My 30X44 Detached

I am pretty excited to finally get my garage up. We put the house up last year and opted for a detached rather than an attached.
Went 30x44 as that was the biggest our budget would allow.
10' walls, 9x18 garage door, 14x44 attic space.
A friend had a homemade boom for skidsteer forks that we used to set trusses and fly up OSB for the roof. It worked slick and quickly.

The pex was 12'' spaced and doubled up 6'' apart in the footings.

INSULATION question.
I don't plan to finish the attic anytime soon, it will only have the tongue and groove osb sheathing on the floor.
I am in Northern MN and plan to insulate the lower walls and ceiling in the shop with R-21 as that is the best that will fit the 2x6 walls and ceiling. I will be heating the slab with a boiler panel.
Down the road I will put in chutes in the attic and blow cellulose.
Anything wrong with this idea?

I would even suggest furring the bottom chord with 2x2 or 2x4 on-edge to get another 1-1/2" of insulation. 5-1/2" plus 1-1/2 = 7 and 5-1/2 plus 3-1/2 = 9" latter would be preferred as I think you can get into the R~30 zone.

My advice is to brace the trusses per the engineered drawing with 2x timbers and not go to the plywood until you can lay down the cellulose. It will be so much easier to do if you can avoid packing stuff into the attic.

If you acquire Roxul you can get R-23 in 2x6 walls. I also like it because very dense and cuts down air infiltration which robs R-value and also non flammable and won't harbor organic growth if it gets wet.

I'd put the chutes in while the ceiling is still open. That's how I did my last garage and it was fast and easy that way. Looks good though!!

Definitely worth doing while ceiling is open. I forgot on a previous shop and had to crawl to the location to put them in. This shop, I put them in right away, learned my lesson. Good luck with your build!

Thanks everyone, some great advice here.
The bottom chord is 2x8 so I can go a little heavier. Will look into my options, defiitnely want the best R-Value I can afford to get in there.

Put the insulation in the roof first. You will never regret it, and you will notice a difference from the first day.

Yeah, I am pretty excited. We just got the door up this past Saturday. It's 16f today. Way too cold for October, guess it is going to be a long winter.

Most people think it is wood or steel. For vinyl, it looks really nice.
It is slower to put on that horizontal because you have to go up the ladder and down the ladder on every piece, but it looks nicer IMHO as there are no seams.

Taking longer than expected, but I have the outlets wired, needs to get the lights wired, then I can get an inspection, insulate, sheet and get the boiler installed.

After talking with several companies and looking into putting a system together, I decided to get a Electro Industries EZB-Eco - 10 kW - 34.1K BTU system.

This is their latest offering and is built like a plug and play appliance. The staff at Electro were amazing to deal with too, which was a big factor in going with them and this new system.

Just need fill valves and manifolds and I'll be ready to go.

Passed my Electrical Rough in yesterday so now it's on to outlets, insulation, metal ceiling, OSB walls and hanging the lights and setting up the new EZB-ECO Boiler. I cannot wait to have heat rolling in the shop.

If you acquire enough you can receive a 20-30% discount depending on the R value type and application and overall amount you purchase. They will even delivery for around $120 and put it right in the garage on pallets for you. If you are 24" oc and have a 2x8 bottom cord I'd get the R30 version, its 24" wide and 7 1/2" thick, perfect for your application. It's friction fit, cuts easy with a bread knife and easy to manage at only 4 ft lengths. At the R30 version I describe you get 4 pieces (4 ft lengths) per bundle. At little more expensive than blown in or fiberglass but you cant beat the R value per inch, plus its has great sound reduction and fire resistance.

Thank you for all of that, I am installing R-19 for the walls, R-19 for the ceiling (under the attic flor) and R38 on the 8'x44' attic areas. That is where my budget is. (everything is purchased and currently being installed as I have time, no going back)


My attic floor is done and is LP tongue and groove 3/4''.

Walls will be covered in OSB and I bought dura panel for the ceiling. Attic area will be unfinished for years.

I wired it all up and passed inspection, I’m insulating now and then will put up the ceiling dura panel and OSB walls, get the in floor heat going with the new Electro Industries EZB-ECO-10 boiler system.
I will be butting the insulation up tight, on top just haven't done it yet.

Finally making some insulation progress over the past couple days.
It was -26f this morning. Have two propane torpedos running and it’s staying pretty decent in here.
Can’t wait to get the boiler up and running!
Moving all the **** around takes the most time.
