It's just so easy to drive the rods providing the ground isn't like concrete. I can't guess how much a 2'x2' copper plate would cost.

Am I mistaken or isn't there some sort of requirement to have a 30" clear zone around the panel?

Not sure, but if there is, how would the window and door affect that, especially if the panel was to be moved to be behind the door when it was opened?

Just wondering...

Behind a door is a great location, that way clear space is maintained, & the **** that can be piled up in other locations is avoided. When the door is closed the working space is maintained.

The panel needs to be in a 30" clear zone. Not have a 30" clear zone around it. Is that clear. Oh I made a funny.

Well its been over a year, but I figured I'd post a followup photo of what I actually did. Photo of old location and new location behind the door. Frees up space between door and window (bench will be below window) to hang a cabinet, tools, or place my 21" bench top toolbox with lid open.

Junctioned the #10-3 feed in a box which will be below the bench, ran new NM up and over. Re-routed all existing feeds. Still working, so the switches and openers are just in a temp location. I'm happy!

What no one mentioned was that 30 amps won't get you far. Pretty skimpy for power to a detached garage that might become a workshop also, but I realize the builder did that on their own, being cheap of course.

I think I'd recessed the panel into the wall but at least you can get full insulation in behind it when you do that.

You're right - we had the garage built by the home builder very quickly between purchasing our house and taking possession. That was over 2 years ago when I knew NOTHING about electrical or even home ownership. Unfortunately we built a deck off the back of the house, making it very difficult to dig up and change the feed which is direct buried.

Live and learn. This is our first home, so we won't be here forever.

Inspector said I couldn't recess the panel for whatever reason. Doesn't matter - I never planned to as we live in a cold climate and I want all the insulation I can get.
