My 30' x 40' from the start...

I just thought I'd use this to show the progression as it goes...The dirt work started today....

Here's what we hopefully end up with....

A 30' x 40' x 12' with a 15' x 40' covered patio...

I will update this as progress goes. As of now, they are supposed to pour the shop slab on Wednesday (3-26), and the patio and drive on Thursday (3-27).

It looks alot bigger in person than I thought it would. We were initially going to do a 40' x 60', but we dont plan on staying here for more than 7 - 10 years. So we decided we would wait, save some money, and go all out at the next house...



Moose-LandTran, you're right about the transmission and transfer case, but the motor is actually a crappy old 305 that I am going to make one of these out of for the shop or patio....

Looks like me and you are about at the same phase on our shop builds. Im having to wait on concrete because im pouring the house and shop at the same time and they started forming the house today. I have seen those engine tables for a while now and i would love to do one. are you going to paint the block on yours? The one in the pic looks like a alluminum block. Anyways good luck on the shop build and keep us updated!!

Well, our house is already finished, we've lived here for just a bit over a year now...The only thing left that I want to do to the house is finish out part of the attic and where a bonus room should have been...


I'm not sure what I am going to do to the block. I thought about taking it to be HPC coated, like a set of headers. Then I thought about just cleaning it up really good, painting it black, and sanding the gasket sufaces to make them bare steel again...

Regardless of what you do with that 305, it's gonna be a ***** to clean under LOL

Real nice plan on the building design. I did the 10x40 slab on the back side of mine for garden equip storage, softner salt, well, compresser, etc. I haven't covered it yet but that's the plan.

Alright, they're making progress. They got all the forms set yesterday and dug the footing. Also dug deeper pad areas for where the 2 post lift will sit...I sat roughed the plumbing in and stubbed it out the back wall for now...

If the weather holds out today, they are going to get the driveway and patio forms set, then come back tomorrow morning and pour those...It took 4 trucks to do that pad today, I am betting its will take about the same for tomorrow's pour..


All the framing materials are supposed to be delivered on Monday (3-31) and the framers are supposed to start either Tuesday or Wednesday....Once framed, I'll be adding air pipe inside the walls, and running speaker wire for flush mounted speakers inside, and some outside...

Nope, no steel in the slab, the only steel is in the 18" footing...the slab is poured with the fibermesh...

I also sank a 2" receiver tube in the corner of the driveway as an anchor point to lock things down, and to be able to use some 2" tubing for a universal mount for things outside...ie. vise, bench grinder, polisher, whatever...

Fiber mesh isnt a bad idea but I wouldnt solely trust it. I worked at a concrete plant for 5 yrs and we advertised this stuff as the latest and greatest but the contracters still would put steel in the crete. Hope it works out for ya though....

I live pretty close to a busy street, and it doesnt rest good with me when I have to leave a trailer or something out overnight, so I thought about just putting some U bolts in as anchors, then the receiver idea seemed like it could double as an anchor point, and as a mount for other tools and what not...

Well, the concrete guys said they have had good results with it (which I expect them to say that), but I also know a few people that have used it with no problems...

Yes, there will be a lift. I have already decided where to place it, and had the concrete guys dig 2 mount pads for it. The area where the lift will sit is probably a little over 6" deep...You can see where the lift will be in the sketch below, or at least the right column of it, just to the right of the Jeep..

I think I am going to also be purchasing a motorcycle lift, as I have a Harley and a few ATV's. I am also going to try to build some sort of rack to put one ATV on top of, and one underneath it. I need to start a separate thread about that though...

Here are a couple other pics of after the guys left...I probably wont have any more picture updates until the middle of next week or so. As the framers arent supposed to be here until at least Tuesday...

The electric company did come out today, and I am setting up seperate 200 amp service strictly for the shop. I have them set up to come out hopefully on the week on the 14th sometime, but we will see if that sticks. I was going to run 3 phase to the shop, but they were going to want too much to set it up. Dropping back to single phase also saved me $2000 on the electrical bid...

LoL...see above. They came out of a buggy I had. The motor is going to be a table, and the trans and transfer case I'm going to sale...But for now they make great road blocks to keep anyone from driving on the new drive...

i really like the receiver idea. I've seen in other posts where guys have used them on their benches, but burying one opens up all kinds of other ideas. Thanks for posting a picture too, helps to know how it would look.

Too bad on missing out on the painting of it, but should be too hard to mask it off later and paint it in place.

