Anyone have any experience with tinted glass garage doors? Would let in a lot of great natural light, but poorly insulated.6742940cc64fab62934419f34006d922.jpg

Guy that built the concrete underground up in Maine used these, was just talking about them the other day...LLWillisfan is the members name.
I think he said it was1/2” thick insulated.

Great looking build. Love the design. I used very similar overhead doors to the ones’s you posted. You give up some R value to be sure but my non scientific observation is that you get most if not all of it back in solar gain depending on the exposure of course. Most winter days my garage temp is well above the thermostat setting. The extra light is great plus the darn things just look awesome.

Good luck with the rest of your build. I'ii definitely be along for the ride.

Great looking place. I would agree that the light and solar gain that glass doors provide will out weigh the extra heat needed at night. I kind of wish I did that on my south facing doors.

Holy moly!!! Where does that guy find the time for such an incredible build thread? I don't even have time to read threads. He has an amazing build!

Yep, that totally qualifies as an update in my book. :D

Your build is looking good! In case I missed it earlier, how close are your nearest neighbors?
Here's a picture from the ridge. There are 40-50 miles of hiking, running, mountain biking trails within a mile or so.

Love this place!b1b2b42fb0bbe132012f65e1b5f7f3d8.jpgb60000a887b31720792cb7bfa7b3e37d.jpg

Wow, no kidding, that's a great spot! It's going to look amazing in the spring & summer when the whole area turns green. Thanks for sharing your photos, I'm just a teensy bit jealous! :D
I can't wait to see how it all turns out. :)

I'll have to make sure I'm there when it happens as it doesn't stay green long!

Now, we are the jealous ones. I love mountains!
I lived in Colorado for a few months in 1987. Only took me 30 yrs to finally move here. Jobs can be such a drag! I see you're from OH. We just moved here from Pittsburgh! Anything is possible.

We're on the western edge of Loveland right off 34. The road to Estes has been closed on and off for repair, but the proximity to RMNP is why we chose this place. I've always wanted to live on the doorstep of a National Park!

How long have you been in that area of Colorado, Slammer?

13 years ago we moved from Ohio to the front range plains just outside of Brighton Colorado. It was great.

For the next 10 years I drove from Brighton to Loveland (for work). The traffic during that time became truly oppressive. Too many people for the infrastructure.

We retired and spent the next year trying to drive to Estes and RMNP for hiking.. it was so frustrating we pulled up stakes and moved to Central Colorado.

Just as pretty up here... but no "Barbarian Hoard" :spit: well, less "Barbarian Hoard" anyways.

We started looking at houses and land to build on about 2 yrs ago. We knew we'd be out here sooner or later. Looked as far south as Pueblo and as far north as Fort Collins. When we got to Loveland we knew that was it.

We just moved here 2 months ago. I work in Denver 15 days a month. My wife will hopefully will be doing the same soon. She's comutting to D.C. now. Our hours vary, but when it's the same as most others it can add 30-45 mins to the already 50 minute drive. You're right about the traffic. Lots of folks, such as us, are moving here. I would've 30 yrs ago, but the military kept me other places. Good to be done with that part of my life. I think I too would've loved to move a bit more off the beaten path, but I haven't fully retired yet. I know the drive up 34 to RMNP will also be crowded, but hopefully I'll be doing it midweek when others are at work. Our commute to Denver will either be before rush hour, after rush hour or on weekends, so we'll survive... hopefully.

what an amazing place. It looks like there is nothing around the house for miles, how much of that property do you own? Are there utilities to connect to? Or is it completely off the grid?

They've got a couple big machines there now. We're moving a lot of dirt around the next few days. Should look total different.

Roof is going on as well. Mechanicals are done, insulation is mostly done. I was told drywallers will be there for the next 3 weeks or so.

It's starting to take it's toll on us...

Your place is looking great! I see you decided to not go with big glass garage doors, I think the ones you chose look just as nice.

Hopefully soon, after the home & shop are finally finished & you're all through babysitting the contractors, you can sit back & say to yourself that it was all worth it. :D

The glass doors were for the shop, which (other than the foundation) hasn't been started yet.

Still throwing that idea around. The main reason is the bring in extra light, since the doors will be south facing. Was thinking of a dark tinted glass.

Well it’s been awhile since I posted here... amazing how life catches up with you!

Anyway, been in the house for almost a year, even got some landscaping done.

The shop however is another story. However, we’re moving forward with it as soon as we can nail down a contractor here in Northern Colorado! One that isn’t neck deep in other builds and one that is half reasonable priced.

It’s good to see the economy doing well, and to live in a prosperous place that is growing. However, finding builders can be quite challenging.

Anyway, here are a few pics of the finished house. Hopefully a few shop pictures will be following soon!
