I've been slowly upgrading my 24x21 attached garage in suburban Minneapolis since last summer and have only recently discovered the Garage Journal, so you can imagine my excitement when I saw just how many others are doing the same thing I am. I love all the pics and seeing the transformations, so I'm happy to share my project with you all and hope to get lots of input, suggestions, ideas, etc. as my work progresses.

At any rate, lets get to it! As stated, I have a 24x21 unheated, attached garage, so pretty standard. The house was built in 1974. We bought the place in the fall of 2013. There was a ton of renovation to do inside of the house immediately, but that can be a discussion for later on I suppose.

My primary reasons for wanting to finish/upgrade my garage is so I can use it as a work space for random projects and to have a space to do some painting. I have a small side business painting goalie masks and trying to do that in the winter in Minnesota doesn't always work so well. So my ultimate goal is to have everything insulated, drywall on walls and ceiling, and a heat source. So far here is what I've done:

-Removed existing shelves and some built-in stuff the previous owner had
-Re-routed some wiring to make way for drywall when that goes in
-Insulated walls and covered in poly (got insulation for FREE in Craigslist. score)

After the drywall is up, the name of the game is ORGANIZATION. So in order to achieve that objective I've been constantly on the lookout for the right set of cabinets at the right price. After months of searching I finally found them a couple of weeks ago. I scored a full set of cabinets for $80. They could probably use a new coat of paint but they'll get the job done as is.

The other organizing tool I've long been on the lookout for was some slat walls. There is a store in downtown Minneapolis that sells them and all their accessories, but they're $50 each brand new and that can add up quickly, so if it came down to it that was going to be a last resort, but my vigilance and patience paid off big time the other day as I was able to get 9 full 4x8 panels for $50 total (thank you again, craigslist) The guy had about 1,000sf of the stuff that he only wanted $100 for it all, but what am I gonna do with much slat wall? So I just took what I needed and we called it good.

Ok, so on to the pictures. As I stated, organized chaos is what I have now as you can see. I soon hope to lose the chaos and just be organized

Here's the chaos. Lots of stuff, but thankfully I have an eventual place for everything

The bags drooping from the rafters are some of my attic insulation

My mega slatwall score

My eventual plans for the space

Sorry for being so long-winded, just trying to be thorough.

I have plans to hang drywall on the ceiling this weekend and possibly on the walls next week. I welcome your comments, suggestions, criticism, ideas, whatever as everything progresses. Thanks for looking!

You should consider some shelving where the ceiling meets the wall. I ran over 25' of shelving in an area that is otherwise unused.

What is the slat wall made of? I used to run the fiberboard pegboard, and after six or seven years, they started to deform and sag. I'm looking for a new solution for my walls right now.

I plan to add shelving on the slat wall. I'll be installing that floor-to-ceiling and was thinking of having shelving near the top like in your picture. I believe the slat wall panels are made of MDF. They've got some weight to them.

Looks like a great plan you have. I will be interested in seeing it come out as you want it.
You will enjoy having a nice workshop, and I think the slatwall is a great idea.

Keep us posted! This is the sort of work we enjoy seeing from start to finish!!

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

The fun part has begun...hanging drywall on the ceiling!

This is actually my first experience hanging drywall, so if you see that I've done anything wrong please feel free to let me know, I won't be offended...or will I? I only had enough time to get this much hung today, 2 kids under the age of six tend to demand a lot of my time. But Sunday is wide open and I hope to knock out the bulk of it.

Not quite sure how it's gonna go with going around the garage door opener, I might need to do some creative re-arranging of the supports. Tips/suggestions?

I managed to get about half the ceiling drywalled this weekend

I've learned that hanging it isn't so tough or time consuming, is the measuring, making cuts for outlets and lights and moving stuff out of the way on the floor that takes up most of the time. More reason to get rid more junk I guess

Uh oh. Well there is attic space up there and I was going to put in loose fill insulation. Should I put down poly between that and the ceiling?

The ceiling is finally done. Took 5 days of working here and there, just myself and a lift. Now it's on to laying poly in the attic space and then putting in the insulation. I figure that'll take me a while as well. I'll also be hanging drywall on the walls fairly soon, possibly this weekend.

Things are slowly starting to take shape as I got a couple slat walls up today

drywall on the walls will be going up starting tomorrow. I finished insulating the ceiling last weekend and I've noticed a difference in the temp in there. It's been pretty chilly here this week and I'm comfortable in there with a couple heaters going.

I started hanging sheet rock on the walls today. As you can see, I went with the 4x10 sheets and am hanging them vertically so I'll have fewer seams to tape and mud.

I bought the sheets this morning and of course it has to be the coldest day of the year (-4 air temp, windchill must have been in the negative teens). But my wife was gracious enough to help me load and unload.

Lately I've had just a few hours here and there to work on it each day (damn day jobs getting in the way). I should hopefully be finished with the drywall by friday, then it's on to hanging cabinets and the rest of the slat walls.

Today was a pretty Productive day as I got up a whole wall of Sheet rock. Just have the small sections on either side of the garage door, one piece on the back wall and that'll be it for drywall.

don't know how much work well get done this weekend with family coming to visit, but back at it next week

The bulk of the drywall is now up, all that remains is some small spaces above the garage door. But more importantly I got some cabinets hung. It's nice to finally see some of the finished product starting to take shape.

The main base cabinet/work bench used to be a kitchen island or peninsula (I'm guessing) since the cabinet itself is 2' deep while the counter top is 3', so I'm going to have to trim that down so the wall doesn't seem like it's a mile away when I'm sitting at the bench.

Of course I couldn't have been as productive without a fridge full of some of my favorite beverages

The fridge is what was in the kitchen when we moved in, but we bought all new appliances, so instead of getting rid of it I thought I could give it a good home in the garage.

There's a store/warehouse in downtown Minneapolis that sells all sorts of store fixtures such as slat walls, grid wall panels, mannequins, glass display counters, etc. Mostly used stuff, but some new. Their website is http://www.asfmn.com

This place is awesome. They have all sorts of stuff, I could easily spend an hour or two just wandering and looking at all the stuff.

I got the slat wall hooks for $0.35 each. The shelf brackets were $1.50 each