Put the engine on casters, drill and tap four of the bolt holes for the oil pan and use some threaded stem casters. I drilled and tapped the deck to mount the piston rod assys and used socket head cap screws. Once all the metalwork is done and you have bare stell where you want it, hit it with some rattle can clear or good quality clear. i expoxied a piece of qire along the bottom under the cylinders so the bottles can be set right done in there. I used an AMC 360 for my first one and have used a few BBC and SBC.

Don't waste a thing.

The grill even has a grate in the sump so the charcoal can get airflow and the top is hinged.

Drill a flexplate or better yet flywheel to the same bolt pattern as the bell housing and of course gut the case bolt it to the flywheel/flexplate as the base and utilize the holes for the extension housing to mount the glass top. Use tubing or gears from the transmission as spacers to get the top to the desired height. .

So here are some pics from today...

Its going up pretty damn fast...except we've run into a problem. When the custom trusses were ordered, they were ordered as 40' span, instead of the correct 30' span. And of course it takes 2 - 3 weeks to build the trusses. So we did some calling and complaining, and they are going to rush order them, and they are supposed to be delivered Friday (4-4), or Monday at the latest...So now we'll be about a week behind...The framer said they could have probably been completely done tomorrow had the trusses been correct...

They are working on the covered patio portion right now, and should have it finished today. Once thats all set, I'll take some more pictures. The roofer also stopped by today to get a look at what he is going to have to do...Finally, the cable company is supposed to be coming out to see about putting a few cable outlets throughout the shop...

Here's a better pic of the one I figured you were talking about. I am in the process of getting the new seats mounted...The TJ is bone stock, but has lots of parts laying around for it...LS1, 4L60E, D300, D60's etc....

Here are a couple pics of where they ended up Tuesday (4-1). We ended up getting rain yesterday, and some last night, so hopefully it will dry up so the trusses can be delivered. I am supposed to hear from the company today whether the trusses will be ready tomorrow, or Monday...From the looks of the ground around here, I bet I cant get them in here until Monday...

The porch/patio is going to be awesome. The end height is 10', and is facing south. There's alot of room to do a couple different things out there. I think I am going to get an outdoor pool table to stick on the far end...

It was something I thought about after we didnt get the front porch on the front of the house like we wanted, and rather than trying to extend the back patio roof, I figured this was a better idea. Plus it would serve as a great pool house/patio if we ever do a pool...



Here are a couple pics from today. Sure enough, the trusses did arrive, and they did manuever them into the back yard without tearing up any ground. The skylift on the other hand did make quite a bit of ruts...They actually got all the trusses put up today, and 95% of the decking on. They are coming back tomorrow to finish the decking, and install the siding. I'll be sure to snap some more pictures, and if they get the siding done, I can hopefully paint it Sunday or Monday before the roofers, and brick layers come...

They didnt get much done over the weekend...here's where it sits at as of noon today (4-7). I'm going to set the 2 entry doors this afternoon, and they are supposed to start siding it sometime. The guy claimed that they'll be completely done with the framing and siding tomorrow, but I'm not so sure...Then if the weather holds out and they get the siding done, I have to paint it all before the brick layers of roofers come..

Here's a couple more shots from the last 3 days of progress...We had a very large amount of rain that postponed any work for a day and a half. Its a good thing I installed a french drain last year, else nothing would be getting done...

Here's the siding about midway done...All the siding will be painted to match the house, and the area below it will be bricked to match the house. I actually was going to attempt to paint it today, but it was way too windy...

This is as far as the roofers got today (4-10). I'm not sure what the holdup was. There was 2 of them here, but they were gone around lunch for probably 3-4 hours...Who knows...Hopefully they willl finish the entire thing tomorrow.

As of Monday (4-14), we will have been in progress for 3 weeks. I think we're making pretty good time, especially for having to deal with some of the **** with the lumber company. The electrician is supposed to be here on Wednesday, and the brick layers are hopefully going to be here either Monday or Tuesday....

ok, so today was 3 weeks since the start. I'd say that we are making pretty good time. I painted the siding this weekend. I'd say its about 95% done on the exterior paint. You can see where I couldnt reach. I only had a 20' extension ladder, and obviously I need a 25' or better. I'll be looking to borrow one from someone in the coming days to finish the peaks. There are also a few spots that I need to touch up, but I will need my wife's eyes for that since she is better at spotting them...

The brick got dropped off this morning, and I thought the brick layer would be here today, but apparently he is stuck on another job still. As of now, the electrician is supposed to be here Wednesday. He should be done by the weekend I am thinking, then maybe we can get some drywall started sometime next week....

Anyway, here are the pics...

On another note, I met with a lift dealer this weekend, and he said I should be hearing something from the installer sometime this week. I am getting a 2 post 11,000 lb lift, and a 1000 lb motorcycle lift...
