannequin idea as long as the head on it is small to the helmet. If the helmet fits snug it will take the shape of the head over time. I have two in the race trailer. In the bags they came with on a pit-pal shelf. Two in the house. In the bags and setting on a shelf in the mud room. And one on a shelf in the garage. It is just a show helmet these days. In racing we need to have snell approved and they have to be updated every so often. My race helmets then become my street helmets.

Show us some pics of your garage, to help give us an idea of to recommend..Also are they nice helmets, do you want to display them??.I have alot of Gladiator cabinets, if I wanted to hide them I would put them in one of my cabs. I only have 1 MC helmet, and I just have it in it's dustbag, hanging from a hook..It's not an expensive helmet, so I'm not really interested in showing it off. I sold my bike about five years ago..

I never liked the idea of putting the helmet over anything like a mannequin head, I thought that would mash the inside foam down and make the helmet not as comfortable.

I have a couple of shelves dedicated for riding gear (5 motorcycles in the garage), my storage method is keeping them in the bags that came with them and putting them up on a wire shelf.

I like that idea as well....but as noted by others....it needs to be small so as not compress the foam.....and one other thing comes to mind....airing it out....the inside of a helmet can get a bit 'grungy' from day to day use....I think it helps to let it air out over night....a mannequin head may inhibit that....

Still like the idea though....especially if the kids paint the head to look like something funny....

Love the mannequin head idea but it does not save me any space.

I too have the Snell problem in that the helmet is no longer usable for Racing however it is to good to throw away.

Then I have some smaller kids Moto X type helmets for friends kids to use on the Quad.

I was thinking hooks like chillrich suggests in a vertical arrangement like an old tall school locker ala Cowboy73. But mounted maybe up the sides of my window casings as I have run out of floor space...

I will take pictures this pm and post

Thanks for all your inputs

Ok so a cleanup is probably my first priority and trying to think outside the box I am coming up with a 2" pipe idea so I can get the vertical stacking

I bought 2 very good helmets several years ago when I was riding but after getting married and having a kid the bike sat in the garage for a long while. I put the helmets in bags and set them on the shelf. The insides of one of them just deteriorated into dust and the other one became home to a mouse who totally destroyed the inside. If I were to store them again, it would be in a tightly air sealed plastic or metal container.

how come so many helmets, I only have 2 because its nice to have one for a passenger but other than that I wear my helmet daily and when I get a new one I throw the old away.

but to answer the question, I have the spare on a hook on the wall, I used a towel hook sold for bathrooms and put the helmet in the cloth bag it came in and hang it on the wall.

It's hard to throw out a helmet you paid $700 or more for. And some of mine are cusotm painted. Two of the them to match the race bikes. Just hard to part with I guess.

Yeah, I gave up on the custom paint jobs years ago since I change helmets every 3 or 4 years. I daily drive so I wear my helmet every day rain or shine, they don't last long. I also hate throwing away helmets I paid $500-800 3 or 4 years later.

How about one of those shelf units used to store lever arch files? The shelf compartments are usually cube shaped, and pretty light... you could get and store one horizontally, so the helmets are side by side?

Something to keep in mind when you store helmets. Aside from the 'air it out' factor and the 'keep mice away' issues. A Helmet is only made to survive one impact, if you drop it from say the top of the fridge in the garage, you have no way of knowing what level of delamination of the inner shell or the foam may have occurred. So wherever/whatever you settle on for a storage solution, make sure its stable and secure.

Good point.
Maybe I should just store the yard cart type helmets there and be a little more careful with my Street helmet.....

Depends on your hobbies. I used to have a street helmet, a snowmobile helmet, a couple of dirt bike helmets, a BMX lid, and a mountain/road bike helmet.

For the full-face helmets I keep the box they came in and keep them on a shelf in the garage. Protected, stackable....

Froggert, just how often do you crash?:wtf:

I have two helmets, both street. My old helmet that I don't wear anymore is up in the spare bedroom closet, while my daily helmet is sitting on the shelf in the front coat closet. The shelf is wide enough for it to sit alongside gloves, buff, and ear plugs, while my riding suit, a jacket, and some pants hang below.

That is, when I get around to putting it away, frequently it just sits on the couch until the next morning, especially if it rained.

I do remember some people saying that you shouldn't store helmets in the garage, as many common vapors in garages can cause the interior of a helmet to decay pretty fast. Not sure if it is true, but it does make sense.

If I did have multiple helmets I wore on a regular basis, I'd probably put in a shelf in my living room up highish that had a small lip to reduce the possibility of helmets sliding off and crashing to the floor. If I had more riding gear, I'd go for something I saw in a picture, it was metal, had pull-out wire baskets along one side (vertically), rod for hangers, some shallow baskets above that, and a good shelf for helmets above that. I'd put that in the kitchen by the back door and consider myself well equipped.

I have been watching this very close .... lol
I think im gonna try some of the ideas, im afraid to count how many helmets I have (afraid they will bring that Hoarders show in on me!).
I have never thrown away a helmet, I have my very first one.
I roadraced motorcycles for years and bought and sold bikes to support that habit.
Like some have said, had to have new helmets every so often to race, then would retire them......... ahhhhhhh the memories lol (and pain!)
I have been using a 57 Chevy to store mine on for quite some time :)

Keep the ideas coming guys!

Ha! I betcha one day my car will end up being used as storage long term, except with everything piled inside so I can keep the car outside. (Don't wanna waste valuable garage space on a cage, 'ya know!) Heck, when I clean the garage, some stuff gets stored in my car, some in the living room!

When I take the car somewhere I usually have to clean it out first, like the last time I took it to work I had to remove everything from spare heads, a gas tank, and other stuff.:)

I like the concept. Will the pvc cut on an angle rip the colth inside the helmet? I would cut them Square and put a rounded cap over it.
Just a thought.

If you are worried about damaging the inside of the helmet, what about squashing something like a tennis ball, or something padded on the end of the pvc pipe (still cut at an angle like originally)?

PVC caps, with the pvc cut at 90* would still present a somewhat sharp angle from the side of the cap.

I have also been thinking the helmet hanging idea.
I googled and found a cowboy hat hanger that mounted on the wall such as one you would see in a store displaying them for sale. I may go that route

I just finished my motorcycle gear cabinet. We used to walk into the house and start taking off gear and leaving it wherever, and it never got put away, so this way it all stays out in the garage with the bikes. Helmets, boots, gloves, jackets, bags - now I know where everything is! Now I just have to come up with something for the trailer.

Sorry I did not explain to well. Cut the Pipe Square. Buy square I mean so that the ends look like they did when you dought the pipe, then put a cap on that. Then there will be no sharp edges

What are the dimensions of your cabinet? That is exactly what I have been thinking about putting in my garage.

Nicely done!

Formek, I guess I'm just overly cautious with my lid, I know what you were talking about, however if you have a vertical section, with different "branches" heading out at an angle, the top of the cap will be pointing up at an angle (say 45*), so the edge of the cap (between the top and side) will be what the helmet is resting on.

Like I said, I'm overly paranoid of my lid though, as I use it daily.

@Northern Ninja, what wood did you use for the cabinet? Looks like something I could use in my kitchen/dining area for my gear. Sure would be nice to have a dedicated area. How did you secure the shelves, screw the in place, or use an adjustable system?
