Well looks like I’ve reached my picture upload cap for the month. I’ve got a few more of the outside that I’ll upload later.

Hope you enjoy the pics and that it gives you ideas and inspiration on your project.

Thank you

...but I've got a TON of questions in setting up my shop. I guess that's part of the reason for sharing. I, like most on GJ, just LOVE looking at others garages. I just want to give back a bit.

Great build! My dad used to live in Genessee, now lives down near UoD.

Would love to see more details on the rainwater catchment system!

Place looks great & definitely not a cookie cutter house! If you'd been there several years back, I darn near could have waved at you from the 'Backbone.

PA: wonderful home and thanks for sharing!!

Since I’ve helped hundreds of guys and gals set up their home gyms I did notice you’ve got maybe my favorite piece of gym equipment. How do you and your family like the versaclimber?

I climbed Denali in Alaska a few years back as well as Half Dome and El Cap in Yosemite. That one piece of equipment rocks!

Love it!

My wife wants to put a sauna in our gym. Can you share some details? What did you choose as the heat source, gas or electric? And what specific unit if you know and your review of it so far. Thanks.

It’s actually REALLY easy. This is our second one.

In our previous house I finished our basement mostly myself.

Once the room is framed out, take measurements and order a kit online. There are a ton of places. Research them all a bit, looking for reviews. Most of the kits are super basic and easy.

We went with electric as most do. We needed a 220 line in place where the heater goes, a 110 line on the back wall where the light/lights went and a light switch on the outside of the door.

Insulate the walls, then cover the inside in a silver heat reflective wrap that comes with the kit.

From there it’s just a matter of cutting in the cedar, putting in trim to hide corners, putting together the remade benches and wiring up the lights and heater.

It’s a long weekend project really.

Awesome thanks. What kit did you end up going with if you don't mind sharing? The future gym this goes in is a standalone new build on the property so at this point we have total freedom on size etc. Just trying to get an early head start on some of the details I am not familiar with.

I honestly can’t remember... Sauna warehouse maybe?

A caution on size though; our old house didn’t have ceilings as tall. We ended up keeping the ceiling height in this new sauna. Not really needed and it takes a little bit longer to heat up.

PA: I used to have a house full of gym stuff and close to 4000 pounds of weights and dumbbells, but these days using anything over 25 pounds is rare and i'm not it terrible shape for an old guy (64).

Yoga is something i need to do more of along with planks and several other exercises that don't need any weights.

if my ceiling height inside our home was 9 foot i'd still own a versaclimber, but sadly I don't have any extra space in our little 2 car garage so I sold mine a few years ago. I'm thinking of getting a new Concept 2 model E rower that i use at my daughter's gym that gives me a great cardio workout in 5 minutes or 30 minutes if I have the time.

your home looks amazing and i'm sure you'll fill up your garage with some cool stuff too. since you are in a fairly modern town and development do you have access to vintage cabinets and tools or do you have to go on Ebay or other auction sites to get them? not saying you can't use new, but personally i just think a lot of the old stuff was built better.

cheers!

Tools are something I’ve been kicking around lately. I think I might go new, one piece at a time. I’ll probably go with Dewalt from Lowes for a few years. If I find that I’m playing around more, I might splurge and go with Jet. But boy are they expensive!

As for cabinets, my plan is to build all my own!

I've got several Dewalt woodworking tools and a Jet Joiner and I like all of them equally as well. for the quick jobs i've gathered up a bunch of Ryobi 18v tools cause the old tools work great with the new batteries (the old orangish batteries were ****). the little impact and chainsaw are maybe my favorites. the skill saw is nice for light duty stuff, but my vintage circular saws cut much better. if you don't already own one a Fein multy tool is very handy for those cuts that would take a lot longer to make with other tools. talk about expensive have you looked at Festool?

i'm guessing you are going to use the garage more for woodworking and car type stuff?

here's a table i'd like to build something similar once I build my woodshop that might work in your garage too so i'm posting a picture as a reminder to both of us. one safety thing i'll add if the saws or tools don't already have one is the stop switch i can hit with my knee or hip.

did the snow show up or has it come and gone already?

I haven’t looked at Festool, other than seeing them in shop videos. YouTube can absolutely crush an otherwise productive day!

Probably more woodworking than anything. Motorcycle maintenance would rate a close second. Lastly will be some mediocre metalwork.

Snow is hanging on. Usually here on the Front Range we’ll get snow and it’ll melt within a few days. However, the cold weather is hanging in there.

But at least the roofers showed up!

Thanks for sharing. The house looks great and I know that area west of the Backbone is equally great. Congrats.

BTW there is a Woodcraft store near the intersection of 34 and the interstate.

Well, I'm not sure to Thank You or be mad at you...

You just cost me a LOT of money! :headscrat

Wow, am I gonna buy a lot there.

I tell you, the more I look at the JET equipment, the more I like them. I added up in my head what I'll need/want, and I'm in for $10,000. Yikes! One piece at a time I guess.

Sorry about that. The Jet stuff I have seen (building robots with kids in a wood shop) looks good, although when we bought for the robotics team we settled for Rikon.

FtC and LvLnd are one of my favorite areas. We lived there in the 70's and owned a hobby shop in FtC. Daughter and her fam lived in LnLnd for a while. She worked for Group publishing, just down the road from you, and I managed camps for Group.

Good detail to know, thanks. I will make a note to bump the ceilings down where it goes. Appreciate the tip!
